Functional motion changes during sperm transit to the site of fertilization and in-vitro applications: a review.

Continued research to define the parameters of sperm function should aid the evaluation of various approaches in infertility as well as the efficacy of contraceptives for men which do not necessarily achieve azoospermia. Many treatment forms have been advocated for male factor infertility but have yielded little effect. These included, for example, gonadotrophins, clomiphene citrate, the weakly androgenic steroid, mesterolone. Often, improvements in oligoasthenozoospermia that are not related to genital infection, do not attain normozoospermic levels. Owing to lack of success with various trea

Spousal Violence and Contraceptive Use among Married Afghan Women in a Nationally Representative Sample.

OBJECTIVE: Afghanistan is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of spousal violence (56%) and a low prevalence of contraceptive use (23%), yet there is no study assessing how spousal violence is related to contraceptive use, and what methods are most used by women. Therefore, this study examined the association between the number of types of spousal violence and contraceptive use. METHOD: Using data from 18,985 Afghan married women, aged 15 to 49, who responded to the 2015 Afghanistan Demographic and Health Survey, the current contraceptive method was grouped into five categories:

Male contraception.

The provision of safe, effective contraception has been revolutionized in the past 40 yr following the development of synthetic steroids and the demonstration that administration of combinations of sex steroids can be used to suppress ovulation and, subsequently, other reproductive functions. This review addresses the current standing of male contraception, long the poor relation in family planning but currently enjoying a resurgence in both scientific and political interest as it is recognized that men have a larger role to play in the regulation of fertility, whether seen in geopolitical or

Hair loss. What causes it and what can be done about it.

Although both men and women throughout history have seen hair as an important aspect of appearance, it is especially important today, in light of the great emphasis on youthfulness. A new interest in preventing baldness has been stimulated recently by the publicity given to certain products now under investigation that have shown an ability to retard or reverse male pattern baldness in certain individuals. Hair loss has many possible causes, such as systemic diseases, infections, toxic agents, and hormone imbalances. Treatment of the underlying disorder alleviates the shedding of hair. Balding

Contraception for the adolescent.

The primary care physician is in an excellent position to counsel adolescents about contraception. However, an adequate understanding of the biologic and psychosocial development of this particular age-group is imperative. In addition, communication skills are necessary to advise adolescents on use of contraceptives. The goal in counseling the adolescent about sexuality is to instill a sense of sexual responsibility and to provide individualized instruction in selecting the appropriate birth control method. General factors to remember in selecting the proper method include motivation, moral-et

Male contraception - Part of gender medicine and reproductive rights of men.

A pregnancy is in general the result of the sexual interaction of two individuals, with either different or same genders (male, female, non-binary etc). Preventing an unwanted pregnancy is therefore basically a "joint preventive behavior", which can be achieved by gender specific behaviors with gender specific methods in a specific sociocultural environment. This sociocultural environment (circumstances) determines the frame of gender specific behaviors (reproductive rights) and the available gender specific contraceptive methods (contraceptive technology). In the sociocultural history of cont

Shared risk and shared responsibility: the ethics of male contraceptives.

INTRODUCTION: Efforts to develop reversible male contraceptives analogous to female oral contraceptives are underway and may be introduced in the next decade. The advent of novel male contraceptives provides an opportunity for an ethical reformulation of the contraceptive paradigm given the relational, rather than individual, nature of sexual relationships, and family planning. For individuals in any sexual relationship that could result in pregnancy, issues of reproductive autonomy, freedom, equality in reproductive decision-making and risks-both of side effects and of unintended pregnancies-

Towards responsible ejaculations: the moral imperative for male contraceptive responsibility.

In this paper, I argue that men should take primary responsibility for protecting against pregnancy. Male long-acting reversible contraceptives are currently in development, and, once approved, should be used as the standard method for avoiding pregnancy. Since women assume the risk of pregnancy when they engage in penis-in-vagina sex, men should do their utmost to ensure that their ejaculations are responsible, otherwise women shoulder a double burden of pregnancy risk plus contraceptive responsibility. Changing the expectations regarding responsibility for contraception would render penis-in

Effect of aqueous extract of the bark of Carica papaya on testicular histology in Sprague-Dawley rats.

BACKGROUND: Males generally have few options for controlling their fertility and these options are far from being satisfactory. There is a great need for research to develop more contraceptive modalities for males. OBJECTIVE: The overall aim of this research was to determine the histological responses of the testes of Sprague-Dawley rats to aqueous extract of bark of Carica papaya using a single daily dose of 100 mg/kg and also to investigate if these responses are reversible or not. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty mature (6-8 weeks old) male Sprague-Dawley rats, divided into 2 equal groups, we

The impact of commonly prescribed drugs on male fertility.

To analyze the impact of commonly used drugs on male fertility, we assessed the clinical characteristics of patients with impaired semen quality while they were taking medication for chronic diseases and after switching therapies. Of 1768 infertile males, 201 patients were taking medications and had impaired semen quality without any seminal tract obstruction, spermatogenic abnormalities or hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Of these 201 men, a total of 165 had no history of testicular diseases nor abnormalities in any examinations. Amongst them, H1 receptor antagonists were the most common medica

Association between Intimate Partner Violence and Contraceptive Use Discontinuation in India.

Research on the association between experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) and contraceptive use discontinuation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is limited. This study aims to fill this important gap using microdata collected from women aged 15-49 in the 2015-2016 National Family Health Survey (NFHS). Analyses used multivariable multinomial logistic regressions stratified by long-acting reversible contraceptive methods (LARC)/non-LARC and condom/pill to examine the association between experience of IPV and contraceptive use discontinuation while still in need (DWSIN). Current concepts in contraception.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, contraceptive use has increased substantially over the past two decades. The increased demand for wider choices of contraceptive methods has resulted in extensive research and rigorous clinical trials. This has led to improvements on existing contraceptive methods and also the development of several new, more effective and acceptable methods with fewer side effects. Thus, this article presents a review of existing literature on recent developments on existing contraceptive methods. It also reviews recently developed contraceptive methods currently in use worldwide. METH

Male hormonal contraceptives.

Efforts are underway to develop additional forms of contraception for men. The most promising approach to male contraceptive development involves the administration of exogenous testosterone (T). When administered to a man, T functions as a contraceptive by suppressing the secretion of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone from the pituitary, thereby depriving the testes of the signals required for spermatogenesis. After 2-3 months of treatment, low levels of these gonadotropins lead to markedly decreased sperm counts and effective contraception in a majority of men. Hormonal co

Factors influencing women's decisions regarding birth planning in a rural setting in Kenya and their implications for family planning programmes.

Evidence suggests that socio-cultural barriers that limit the ability of women in sub-Saharan Africa to make decisions regarding contraceptive use and childbearing contribute to the slow uptake of contraception in this region. This paper explores factors influencing women's decisions regarding contraceptive uptake, switching and discontinuation, and the implications of those decisions for family planning programmes. Data were from in-depth interviews that were conducted in 2018 with 42 women who participated in a longitudinal research project implemented in Homa Bay County of Kenya. Participan
