[Isotretinoin embryopathy with microtia-anotia and congenital heart disease: case report].

Isotretinoin is a retinoid that derivates from vitamin A. It is indicated for recalcitrant nodular acne treatment, but it has been classified as teratogenic. A wide spectrum of birth defects including craniofacial, heart and nervous system malformations have been described associated to prenatal exposure to this drug. We report the case of a newborn with a history of prenatal exposure to isotretinoin with craniofacial defects, including facial paralysis, right anotia, left microtia and complex heart disease. Key words: isotretinoin, congenital abnormalities, teratology.

Surgical techniques for a deep concha, a pseudomeatus, and high projection in congenital microtia.

Some modified surgical techniques are described for constructing a deep conchal cavity and pseudomeatus and obtaining high auricular projection in congenital microtia. At the primary operation, a rather small portion of the microtic vestige is utilized for the lobule by switching, sparing the skin for the concha, with no free skin graft used. For higher projection of the auricle, three-dimensional transposition of a retroinfraauricular flap together with cartilage pieces underneath is applied to the cephaloauricular sulcus. A deep conchal cavity is constructed by further removal of the soft ti

Reconstructive Techniques in Pediatric Congenital Microtia: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Autografts and allografts are commonly used in microtia reconstruction. We aimed to systematically review and compare these reconstructive materials in pediatric congenital microtia reconstruction. A systematic review of the literature was performed. MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and CINAHL databases were searched for original studies on congenital microtia reconstruction in pediatric patients since database inception to 2021. Microtia grade was stratified as high or low. Meta-analysis of pooled proportions and continuous variables was performed using inverse variance weighting with

Rare Combination of Congenital Microtia and Limb Malformations: Analysis of Etiology and Treatment.

ABSTRACT: Congenital microtia is the second most common congenital craniofacial deformity, and limb malformation is the most common birth defect. The combination of the 2 deformities is rare. In this study, the authors present 3 cases with a rare combination of congenital microtia and limb malformations and analyze the etiology and treatment of the malformations. There may be genetic homology between these two malformations, and they can be associated with abnormal ectodermal migration. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV-case study.

Preliminary Analysis on Characteristics of Rib Cartilage Calcification in Patients With Congenital Microtia.

Autogenous rib cartilage graft procedure for microtia reconstruction has been adopted as the most standardized current method. But calcification would make it difficult for cartilage harvesting and ear framework sculpting. The objective of this study was to explore the rate, degree, and pattern of rib cartilage calcification in microtia and to guide rib cartilage harvesting and the optimal timing of auricular reconstruction. A retrospective study was performed with the imaging data from 320 consecutive patients who received a preoperative 3-dimensional chest computed tomography (CT). Overall,

The anatomy and application of the postauricular fascia flap in auricular reconstruction for congenital microtia.

BACKGROUND: The various layers of the scalp are widely used in reconstructive procedures. The technique used for soft tissue coverage seems to influence the framework extrusion rate in auricular reconstruction. We have investigated the role of the postauricular fascial flap in providing ample, thin neurovascular cover to facilitate ear reconstruction in congenital microtia. METHODS: Following postauricular cutaneous tissue expansion, the postauricular neurovascular fascia flap was raised to partially cover the projected three-dimensional autogenous cartilage framework. A suction drain was pla
