Relations Between Dual Filial Piety and Life Satisfaction: The Mediating Roles of Individuating Autonomy and Relating Autonomy.

Filial piety (FP) was formerly a Confucian concept that specifies how children should treat their elders. In recent years, some psychologists have postulated that there are considerable overlaps between Chinese FP and notions found in other cultures. They have redefined FP as a contextualized personality emphasizing the psychological schema of parent-child interaction so that it fits universal cultural contexts. Based on this theory construction, this study aimed to examine the effects of reciprocal FP and authoritarian FP on life satisfaction and the mediating roles of individuating autonomy

Personality as a Social Process: where Peter Giordano Meets Boris Parygin.

In this paper I comment on the "Individual personality is best understood as process, not structure: A Confucian-inspired perspective" article by Peter Giordano (Culture & Psychology, 23(4), 502-518 (2017)), which addresses the question of how to comprehend a personality which is continuously changing and varying with changes in social contexts and situations. The issue which Giordano turns up I believe to be of great importance and topicality in the quickly changing globalizing contemporary world. Giordano's paper highlights an important problem in the development of contemporary personality

[Birth and succession of a current of learning in Korean medicine: the supporting yang current of learning].

In this study, I aim to reveal how Lee Gyoojoons medicine has given birth to a current of learning, the supporting yang current of learning, and describe its historical significance. Before anything, I'd like to throw the question of whether if there were any currents within the traditional Korean medicine. There are no records of medical currents being widely discussed until now in medical history of Korea; however, the current of Lee Jema's sasang medicine is the most noticeable one. Among the contemporaries of Lee Jema, during the late Chosun, there was also another famed medical practition

Recovery from Anorexia Nervosa in contemporary Taiwan: A multiple-case qualitative investigation from a cultural-contextual perspective.

Grounded in a cultural and contextual perspective, the current study examined the lived experiences and the recovery pathways of three Taiwanese women diagnosed with various subtypes of anorexia nervosa, at varying stages of their recovery. Specifically, using a multiple-case qualitative method, this study explored the complex, dynamic interactions of sociocultural factors and forces (i.e., cultural, familial, and societal influences) that impinge upon the three Taiwanese female participants in relation to living with anorexia nervosa in contemporary Taiwan. Data were collected based on in-dep

Supernatural explanatory models of health and illness and healthcare use in China among men who have sex with men.

People's beliefs in supernatural explanatory models of health and illness - beliefs in divine and/or supernatural forces to inform how they perceive, interpret, and respond to health and illness - may have important implications for their use of healthcare services, especially among individuals with lower socioeconomic status (SES). However, the relevance of such research for contexts with strong Confucian and Buddhist traditions and sexual minority subpopulations remains unclear. We conducted a nation-wide survey in China of 503 men who have sex with men (MSM) to test hypotheses examining how

Examining the Links Between Beauty Ideals Internalization, the Objectification of Women, and Ambivalent Sexism Among Chinese Women: The Effects of Sexual Orientation.

The widespread propagation of beauty ideals has made their influence inescapable for women worldwide. Numerous studies have suggested the negative consequences of the internalization of beauty ideals. However, researchers have mostly focused on Western cultures, with only a few studies addressing China. Given that Chinese traditional Confucian values emphasize more reproduction and family duties of women, women suffer more pressures in China. However, not all women experience and respond to cultural practices in the same way. The present study aimed to examine the mechanism underlying the link

The Emergence of an Elder-Blaming Discourse in Twenty-First Century China.

To people familiar with Confucian teachings about revering elders, it may be surprising that, over the last decade and a half, a discourse has emerged and spread widely in China in which elders are denigrated as out-of-date and corrupt. Using newspaper articles, commentaries and videos, this paper first traces the emergence of intergenerational conflicts over bus seats, along with related phenomena that have become flashpoints in the new elder-blaming discourse. Second, this paper delineates and challenges popular and academic notions that intergenerational differences in values and dispositio

[Study on the author and its edition circulation of Ao shi shang han jin jing lu (Ao's Records of Golden Mirror on Cold Pathogenic Diseases)].

Based on Ao's original work, Du Qingbi compiled Ao shi shang han jin jing lu (Ao's Records of Golden Mirror on Cold Pathogenic Diseases) . Though someone claimed that Ao shi shang han jin jing lu was an expert of Confucian classics, Ao Jiweng in the Yuan dynasty, unfortunately, no records reveal that he had been related to medicine, and it needs further investigation. It was seldom known since the completion of Ao shi shang han jin jing lu. Thanks to Xue Ji' of the Ming Dynasty who blockprinted this work twice and then it began to circulate. In addition to its circulation as a monograph, it wa

[Exploration of life experiences of an aged woman in a military housing community through reminiscing on photos].

Reminiscence therapy helps elders recall memories of old times through activities designed to achieve self-healing. The qualitative case in this research was a 70 year-old woman who had lived in a military village for 40 years. Semi-structured questionnaires were used for the interview and data was recorded and transcribed word for word. Analytical methods used the three major patterns of reminiscing over objects, vertical and horizontal life. In reminiscing over objects, the author performed interconnected analysis using selected objects that were beloved and/or had special meaning to the sub

State, food, and me: an autoethnographic reflection on the sociocultural dimensions of Chinese women's eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders among Chinese women have been growing in recent years, yet, little research has explored these experiences in non-Western contexts. This study aimed to challenge the dominant Western-centric models, which often universalise psychiatric frameworks and overlook culturally embedded aspects of distress. It critically examines how sociocultural forces in contemporary China shape the development and recovery of eating disorders among Chinese women. METHOD: This paper adopted a critical autoethnographic approach, grounded in the author's decade-long lived experience as a

Situating Chinese American husbands' traditional gender beliefs within acculturative and marital processes.

OBJECTIVE: Confucian beliefs emphasize the role of husbands as financial providers and authority figures, whereas wives are tasked with managing household matters. Such beliefs in men may have negative effects on their partners within heterosexual couples. However, these concepts have rarely been examined with Chinese American families. The present study situated Chinese American husbands' traditional gender beliefs within paths from their cultural orientations to their wives' outcomes. METHOD: Among 416 Chinese American married couples and across three waves of data, path analyses examined i

Meaning-centered psychotherapy for Chinese caregivers of patients with advanced cancer: Cultural and linguistic adaptation.

PURPOSE: Cancer incidence is rising in Hong Kong, with over half of common cancers diagnosed at advanced stages, placing substantial demands on families and driving high caregiver distress. Meaning-centered psychotherapy for cancer caregivers (MCP-C) shows promise in Western settings but requires cultural tailoring for Chinese caregivers whose values are shaped by Confucian ethics. This study aimed to culturally and linguistically adapt MCP-C for Chinese caregivers of patients with advanced cancer in Hong Kong to enhance acceptability, relevance and conceptual equivalence. METHODS: Guided by

Longitudinal associations between relationship quality and prosocial behavior in Chinese adolescents: the mediating role of meaning in life.

OBJECTIVE: Positive youth development (PYD) can be enhanced through dynamic interactions between individuals and their environments. While previous research has primarily focused on its social-emotional learning mechanisms, the cognitive and motivational pathways of PYD were seldom explored. To address this gap, this study investigated the associations of parent -child relationships, teacher-student relationships, and friendships with adolescents' prosocial behavior, with a focus on the mediating role of meaning in life. METHODS: A three-wave temporally ordered mediation analysis was conducte

AI-mediated cross-cultural translation of Chinese brush-and-ink psychology for aesthetic empathy.

The brush-and-ink system of Chinese painting is a systematic psychological symbol system deeply rooted in Confucian, Dao, and Chan, where lines, ink tones, and composition, respectively, embody painters' personality traits, emotional states, and mental patterns. In the context of global digital communication, it faces the dilemma of "visual accessibility but psychological inaccessibility," mainly due to the obvious East-West cultural-psychological aesthetic gap that seriously hinders Western audiences' ability to empathize with its implicit psychological connotations. Existing relevant studies

Characteristics of young rural Chinese suicides: a psychological autopsy study.

BACKGROUND: Patterns of suicide rates in China differ in many ways from those in the West. This study aimed to identify the risk factors characteristic for young rural Chinese suicides. METHOD: This was a case-control psychological autopsy (PA) study. The samples were suicides and living controls (both aged 15-34 years) from 16 rural counties of China. We interviewed two informants for each suicide and each control with pretested and validated instruments to estimate psychosocial, psychiatric and other risk factors for suicides. RESULTS: The prevalence of mental disorders was higher among th

Health-Related Quality of Life in The Chinese Cultural Context: A Scoping Review Protocol.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: While numerous measures of health-related quality of life have been developed, most are grounded in Western perspectives and may not fully capture culturally specific values and beliefs. In Chinese culture, Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism shape people's perceptions of well-being, health, and quality of life. These perceptions include some unique dimensions such as emotion control, weather adaptation, social adaptation, spirit, and complexion. Understanding these culturally embedded perspectives is essential for developing valid HRQoL measures, guiding patient-centred ca
