Congo red modulates ACh-induced Ca(2+) oscillations in single pancreatic acinar cells of mice.

AIM: Congo red, a secondary diazo dye, is usually used as an indicator for the presence of amyloid fibrils. Recent studies show that congo red exerts neuroprotective effects in a variety of models of neurodegenerative diseases. However, its pharmacological profile remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of congo red on ACh-induced Ca(2+) oscillations in mouse pancreatic acinar cells in vitro. METHODS: Acutely dissociated pancreatic acinar cells of mice were prepared. A U-tube drug application system was used to deliver drugs into the bath. Intracellular Ca(2+) oscillations

High-frequency RecA-dependent and -independent mechanisms of Congo red binding mutations in Yersinia pestis.

Yersinia pestis, which causes bubonic and pneumonic plague, forms pigmented red colonies on Congo red (CR) dye agar. The hmsHFRS genes required for CR binding (Crb(+)) are genetically linked to virulence-associated genes encoding a siderophore uptake system. These genes are contained in a 102-kb chromosomal pgm locus that is lost in a high-frequency deletion event, resulting in loss of the Crb(+) phenotype. We constructed a recA mutant strain of Y. pestis KIM10+ (YPRA) to test whether the high frequency Crb mutants result from a RecA-mediated deletion of the IS100-flanked pgm locus. Two Pgm-as

Recoverable Fe3O4@SiO2@TMC magnetic sorbent for efficient Congo red removal: performance and adsorption mechanism.

The increasing discharge of dye-laden wastewater necessitates the development of efficient and easily recoverable adsorbents. In this study, a trimesoyl chloride (TMC) functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic sorbent was synthesized via a sol-gel route for the removal of Congo red (CR) from aqueous media. Dynamic light scattering indicated a uniform particle size distribution (∼130-140 nm). FT-IR analysis confirmed the presence of -COOH, -OH, and aromatic moieties, enabling multi-modal interactions including hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, π-π stacking, and coordination with CR molecules

S-scheme polyphenylguanidine / 2D-Bi2WO6 heterojunction photocatalytic composite membrane: H2 production and Congo red degradation.

Photocatalysis is widely applied in fields such as pollutant degradation and clean energy production. However, single photocatalysts have limited light absorption ranges and high carrier recombination rates. Constructing heterojunctions can address these issues. But, existing heterojunctions often suffer from drawbacks such as high fabrication costs, poor synergistic functionality, and susceptibility to catalyst detachment. Therefore, a novel S-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic tri-layer composite membranes (TLCM2) were fabricated, with a polyethersulfone (PES) membrane as the substrate, a

Calcium alginate aerogels doped with polypyrrole/titanium dioxide nanoparticles for photodegradation of congo red dye.

Generally, semiconductor photocatalyst can only absorbed ultraviolet light and easily reunited in the using process, which affected their catalytic efficiency. In this work, the calcium alginate/polypyrrole/titanium dioxide (CA/PPy/TiO2) aerogel was prepared to photodegrade Congo red (CR) dye. The sensitization of TiO2 with PPy enabled energy absorption in visible light. The X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) result confirmed hydrogen bonds between PPy and TiO2 proving tight combination between them. Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectrum verified optical band gap narrowing of PPy/Ti

Electroplating sludge derived CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 metal oxide composites for highly efficient removal of Congo red.

The utilization of electroplating sludge (ES) to derive metal oxide functional materials is a key strategy, as it enables the recycling of valuable elements, mitigates environmental risks, and aligns with green, low-carbon development strategies. Nevertheless, the development of metal oxide composite functional materials with distinctive structures and properties derived from ES continues to present several challenges. Herein, we synthesized CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 metal oxide composites from ES by one-step hydrothermal method. As-obtained CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 metal oxide composites (MMOs) have a unique la

Amyloid myopathy mimicked with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy diagnosed using Congo red staining: a case report.

Amyloid myopathy often occurs in the context of systemic amyloidosis, as a rare manifestation of "light chain" (AL) amyloidosis, accounting for 1% of its incidence. A 58-year-old man with two years history of weakness and edema of lower extremity, elevated creatine kinase (CK), and inflammatory lesions from muscle biopsy which was misdiagnosed as inflammatory myopathy. After immunotherapy, the original symptoms worsened. We later confirmed the disease through MRI, Congo red staining and bone marrow puncture results. Our purpose is that to increase awareness of amyloid myopathy to minimize the

Photocatalytic degradation of Congo Red by zinc sulfide quantum dots produced by anaerobic granular sludge.

ABSTRACTSulfate reducing bacteria present in anaerobic granular sludge mediate the metabolic conversion of sulfate to sulfide. In the presence of heavy metals, sulfides precipitate as metal sulfides. In this study, dissimilatory sulfate reduction was coupled to the precipitation of zinc as ZnS quantum dots (QDs) at ambient conditions. The biogenic ZnS QDs had average sizes of 5-7 nm and were formed within 2-4 days of incubation. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the biosynthesised ZnS QDs possessed a crystalline cubic lattice structure. The organics present during ZnS biosynthesis were

Congo red-positive cardiac kappa-AL amyloidosis in plasmacytoma -- case report and review of the literature.

We report on a 51-year-old female patient who was diagnosed in 2001 as suffering from plasmacytoma. The patient had had complaints of bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome in 1999, treated by a simple dissection without performing histological examination. Congestive heart failure had gradually developed since that time. In 2001 echocardiography revealed a pronounced thickening of the left ventricular wall with systolic and diastolic dysfunction. A kappa-light chain M component and kappa-light chain-restricted bone marrow plasmacytosis were detected. Amyloid deposits staining positive in the kappa-

MnO2/g-C3N4/PPy Ternary Composite for Congo Red Adsorption from Water: Preparation and Comparative Performance.

The presence of synthetic dyes in wastewater continues to create problems for water treatment and increases the need for adsorbent materials that can provide effective dye removal. MnO2, g-C3N4, and PPy have been widely studied for pollutant removal, but direct comparisons of their individual, binary, and ternary systems under common adsorption conditions remain limited. In this study, six adsorbents were prepared and compared for Congo Red (CR) removal in the dark. The adsorption experiments were conducted using approximately 40.0 mg of adsorbent in 40 mL of a 200 mg/L CR solution at ambient

Amyloid detecting dye "Congo Red" induces amorphous aggregates in hen egg white lysozyme at physiological pH.

Congo Red (CR) is an azo dye commonly used for amyloid detection and histological staining. However, its potential influence on protein aggregation remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of CR on the aggregation of Hen Egg White Lysozyme (HEWL) under physiological and variable environmental conditions. At pH 7.4, HEWL remained soluble in the absence of CR; however, the addition of CR at concentrations ≥0.05 mM induced rapid and visible aggregation without a detectable lag phase, suggesting a non-nucleated aggregation mechanism. SDS-PAGE confirmed a marked reduction in solub

Trichrome, Congo red, and thioflavin S stains are comparable for the diagnosis of amyloid deposits in endomyocardial biopsies.

INTRODUCTION: Despite imaging advancements, proper management for cardiac amyloidosis hinges on accurate diagnosis and subtyping of amyloid in endomyocardial biopsies (EMBx). Nonetheless, the approach toward identifying amyloid in EMBx varies among pathologists. Various staining techniques can be used, each with its own advantages and limitations. There is a lack of evidence-based data to compare different methodologies to detect amyloid in EMBx. In this study, we compared the efficacy of H&E stains only, Congo red (bright field, polarized, and fluorescence), trichrome, and Thioflavin S for th

Dual Studies of Photo Degradation and Adsorptions of Congo Red in Wastewater on Graphene-Copper Oxide Heterostructures.

This work comprehensively studies both the photocatalytic degradation and the adsorption process of Congo red dye on the surface of a mixed-phase copper oxide-graphene heterostructure nanocomposite. Laser-induced pristine graphene and graphene doped with different CuO concentrations were used to study these effects. Raman spectra showed a shift in the D and G bands of the graphene due to incorporating copper phases into the laser-induced graphene. The XRD confirmed that the laser beam was able to reduce the CuO phase to Cu2O and Cu phases, which were embedded into the graphene. The results elu

Systematic review of accuracy of reporting of Congo red-stained amyloid in 2010-2020 compared with earlier.

BACKGROUND: Almost always, Congo red-stained amyloid between polariser and analyser is said to show "green birefringence" or "apple-green birefringence". In 2010, we found that not all published images showed green, and not all that did showed only green. This systematic review of more recent papers was to find if there had been any improvement in the accuracy of reporting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE was searched on 15 March 2021 for papers published between 2010 and 2020 inclusive mentioning amyloid and Congo red. These were examined for descriptions of colours, which were compared with

Systemic administration of Congo red does not improve motor or cognitive function in R6/2 mice.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder for which there is no treatment. Prior to the onset of symptoms, abnormal protein aggregates (inclusions) are found in neurons in humans and R6/2 mice. It has been suggested that the progression of HD can be slowed or prevented by disruption of the aggregation process. In agreement with this, it has been reported that systemic treatment of R6/2 mice with Congo red caused a reduction in numbers of striatal inclusions and an improvement in motor symptoms and survival [Sanchez, I., Mahlke, C., Yuan, J., 2003. Pivotal role of ol

Prion urine comprises a glycosaminoglycan-light chain IgG complex that can be stained by Congo red.

Light chain IgG, a known amyloidotic protein, is present in the urine of prion disease affected individuals in a protease resistant form. In addition, it was shown recently that prion urine samples comprise a significant excess of glycosaminoglycans. Since amyloidotic proteins and glycosaminoglycans are the major components of amyloid aggregates, a Congo red dot blot assay was developed for detection of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) in urine. This assay was also positive for about 10% of patients suffering from diseases such as Alzheimer disease, cerebrovascular attacks and multiple sclerosi

Computational supported experimental insights in adsorption of Congo Red using ZnO/doped ZnO in aqueous solution.

The rapid growth of industrialisation has led to the discharge of harmful effluents into water bodies, severely disrupting the balance of ecosystems. The detection and removal of dyes from wastewater remains a significant challenge. In this study, we report the synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) and its doped derivatives through a facile chemical method, followed by comprehensive characterisation and analysis to assess their potential in various applications. The structural properties of the synthesised materials were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), which verified their crystalline nature and

Adsorptive removal of Congo red from aqueous solutions using crosslinked chitosan and crosslinked chitosan immobilized bentonite.

Batch experiments were executed to investigate the removal of Congo red (CR) from aqueous solutions using the crosslinked chitosan (CCS) and crosslinked chitosan immobilized bentonite (CCS/BT composite). The CCS and CCS/BT composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The removal of CR was examined as a function of pH value of CR solution, contact time, and inorganic sodium salt and ionic strength. The equilibrium data of CCS and CCS/BT composite agreed well with the Langmuir model. The adsorption capacities of CCS and CC
