BACKGROUND: Conidiobolus spp. (mainly C. coronatus) are the causal agents of rhino-facial conidiobolomycosis, a limited soft tissue infection, which is essentially observed in immunocompetent individuals from tropical areas. Rare cases of invasive conidiobolomycosis due to C. coronatus or other species (C.incongruus, C.lamprauges) have been reported in immunocompromised patients. We report here the first case of invasive pulmonary fungal infection due to Conidiobolus pachyzygosporus in a Swiss patient with onco-haematologic malignancy.

BACKGROUND: In response to the replace mammal research models with insects in preliminary immunological studies, interest has grown in invertebrate defense systems. The immunological response is regulated by cytokines; however, while their role in mammals is well understood, little is known of their function in insects. A suitable target for studies into insect immunology is Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera), the wax moth: a common host for human fungal and bacterial pathogens. G. mellonella is also a perfect subject for studies into the presence of cytokine-like proteins.

One group of promising pest control agents are the entomopathogenic fungi; one such example is Conidiobolus coronatus, which produces a range of metabolites. Our present findings reveal for the first time that C. coronatus also produces dodecanol, a compound widely used to make surfactants and pharmaceuticals, and enhance flavors in food. The main aim of the study was to determine the influence of dodecanol on insect defense systems, i.e. cuticular lipid composition and the condition of insect immunocompetent cells; hence, its effect was examined in detail on two species differing in susceptib

Invertebrates are becoming more popular models for research on the immune system. The innate immunity possessed by insects shows both structural and functional similarity to the resistance displayed by mammals, and many processes occurring in insect hemocytes are similar to those that occur in mammals. The humoral immune response in insects acts by melanization, clotting and the production of reactive oxygen species and antimicrobial peptides, while the cellular immunity system is based on nodulation, encapsulation and phagocytosis. An increasingly popular insect model in biological research i

Zygomycosis is an important granulomatous disease that affects humans and animals, particularly sheep in tropical regions. Rhinofacial and nasopharyngeal zygomycosis were described in sheep in association with Conidiobolus spp. The present study characterized 5 samples of Conidiobolus isolated from 3 herds with clinical disease in Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The clinical and pathological findings were similar to nasopharyngeal zygomycosis. Based on morphological features, isolates were classified as Conidiobolus spp., and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on 18S ribosomal DNA grouped all is

Invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised children suffering from hematological malignancies have been a major cause of morbidity and mortality. In recent years fungi other than aspergillus and candida are gaining importance. These emerging fungal infections have distinct epidemiological features and management issues especially in immunocompromised patients. Here we report the isolation of Conidiobolus coronatus, a rarely reported zygomycetes infection in a patient suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Conidiobolus generally causes indolent infection in the sino-respiratory tract

We review herein infections by Conidiobolus spp., Cryptococcus spp., and Aspergillus spp. in sheep and goats. Conidiobolus spp. are common causes of rhinitis in sheep and are less frequent in goats, in which Conidiobolus spp. also cause skin lesions. Cryptococcus spp. cause rhinitis, meningitis, encephalitis, and pneumonia in goats, and are rarely observed in sheep. Aspergillus spp. may cause rhinitis in goats, and pneumonia and mastitis in sheep and goats. Gross and microscopic lesions caused by these 3 fungal infections may be similar to each other. The diagnosis of these diseases must be ba

Rhinoentomophthoromycosis caused by Conidiobolus sp commonly presents as a chronic granulomatous lesion that affects the rhinofacial subcutaneous tissue. We present an 18-year-old girl who presented with progressive bilateral proptosis and loss of vision since 2 weeks. Biopsy and fungal cultures confirmed diagnosis of Conidiobolus sp infection of the paranasal sinuses bilaterally with orbital extension and blindness. The clinical picture was complicated by the presence of sputum-positive cavitatory pulmonary tuberculosis, which was diagnosed at the same time. To our knowledge, this is the firs

Conidiobolus infection is difficult to diagnose and treat. We report successful treatment of invasive conidiobolomycosis, only one third such report is in the literature, and the first case reported was on a burn survivor. Our patient is also the first case reported on an adult surviving conidiobolomycosis. This case illustrates that serum β-D-glucan (BDG) may be useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of invasive Conidiobolus infection, contrary to the misconception that Zygomycetes do not release detectable levels of BDG. Aggressive, surgical management and care in the burn unit can lead to s

Conidiobolomycosis is an uncommon, chronic, localized subcutaneous mycosis primarily affecting rhinofacial region. It is reported mainly from tropical and subtropical countries. The condition is underreported due to the lack of clinical suspicion and usually mismanaged. This rare mycosis is due to the genus Conidiobolus within the order Entomophthorales of class Zygomycetes. Here we present 3 cases of rhinofacial conidiobolomycosis in otherwise healthy adults from different parts of Sri Lanka over 1-year period. All patients had disfiguring subcutaneous lesions in the rhinofacial area. The dia

The pathogenic entomophthoralean fungi cause infection in insects and mammalian hosts. Basidiobolus and Conidiobolus species can be found in soil and insect, reptile, and amphibian droppings in tropical and subtropical areas. The life cycles of these fungi occur in these environments where infecting sticky conidia are developed. The infection is acquired by insect bite or contact with contaminated environments through open skin. Conidiobolus coronatus typically causes chronic rhinofacial disease in immunocompetent hosts, whereas some Conidiobolus species can be found in immunocompromised patie

The term 'entomophthoramycosis' classically refers to infections caused by members of the order Entomophthorales. A new subphylum, Entomophthoramycota, has been created to include Basidiobolomycetes, Neozygitomycetes and Entomophthoramycetes. Basidiobolomycetes encompass Basidiobolus spp., while the Entomophthoramycetes include Conidiobolus spp. Conidiobolus spp. characteristically cause rhinofacial entomophthoramycosis in apparently immunocompetent hosts. Conidiobolus spp. may also cause disseminated infection in immunocompromised patients. Basidiobolus spp. more typically cause subcutaneous

Conidiobolus entomophthoromycosis is a rare mycosis due to an ubiquitary telluric fungus. Although the organism is found around the world, it is more concentrated in warm, wet climates. Cases have been described in West Africa, Australia, South America and India. Conidiobolus spp was also to be found in animal like horse. The transmission mode of Conidiobolus has not been established but probably occurs via inhalation of fungal spores covering the nasal mucous membrane or from a minor trauma such as an insect bite. The clinical syndromes include intranasal tumour, nasal obstruction, broadening

Conidiobolus sp. causes conidiobolomycosis, an emerging invasive fungal disease that affects humans and animals, mainly in tropical regions. In sheep, the disease has a major economic impact. We report an outbreak of conidiobolomycosis on a sheep farm in the Brazilian Amazon, as well as give a brief review of the subject. Veterinary care was requested on a rural property on which 3 of 35 sheep had developed prostration, facial edema, and exophthalmos. Two of the sick animals died, and a third was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Acre (Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil).

Conidiobolomycosis is a tropical rhinofacial subcutaneous mycosis caused by Conidiobolus coronatus. It is characterized histopathologically by the presence of hyphae surrounded by an eosinophilic halo, the so-called Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon. There is no standard treatment, but itraconazole is an effective option.

BACKGROUND: Entomophthoromycosis constitutes a nosological group of subcutaneous mycoses including conidiobolomycosis (rhinofacial form) and basidiobomomycosis (subcutaneous form involving the trunk and the limbs). Conidiobolomycosis is characterized by a progressive nasal and facial deformity giving, in the evolved forms, a "hippopotamus snout". The literature review finds a hundred cases, with a tropism for the humid tropical regions. Methods. We report the observation of a 25-year-old patient, living in the equatorial zone, in the south of Gabon in a humid forest area, presenting a swollen

Entomophthoramycosis can be found in subtropical and tropical regions. This case illustrates common clinical features of conidiobolomycosis. Although this disease is not common, physicians working in these regions should be familiar with the clinical manifestations to enable early diagnosis and treatment.
