After the development of postcoital hormonal interception, the postcoital use of IUDs to prevent pregnancy was proposed by Tatum. The major advantage of this treatment is that it avoids the use of the usual massive dose of estrogens (a very effective postcoital method) which is associated with nausea and vomiting. This is the 1st method to be effective up to 5 days after exposure, 3 days more than the estrogen treatment. It may also provide long-term contraception in women who wish to continue using the IUD. A major disadvantage of postcoital IUD use is that IUD insertion can produce serious c

Use of levonorgestrel as emergency contraception is a safe and effective measure to prevent unwanted pregnancy. However, ectopic gestation in case of failure is a known risk. Access to levonorgestrel without a prescription in many countries has made it impossible to estimate the exact incidence of this potential adverse event. Thus, spontaneous reporting of cases serves to alert physicians to this possibility. We present a case of ectopic pregnancy following use of levonorgestrel emergency contraception. To our knowledge, this is the first case report from India following introduction of levon

This review discusses the development of selective progestin receptor modulators (SPRMs) for use in women's health and specifically the use of ulipristal acetate (UPA) as emergency contraception (EC) and as a treatment for symptomatic fibroids in women who want to preserve their fertility or avoid a hysterectomy. As an EC, UPA 30 mg should be recommended for women, within 102 h of unprotected intercourse. As a treatment of fibroids, UPA (5 mg daily dose) should be administered for periods of three months as a pre-surgical strategy, reducing bleeding and fibroid size and facilitating surgery. A

BACKGROUND: Unintended pregnancy is a complex phenomenon which raise to take an emergency decision. Low contraceptive prevalence and high user failure rates are the leading causes of this unexpected situation. High user failure rates suggest the vital role of emergency contraception to prevent unplanned pregnancy. Levonorgestrel - a commonly used progestin for emergency contraception. However, little is known about its pharmacokinetics and optimal dose for use. Hence, there is a need to conduct a systematic review of the available evidences.

Emergency contraception means preventing pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse. This is also called postcoital contraception (PCC) or the 'morning-after pill'. High doses of oestrogen or progestogen or a combination of both may be used as PCC up to 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. The use of mifepristone as emergency contraception has also proved promising. Some women use emergency contraception, but there are many who do not know much about it. Users, providers and other health professionals need to be educated about this method. Emergency contraception does not fall within th

Emergency contraceptive pills are an essential and unique post-coital method to avoid a pregnancy, with evidence showing the significant role men can have in procurement and decisions to use. Global Health recommendations specify that emergency contraceptive pills be used sparingly and under specific conditions. This increasingly misaligns with the myriad conceptualisations and rationales among the public for why they choose to use emergency contraceptive pills. There has been a paucity of research aiming to understanding men's involvement and how they shape women's access, choice, and autonom

Objectives: Emergency contraception (EC) provides an opportunity to avoid an unwanted pregnancy following unprotected sexual intercourse (UPSI), failure of a regular contraceptive method, or after sexual assault. Two main methods are currently available: oral pills or the copper-T intrauterine device. In recent years there has been some debate regarding the efficacy of oral therapy in obese women. In this brief commentary we review new evidence, published after the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) referral of 2014, relating to the eff

Innovation is not a synonym for progress. A good knowledge of the current contraceptives (composition, doses, side effects, price) and a good counselling remain the best guarantors of an effective contraception. The "two days later after aftermorning pill" can not take the place of the classic "tomorrow after pill". The oral contraception taken "non stop" and the "quick start" method are real progress. Male contraception do protect men against unwanted pregnancy.

Emergency contraception, also known as postcoital contraception, is therapy used to prevent pregnancy after an unprotected or inadequately protected act of sexual intercourse. Common indications for emergency contraception include contraceptive failure (eg, condom breakage or missed doses of oral contraceptives) and failure to use any form of contraception (). Although oral emergency contraception was first described in the medical literature in the 1960s, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first dedicated product for emergency contraception in 1998. Since then, several n

OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe the current usage patterns, knowledge regarding, and perception of emergency contraception in adolescent patients.
STUDY DESIGN: We surveyed female patients ages 14 to 21 seen at the Pediatric and Gynecology Clinic regarding emergency contraception. We posed questions to understand adolescent awareness, personal usage, and means of obtaining emergency contraception. We also explored respondent knowledge of emergency contraception and potential barriers to access.
RESULTS: Of 261 patients approached, 253 completed the survey with a mean age of 16.7 ± 1.7 years

There have been several recent advances in the contraceptive methods available to adolescents in the United States. A new monthly injectable method combines efficacy and ease of compliance with excellent menstrual cycle control. Very low-dose oral contraceptive pills containing gonane progestins decrease the incidence of estrogen-related side effects, and are associated with low rates of breakthrough bleeding. Oral contraceptive pills prescribed in continuous cycles can provide relief from menstrual-related symptoms, and may improve contraceptive effectiveness. Noncontraceptive benefits of ora

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, awareness and use of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) among young women has rapidly increased in Ghana; however, the rate of unintended pregnancy among this group remains high. We conducted a qualitative study to better understand the context and patterns of ECP use among young unmarried women in Ghana.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews with unmarried sexually active women aged 18-24 in Accra, Ghana to explore their perceptions, experiences, and opinions regarding sexual relationships and contraceptive methods, and to examine the factors that infl

OBJECTIVE: To assess over-the-counter emergency contraception pills (ECP) availability in Dallas pharmacies across income levels.
METHODS: Secret shoppers visited 83 pharmacies (47 high-, 36 low-income zip codes) to document ECP visibility and restricted storage. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests compared visible availability by income group.
RESULTS: ECP was visibly available on the shelves in 53% (44 out of 83) of pharmacies. Of these, 84% (37 out of 44) used restricted storage. Availability was higher in high-income (64%) than low-income areas (39%) (P = .024).
CONCLUSION: ECP

BACKGROUND: To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of the combined regimen (consisting of condoms and emergency contraception pills (ECP)) and using condoms only for the purpose of preventing pregnancy.
METHODS: One-thousand-five-hundred-and-sixty-two (1,562) couples as volunteers enrolled at nine centers in Shanghai. Eight-hundred-and-twelve (812) were randomized to use male condoms and ECP (i.e., Levonorgestrel) as a back-up to condoms (the intervention group) and 750 to use male condoms only(the control group), according to their working unit. Participants were visited at admission and
