UNLABELLED: Constraint-induced movement therapy is a promising technique for improving upper limb function in adults with hemiplegia. It involves restraint of the non-involved limb and intensive movement practice with the paretic limb. Although the technique has been applied successfully to children with cerebral palsy, only two studies have used it in children with acquired brain injury.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility and efficacy of constraint-induced movement therapy in children with acquired brain injury.
METHODS: We used a single-subject experimental design in three children (aged

Hemiplegia is a physical impairment that can occur in childhood following head trauma, cerebral vascular accident or transient ischemic attack (stroke), brain tumor, or congenital or perinatal injury. One of the most disabling symptoms of hemiplegia is unilaterally impaired hand and arm function. Sensory and motor impairments in children with hemiplegia compromise movement efficiency. Such children often tend not to use the affected extremity, which may further exacerbate the impairments, resulting in a developmentally learned non-use of the involved upper extremity, termed 'developmental disu

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Upper extremity impairment is one of the complications in hemiplegic children. The purpose of modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT) is to improve the function of impaired arms and hands in these children. This study compared the efficacy of mCIMT and the approach of neurodevelopmental therapy (NDT) on reaching capacity in children with spastic hemiplegia.
METHODS: Fifty-two spastic hemiplegic children ranging in age from four to 6 years were selected for this study from an outpatient clinic and biomechanical lab (Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University,

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of stroke recovery is related to the reorganization of cerebral activity that can be enhanced by rehabilitation therapy. Two well established treatments are Robot-Assisted Therapy (RT) and Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT), however, it is unknown whether there is a difference in the neuroplastic changes induced by these therapies, and if the modifications are related to motor improvement. Therefore, this study aims to identify neurophysiological biomarkers related to motor improvement of participants with chronic stroke that received RT or CIMT, and to test w

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the main cause of long-term disability, burdening people and healthcare systems. In stroke patients, modified Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (mCIMT) may improve lower extremity function. Protocol variability complicates efficacy evaluation.
OBJECTIVES: For stroke patients' lower extremity rehabilitation, examine mCIMT safety and effectiveness and identify important protocol components for motor recovery augmentation.
METHODS: An extensive PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and PEDro search found clinical studies on mCIMT for lower extremity mobility impairments in adu

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of constraint-induced movement therapy on stroke patients who had intact cognition and some voluntary finger extension and to identify optimal protocols to apply this therapy method. We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase for randomized controlled trials conducted prior to January 2022. The outcomes included the Motor Activity Log, Fugl-Meyer Assessment, and Wolf Motor Function Test. The inverse variance method fixed-effect model as well as the DerSimonian and Laird estimator random-effects model were applied, and the mean differenc

This investigation assessed selected gait parameters of children with hemiparesis before and after participation in a modified constraint-induced movement therapy program (mCIMT). Recent advances in the understanding of the relationship between mCIMT and cortical reorganization supports the use of upper-extremity mCIMT to treat lower extremity deficits. However, the effects of mCIMT on the gait patterns of children with hemiparesis remain unclear. Twelve preschool children participated in a mCIMT program for 5 consecutive days, 6 h each day. Pre- and post-intervention data, on the temporal-spa

BACKGROUND: Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) promotes hand function using intensive unimanual practice along with restraint of the less-affected hand. CIMT has not been compared with a treatment with equivalent dosing frequency and intensity in children with cerebral palsy (CP).
OBJECTIVES: The authors report a randomized trial comparing CIMT and a bimanual intervention (hand-arm intensive bimanual therapy; HABIT) that maintains the intensity of practice associated with CIMT but where children are engaged in functional bimanual tasks.
METHODS: A total of 42 participants with hemipl

This study examined whether restraining the dominant hand during an intensive training period could provide a means by which to improve adolescents' hemiplegic hand function. Nine adolescents with hemiplegic CP between the ages of 13 and 18 years were enrolled at a two-week day camp, of 7 hours/day. They were restricted in the use of their dominant hand in various daily and recreational activities by wearing a glove-like splint. The basis for intervention was built upon the adolescents' own motivation, and the activities were chosen to be challenging and specifically to provide opportunities f
