Community-based investigation of an outbreak of acute viral conjunctivitis in urban slums.

Nine hundred and sixteen people from 143 randomly selected households were included in this community-based investigation of an outbreak of acute viral conjunctivitis in urban slum communities of Delhi in 1994. During the 2-weeks recall period, 456 (49.8%) had conjunctivitis and 229 (25%) were symptomatic at the time of this investigation. Overall, females had a higher attack rate than males (P < 0.05). The attack rate increased with age (P < 0.001). A total of 61.6% of the conjunctival swabs were antigen positive as evidenced by indirect immunofluorescence assay. Viruses could be isolated fro

Viral investigation of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis outbreak (2003) in Nepal using molecular methods.

A nationwide outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) occurred in Nepal during August to September 2003, which affected nearly half of the population. Sixty conjunctival swabs from AHC patients were collected at Tilganga Eye Center in Kathmandu. For the first time in Nepal, we demonstrated the etiologic viral agents of AHC, namely, Coxsackievirus A24 variant (CA24v) by reverse transcription real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Of the 60 samples, 19 were positive for CA24v. No difference in the two genders was observed. Conversely, Adenovirus (AdV) was detected in 32 samples, wh

Isolated Ophthalmoplegia as an Atypical Manifestation of Miller Fisher Syndrome Post-viral Conjunctivitis.

Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is an uncommon variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome, typically identified by the presence of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and areflexia. While most cases follow this clinical pattern, atypical presentations lacking one or more components can complicate diagnosis. We report the case of an 81-year-old male with well-controlled hypertension who presented with acute-onset horizontal diplopia two weeks after a self-limiting episode of viral conjunctivitis. Neurological examination revealed complete bilateral ophthalmoplegia with preserved pupillary reflexes and no other focal

Molecular identification of viral agents associated with acute conjunctivitis: a prospective controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Viral conjunctivitis are the most frequent infections in ophthalmology clinics. The diagnosis is usually relying on clinical findings and medical history. However, topical antibiotics are often used unnecessarily addition to symptomatic treatment because of unsure agents. We aimed to detect the Adenovirus, Coxsackievirus and Enterovirus from conjunctiva and pharyngeal samples of patients. METHODS: The conjunctiva and pharyngeal samples of the patients with conjunctivitis were taken by Virocult transport media and kept at -80̊C up to study day. Adenovirus spp, Enterovirus 70 and En

Quantitative Investigation of Viral Load in Acute to Subacute Human Adenovirus Type 54 Conjunctivitis.

To understand the clinical course of human adenoviral (HAdV) conjunctivitis and establish a better treatment regimen, 38 eyes of 19 patients with HAdV-54 conjunctivitis for less than one week from onset were evaluated for clinical signs and symptoms and DNA copy numbers. A viral load of 104-105 is required to develop symptoms of HAdV conjunctivitis, as symptoms were present in eyes with viral loads of ≥104 at least once during the course. Next, it was observed that asymptomatic infections in the contralateral eyes are common, as the virus was detected in most eyes that did not develop conjunct

Viral Conjunctivitis Rates Unchanged Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic in an Ophthalmology Clinic.

BACKGROUND: Millions of acute conjunctivitis cases occur in the United States annually. The impact of COVID-19 mitigation practices on viral conjunctivitis incidence within ophthalmology clinics has not been reported. We hypothesized that viral conjunctivitis rates would decrease with implementation of such practices. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted at a single academic center's ophthalmology clinics. Electronic health record data was queried using ICD-10 diagnostic codes to include 649 patients aged 2-97 with viral, bacterial, or allergic conjunctivitis diagnosed either b

mTORC2-dependent autophagy inhibition regulates the replication of HSV-1 and adenovirus in viral keratitis & conjunctivitis.

Viral keratitis & conjunctivitis result in multiple ophthalmic symptoms and even progress to vision loss without timely intervention. Although multitudinous pathogens can cause ocular infections, the regulatory mechanisms underlying virus-host interactions remain incompletely defined. Our clinical and mechanistic investigations identify the co-infection of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and adenovirus as a predominant etiology of viral keratoconjunctivitis in Shenzhen, China (2024). The viral co-infection causes both severe symptoms and inflammations in clinical cases and in vitro. Mechan
