This study aimed to explore some correlates and potential reproductive consequences of consanguinity. We analysed data for 8515 ever-married women aged 15-49 derived from a household survey conducted in 2017 in six governorates. The prevalence of consanguineous marriage was 35.9%. The odds (OR (95%CI)) of consanguinity were higher in rural southern governorates (3.68 (3.03-4.46)), with less than secondary education (1.55 (1.42-1.7)), with unemployment (1.74(1.48-2.04)) and in the lowest wealth quintile (3.09 (2.66-3.6)). After adjusting for residence, education, wealth, age at marriage and the

BACKGROUND: Many epidemiological studies have indicated that inbreeding has little or no effect on the incidence of cancer. Due to the high prevalence of consanguinity in Qatar (54%), its influence may nevertheless be of special importance.
AIM: The aim of this study was to examine whether parental consanguinity affects the risk of cancer in a local Arab highly inbred population.
DESIGN: Matched case-control study.
SETTING: The study was carried out in Al-Amal cancer hospital and primary health care centers in Qatar over a period from August 2008 to February 2009.

The increase of parental consanguinity in multifactorial inheritance is evaluated by calculating the expected incidence of affected children whose parents are first cousins, using several values, namely for condition frequency and heritability of liability. This increase is compared to the expected increase in recessive inheritance, when one or more loci are involved. The method is illustrated by examples of recessive and multifactorial conditions and applied, as a test of discrimination between different modes of inheritance, to data on congenital glaucoma.

Introduction: Rare bleeding disorders (RBDs) are a heterogeneous group of bleeding disorders. Consanguineous marriage is the favorite partnership in many communities among a population of more than a billion. Consanguineous marriages allow the defective recessive genes in RBDs to remain in the family. Clinical approach to RBDs is not as straightforward as typical bleeding disorders, which are secondary to scarcity and variation of RBDs. However, in many developing countries, the limitations of diagnostic facilities, the supply of therapeutic coagulation concentrates, health budgets, and optima

BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2 inhibitors) are a relatively new class of medications used for the management of type II diabetes mellitus targeting the kidneys. Within the last decade, several warnings have been issued regarding the development of severe genitourinary infections, including necrotizing fasciitis, or Fournier's gangrene, in those with pre-existing type II diabetes and concomitant use of this drug class.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this review is to highlight and discuss the factors contributing to the development of Fournier's gangrene, its pathogene

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to assess the risk of major anomalies in the offspring of consanguineous couples, including data on the prenatal situation.
METHODS: Over 20 years (1993-2012), 35,391 fetuses were examined by prenatal sonography. In 675 cases (1.9%), parents were consanguineous, with 307 couples (45.5%) related as first cousins, 368 couples (54.5%) beyond first cousins. Detailed information was retrieved on 31,710 (89.6%) fetuses, (consanguineous 568: 1.8%).
RESULTS: Overall prevalence of major anomalies among fetuses with non-consanguineous parents was 2.9% (consa

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The rate of consanguineous marriage is high in Middle Eastern countries such as Iran. The relationship between consanguineous marriage and congenital heart disease is discussed in some studies, but there is not much data for relationship between atrial septal defect (ASD) and consanguineous marriage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between consanguineous marriage and ASD echocardiographic characteristics.
DESIGN AND SETTINGS: This was a cross-sectional study approved by Mashhad University of Medical Sciences ethics committee and took place in

UNLABELLED: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of lysosomal storage disorders caused by the deficiency of specific enzymes which leads to the lysosomal accumulation of glycosaminoglycanes. Mucopolysaccharidosis type I or Hurler disease is characterized by the deficiency of alpha-l-iduronidase enzyme. Mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA or Morquio A disease is due to the lack of N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate-sulfatase. Theses deficiencies result in a progressive accumulation of the substrates: dermatan and heparan sulfates for Mucopolysaccharidosis type I and keratan sulfate for MPS type IVA.

This study was conducted in the town of Konya, Turkey, on 1120 randomly selected women to find out the overall rate of consanguineous marriages among couples. The frequency of consanguineous marriages was found to be 23.2%. It was found that 14.6% of this figure was first cousin marriages and the rest was 8.6%. Consanguineous marriages were higher among women born in villages compared to those born in provinces and the town center. Based on the findings, it was not too difficult to say: the higher the level of education of women, the lower the rate of consanguineous marriages. The number of ch

This article examines the complex interplay of cultural practices, genetic health risks, and evolving legal frameworks surrounding consanguineous marriage, with a focus on England and Wales. Consanguineous unions, increase offspring's risk of autosomal recessive genetic disorders and congenital anomalies due to heightened homozygosity. The 'Born in Bradford' study revealed that 37% of babies in the cohort were born to related parents, with over 60% of marriages in the Pakistani-origin population being consanguineous. This was associated with a near doubling of the congenital anomaly risk (3% t

Heterotaxy (HTX) is a group of clinical conditions with a shared pathology of dislocation of one or more organs along the left-right axis. The etiology of HTX is tremendously heterogeneous spanning environmental factors, chromosomal aberrations, mono/oligogenic variants, and complex inheritance. However, in the vast majority of cases, the etiology of HTX remains elusive. Here, we sought to describe the yield of genetic analysis and spectrum of variants in HTX in our highly consanguineous population. Twenty-four affected individuals, from 19 unrelated families, were consecutively recruited. Gen

To determine the frequency of consanguinity among individuals with diabetes in Pakistan and to investigate the effect of consanguinity on the occurrence of diabetes at different familial levels, we also aimed to report public perceptions on the matter. This cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2023 and January 2024, targeting individuals with diabetes across Pakistan. Data were collected through an online questionnaire, which included questions on participants' demographics, family history, diabetes diagnosis, and awareness levels. Participants were classified based on their diab

BACKGROUND: Homozygous mutations, 2 identical gene versions (alleles), 1 from each biological parent, are exceptional. Clinical descriptions of affected families, comprising few carriers only, are scattered throughout the literature, hindering evidence generation.
METHODS: Included in this literature analysis were 5 RET families with ≥1 homozygous carrier and ≥3 heterozygous carriers per family.
RESULTS: In consanguineous families with first-degree cousins, homozygotes presented with node-positive medullary thyroid cancer and pheochromocytoma in their mid-teens, whereas heterozygotes present

Consanguinity commonly known as inbreeding is a state of offspring borne to couple sharing same ancestors. It is a least researched non-obstetric determinant of adverse birth outcome in developing countries like Pakistan. This hospital based study was designed to investigate the association between consanguineous status and neonatal asphyxia measured measured as low APGAR scores after birth in 879 newborns. The data regarding consanguineous status was obtained retrospectively. Potential covariates were incorporated for finding confounding effects. Data was analyzed in SPSS version 26.0 as mean
