Locus minoris resistentiae: An old but still valid way of thinking in medicine.

Locus minoris resistentiae (lmr) refers to a body region more vulnerable than others. This ancient concept, which is also present in Achilles' and Siegfried's old epic myths, weaves through many fields of medicine. In any internal organ or external body region with a congenital or acquired altered defense capacity, a disease process may occur more easily than elsewhere. Illustrative instances are the appearance of hepatocarcinoma on a cirrhotic liver, the onset of lung carcinoma in a tuberculosis scar, cases of osteosarcoma arising in chronic osteomyelitis, and carcinoma complicating chronic c

[Difference between numerical and verbal evaluation in the reflection of the attributes].

When evaluating something, both numerical indices (numerical evaluation) and verbal impressions (verbal evaluation) can be used. Previous studies suggest that these evaluations differ in the reflection of typical attributes and atypical attributes of the object being evaluated. In this study, two experiments were performed to examine this suggestion. In both experiments, subjects were required to evaluate the effects of countermeasure programs to prevent plague. In the first experiment, the atypical attributes of the object were manipulated, and in the second experiment, the attributes that pa

Exaggerated arterial curves due to endovascular interventions: Novel concept that describes how curves in the arterial wall affect the formation of neointimal hyperplasia, and explains why the long-term results of endovascular interventions are inferior to the long-term results of open surgical procedures.

Despite the vast advancement made in endovascular practice, it is still lacking the long-term success of open surgery in treating critical limb ischemia. In Bypass surgery excess length of the graft is cut to straighten it between the arterial anastomoses to avoid any excess length, in order to make sure that there will be no curves, but in endovascular approach this option is not available. In endovascular procedures, there are factors affecting negatively the long-term results. These factors contribute to excess length of the arterial wall, which is exaggerated after balloon dilatation. With

Conceptualising and Reimagining Professionalism in Different Contexts: From Nurse to Nursing Lecturer.

This article aims to conceptualise and reimagine the notion of nursing professionalism in two different contexts. Utilising a critical reflexive approach whilst drawing on salient theories, concepts, and studies on professionalism, I will consider my professional journey from that of a mental health nurse within the NHS to that of a nursing lecturer within a research-intensive university. The paper highlights that, at its worst, the gendered lens of what I term, old professionalism, may alienate some professions, nursing in this case, over others. It may also create stigmatising attitudes towa

Conceptual issues in 'cognitive impairment'.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to set out the recent writings relevant to acquired cognitive impairment in an attempt to reveal some of the underlying conceptual issues. RECENT FINDINGS: The huge strides being taken to diagnose Alzheimer's and other dementias early, including pre-symptomatically, raise important ethical issues. But there are broader conceptual issues too, around the notion of normal ageing. New techniques, such as deep brain stimulation, raise further ethical concerns, but may be relevant to deeper philosophical issues. Meanwhile, capacity continues to be of interest to

Infants' use of category knowledge and object attributes when segregating objects at 8.5 months of age.

The current research investigates infants' perception of a novel object from a category that is familiar to young infants: key rings. We ask whether experiences obtained outside the lab would allow young infants to parse the visible portions of a partly occluded key ring display into one single unit, presumably as a result of having categorized it as a key ring. This categorization was marked by infants' perception of the keys and ring as a single unit that should move together, despite their attribute differences. We showed infants a novel key ring display in which the keys and ring moved tog

Color-concept associations reveal a new conceptual space.

People are capable of using simple perceptual features such as color to signify complex meanings (perceptual semantics), an important aspect of nonverbal communication. This paper considers the nature and structure of the mental representations that support these abilities, using color semantics as a key example. Prior work has shown that people can judge the strength of association between essentially any color and any concept. Across four experiments we show that such associations express a low-rank conceptual space, color semantic space, whose dimensions can be well-characterized using colo

Domain-general categorisation explains constrained cross-linguistic variation in noun classification.

Languages appear limited in the range of concepts that are grammatically encoded. For example, person, number, and animacy distinctions are regularly found in e.g., grammatical agreement systems. But, despite their visual salience, colour distinctions are completely absent from such systems. Some have taken this to indicate domain-specific constraints on what can and cannot be part of grammars. Here, we test an alternative possibility, that domain-general cognitive capacities can explain these regularities. Using animacy- and colour-based agreement as our test cases, we show that a bias for an

Superordinate Concepts - Semantic Sources, Cognitive Properties and Neural Representation.

Concepts are cognitive constructs that are fundamental to neuroscience. Superordinate concepts such as world, life, and person are widely used in common language but typically ill-defined. In an interdisciplinary approach we present superordinate concepts as three-part accounts that encompass the articulated concepts of objects, events, and narratives. Thereby, superordinate concepts integrate the physical, relational, and narrated nature of our environmental information into comprehensive verbal expressions. Owing to their distributed representations in large-scale neural networks that in add

Structural racism: A concept analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the broad agreement that structural racism is problematic, there remains significant confusion as to what structural racism means and how to research it. PURPOSE: Perform a comprehensive concept analysis of structural racism and propose an operational definition. METHODS: Walker and Avant's eight-step, iterative method was used for conducting the concept analysis. DISCUSSION: Structural racism has five defining attributes: oppressive racial ideologies, dynamic state, inverse-related influence, temporality, and a false sense of "racial equity." Structural racism has six a

A Concept Analysis of Change Fatigue Among Nurses Based on Walker and Avant's Method.

Background: Change is prevalent in nursing environments and often leads to change fatigue among nurses while aiming to improve service quality and efficiency. Change fatigue is a significant stressor affecting nurses' work and psychology, and it is a crucial factor influencing organizational change. However, the concept of change fatigue among nurses has not yet been clearly defined or analyzed. Aim: This analysis aims to differentiate, clarify, and clearly identify the specific concept of change fatigue among nurses, which will provide nursing administrators and researchers with a comprehensi

Intracranial Entrainment Reveals Statistical Learning across Levels of Abstraction.

We encounter the same people, places, and objects in predictable sequences and configurations. Humans efficiently learn these regularities via statistical learning. Importantly, statistical learning creates knowledge not only of specific regularities but also of regularities that apply more generally across related experiences (i.e., across members of a category). Prior evidence for different levels of learning comes from post-exposure behavioral tests, leaving open the question of whether more abstract regularities are detected online during initial exposure. We address this question by measu

Preclinical Disease or Risk Factor? Alzheimer's Disease as a Case Study of Changing Conceptualizations of Disease.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) provides an excellent case study to investigate emerging conceptions of health, disease, pre-disease, and risk. Two scientific working groups have recently reconceptualized AD and created a new category of asymptomatic biomarker positive persons, who are either said to have preclinical AD, or to be at risk for AD. This article examines how prominent theories of health and disease would classify this condition: healthy or diseased? Next, the notion of being "at risk"-a state somewhere in-between health and disease-is considered from various angles. It is concluded that

Conceptualisation of a region-based group of musculoskeletal pain conditions as 'tibial loading pain' and systematic review of effects of load-modifying interventions.

OBJECTIVES: Conceptualisation of a clinically-relevant group of conditions as a region-based, load-related musculoskeletal pain condition ('tibial loading pain') to enable identification of evidence of treatment effect from load-modifying interventions. DESIGN: Systematic review and evidence synthesis based on a developed and justified theoretical position. METHODS: Musculoskeletal pain localised to the tibial (shin) region and consistent with clinical presentations of an exercise/activity-related onset mechanism, was conceptualised as a group of conditions ('tibial loading pain') that could

[The effects of subliminal and supraliminal presentation of trait-related words on person perception].

The present experiment was conducted to investigate how prior information affects subsequent person perception and when perceivers can control such an effect. One of three types of trait related words (i.e., hostility-related, friendliness-related, and neutral words) was subliminally or supraliminally presented to subjects, and subsequently, subjects rated the impression of four targets: a hostile person, a friendly person, a neutral person and themselves. Although results did not show that supraliminally presented words affected targets' impressions, they showed that the impressions sometimes

A modified mark test for own-body recognition in pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina).

Classic mirror self-recognition mark tests involve familiarizing the subject with its mirror image, surreptitiously applying a mark on the subject's eyebrow, nose, or ear, and measuring self-directed behaviors toward the mark. For many non-human primate species, however, direct gaze at the face constitutes an aggressive and threatening signal. It is therefore possible that monkeys fail the mark test because they do not closely inspect their faces in a mirror and hence they have no expectations about their physical appearance. In the current study, we prevented two pig-tailed macaques (Macaca n

Refining the conceptualization and assessment of internalized weight stigma: A mixed methods approach.

Internalized weight stigma has gained increasing attention in empirical studies, though questions remain about the adequacy of existing measures. The current study utilized a mixed methods approach, including a novel semi-structured interview, to revisit the conceptualization of internalized weight stigma and explore in more depth the stereotypes and impacts of weight reported by individuals with high scores on the widely-used Weight Bias Internalization Scale. All participants were interviewed as part of the screening procedures for two clinical trials (Study 1 n = 84, mean age=47.8 years, 83

How to assess different types of abstract concepts in brain disorders: A systematic review.

The clinical evaluation of semantic knowledge has predominantly relied on tools targeting concrete concepts, whereas abstract knowledge has historically received limited attention despite its importance in everyday communication. Only a few instruments have explored the internal subdivision of abstract knowledge, likely due to the intrinsic difficulty of defining specific types of concepts or dimensions, resulting in a fragmented and heterogeneous neuropsychological assessment framework that limits our understanding of this domain. This systematic review examined the tools used to assess vario

Being alive: how biology, agency and naturalness predict English speakers' understanding of life.

Animacy is an essential construct in cognitive science, distinguishing animate entities like a gorilla from inanimate entities like a shovel. Animacy is often investigated by observing how people interpret the meaning of the word alive. While aliveness is conventionally understood to be a dichotomy-something is either alive or not-many English-speakers' judgments about alive conflict with this dichotomy. Specifically, animals are more often judged alive than plants and natural abiotic entities (e.g., ocean, geyser) more often judged alive than artifacts (e.g., airplane, towel). This study asks
