The Effect of Pupil Size on Cone Contrast Sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Measuring contrast sensitivity for each of the three cone types separately allows for a more precise and clinically valuable assessment of color vision. This study examined how pupil size affects cone contrast sensitivity (CCS). METHODS: This study included 50 participants of equal gender. The mean age was 20.88 (±1.8) years. Using the ColorDx, a Landolt C stimulus of various sizes in an adaptive screening mode, we sequentially determined contrast sensitivity for long-, medium-, and short-wavelength stimuli. Two consecutive measurements were performed on participants, one with the

disease, characterized by motor and vocal tics with no changes in the ocular structures in the ophthalmological evaluations. The visual field evaluations suggest a reduction in central visual field sensitivity. The studies on visual function in this population is scarce. In this case report we present a patient with GTS who has significant alterations in the measure of contrast sensitivity for second order vision without any vision complaints. This reduction occurred in the measure of contrast sensitivity with a white noise carrier for practically all tested space frequencies. The mean contras

Serotonin improves behavioral contrast sensitivity of freely moving rats.

Serotonin (5-HT) is a neuromodulator secreted from serotonergic neurons located in the pons and upper brain stem in a behavioral context-dependent manner. The serotonergic axon terminals innervate almost the whole brain, causing modulatory actions on various brain functions including vision. Our previous study demonstrated the visual responses of neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) of anesthetized monkeys were modulated by the activation of 5-HT receptors depending on the response magnitude, in which 5-HT2A receptor-selective agonists enhanced weak visual responses but not strong respons

Impact of scattering and spherical aberration in contrast sensitivity.

We investigated the impact in spatial visual performance of the combined presence of different amounts of spherical aberration and intraocular scattering in the eye. In a group of subjects, contrast sensitivity at 6 cycles per degree was measured when viewing through holographic diffusers to produce different levels of scattering and with their spherical aberration simultaneously controlled using an adaptive-optics visual simulator. For elevated levels of scattering, the addition of small amounts of spherical aberration either does not decrease, or even may slightly increase, contrast sensitiv

Decreased color discrimination and contrast sensitivity in Parkinson's disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) often complain of blurred vision or even of distinctive visual disturbances like hallucinations and illusions. Recent studies have emphasized the potential influence of primary visual deficits of color and contrast discrimination. To study primary visual function, we studied color discrimination (CD) and contrast sensitivity (CS) during 'on' medication in PD patients and compared them to non-PD subjects. Twenty one PD patients were compared to 30 age-matched controls using CD tested by the D-15 Lanthony test (D15) and the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test (

[Changes in contrast sensitivity in children with optic neuritis].

Changes of spatial contrast sensitivity (SCS) were studied in children with optic neuritis in the acute, convalescent, and remote periods of disease. A selective reduction of SCS of involved and intact eyes in the high frequency band was revealed, indicating the predominant involvement of the parvocellular subsystem of vision in optic neuritis. A correlation of SCS disorders with abnormalities of visual evoked potentials was revealed. The detected regularities indicate shifts on the part of the retrochiasmal structures in patients with optic neuritis, this being confirmed by studies making use

Contrast sensitivity in organic-solvent-induced chronic toxic encephalopathy.

This is a study of visual contrast sensitivity in a series of subjects with previously diagnosed occupational organic-solvent-induced chronic toxic encephalopathy. Contrast sensitivity was measured for 16 subjects using the Vistech VCTS 6500 chart. The results were compared with age-stratified normal data. Six of the 16 subjects (37.5%) recorded abnormal contrast sensitivity results. Monocular abnormalities were found for two (33%) of these subjects. Statistically significant abnormalities in contrast sensitivity were observed at the intermediate spatial frequencies of three cycles per degree

Effect of Fresnel prism dispersion on contrast sensitivity function.

Fresnel prisms are often used in orthoptics for binocular anomalies and in low vision for visual field defects. These prisms are made of optical polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and this material increases chromatic dispersion and produces a loss of contrast. In this study, the effect of chromatic dispersion on contrast sensitivity is determined. Contrast thresholds over a wide range of spatial frequencies are obtained on a number of subjects with the use of Fresnel prisms ranging from 5 to 30 prism dioptres. As predicted there is a decrease in visual acuity and cut-off spatial frequency threshold as

Contrast sensitivity measurements in acute and resolved optic neuritis.

We measured contrast sensitivity by means of Arden grating plates in 41 eyes with acute optic neuritis and in 51 eyes with resolved optic neuritis. The scores were abnormal in 93% of eyes in the acute phase and 78% in the resolved phase irrespective of visual acuity. Even when acuity improved to 6/7.5 or better with resolution of the neuritis, 67% of eyes still showed abnormal contrast sensitivity. Since Snellen acuity represents just one point at the high spatial frequency end of the contrast sensitivity function, a patient in whom acuity improves to 6/6 with resolution of optic neuritis may

Detection of visual defects using the contrast sensitivity function.

In this chapter the theoretical reasons were outlined and clinical data summarized as to why spatial contrast measurements can reveal visual losses that are not uncovered by testing visual acuity, no matter which optotype one uses or how carefully the measurement is made. Spatial contrast sensitivity measurements may disclose different types of contrast losses in patients with different lesions but with identical visual acuity. The relationship of different types of spatial contrast sensitivity losses (plotted as visuograms) to specific location or cause of lesions is not yet clear. Patients w

Circadian timing does not modulate human temporal contrast sensitivity.

Previous studies have reported diurnal variations in color perception and luminance contrast sensitivity, suggesting modulation of visual processing by the circadian pacemaker. To clarify potential time-of-day effects, we examined whether cone-mediated temporal contrast sensitivity is modulated by circadian timing. We disentangled circadian and homeostatic influences on human visual performance using a 40-hour forced desynchrony protocol. Twelve participants (five female participants, 24.4 ± 2.9 years, range 19-30) followed a repeating 3.75-hour cycle comprising 2 hours 30 minutes of wakefulne

Differences in Contrast Sensitivity Measurement With Letters and Gratings.

PURPOSE: To compare contrast sensitivity function (CSF) measurements obtained with either Gabor gratings or Sloan letters using the same LCD-based device, to evaluate the reliability of letter-based CSF testing and to establish normative values in a young healthy population. METHODS: A new computerised chart for psychophysical measurements in clinical settings was used (Vision Chart, CSO). Three related investigations were conducted. In Study 1 (n = 44), a randomised crossover design measured monocular CSF with gratings and letters at four spatial frequencies (1.5, 3.0, 6.0 and 12.0 cycles/de
