Four subtypes of conversion disorder were described in DSM-IV. There are few publications concerning studies aimed at separating the subtypes of the conversion disorder. Usually, pseudoseizures are in focus and attempts are made to differentiate these seizures from other disorders. The aim of the present study has been to investigate differences between the four subtypes of the conversion disorder and to discuss the possibilities for a reclassification. Ninety-five patients were seen by two researchers and diagnosed as conversion disorders. The subtypes were determined according to DSM-IV crit

Neurological complications related to spinal anesthesia are exceptional, but their consequences are serious. We report a case of conversion disorder, which was initially diagnosed as monoplegia caused by spinal anesthesia. The patient was a 36-year-old, 88 kg woman with a history of psychogenic aphonia. She underwent plastic surgery for both toes under spinal anesthesia. On the following day, her left leg remained paralyzed with loss of sensation below the knee level. She practiced walking according to rehabilitation program, but paralysis became worse gradually. As the hospitalization was pro

IMPORTANCE: Freud argued that in conversion disorder (CD) the affect attached to stressful memories is "repressed" and "converted" into physical symptoms, although this has never been subject to scientific study to our knowledge.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the neural correlates of recall of life events judged to be of causal significance in CD.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Case-control study. Academic research setting among 12 patients with motor CD and 13 healthy control subjects.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Stressful life events were assessed using the Life Events and Difficulties Schedu

We present the case of a 15-year-old-boy on sertraline (Zoloft) who presented to the Emergency Department with palpitations, tremor, and weakness after starting erythromycin. Upon admission to the hospital, he developed syncopal-like episodes of unresponsiveness associated with body-wide jerking and stiffening as well as tachycardia and hypertension. He was initially believed to have serotonin syndrome and was transferred to a pediatric Intensive Care Unit where the diagnosis of conversion disorder was made. We discuss the salient features of serotonin syndrome and conversion disorder and emph

OBJECTIVE: It is common in health care settings for adolescent patients to report physical symptoms that are unexplained by physical disease or pathophysiologic processes. The diagnosis of conversion disorder is difficult to make as many of these patients present to primary care with complex, difficult-to-understand medical symptoms. Patients can present with a medical dilemma and a symptom model consistent with a conversion disorder, but there is a danger of misdiagnosis without a thorough medical work up.
METHOD: This case report describes a patient where the misdiagnosis of conversion diso

Psychiatric symptoms are often manifested in verbal expression. Generally, the contents of such expression are pathological. The formal abnormalities of speech are also observed in various mental disorders, as far as quantitative abnormalities are concerned. However, disturbance of intonation, namely disprosody, is more commonly observed in organic disorders of the brain. When the accent of words and the intonation of sentences changes from that of a native speaker, the speech sounds like the broken language of untrained foreigners. Such foreign accent syndrome is usually an issue of neuropsyc

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to: a) assess the link between sexual and/or physical abuse and dissociation in conversion disorder and chronic pelvic pain patients; and b) assess whether this effect is independent of level of general psychopathology.
METHOD: This report examines data from four separate samples. Fifty-two patients with chronic pelvic pain, 61 patients with non-epileptic seizures, and two samples of patients (102 and 54) with predominantly motor or sensory types of conversion disorder were studied.
RESULTS: Using point-biserial correlations no compelling evidence for

Agricultural soil harbors a diverse microbiome that can form beneficial relationships with plants, including the inhibition of plant pathogens. Pseudomonas spp. are one of the most abundant bacterial genera in the soil and rhizosphere and play important roles in promoting plant health. However, the genetic determinants of this beneficial activity are only partially understood. Here, we genetically and phenotypically characterize the Pseudomonas fluorescens population in a commercial potato field, where we identify strong correlations between specialized metabolite biosynthesis and antagonism o

OBJECTIVES: To examine patterns of emotion processing in children and adolescents with conversion disorders and to determine whether those patterns are associated with particular clusters of conversion symptoms. Autobiographical narratives were used to investigate the organization of information about distressing feelings and memories.
METHODS: Structured interviews about attachment relationships and autobiographical events were administered to 76 controls and 76 matched subjects aged 6 to 18 years. Age-appropriate assessments of attachment were used: the School-aged Assessment of Attachment

BACKGROUND: Conversion and dissociative disorders are conditions where people experience unusual neurological symptoms or changes in awareness or identity. However, symptoms and clinical signs cannot be explained by a neurological disease or other medical condition. Instead, a psychological stressor or trauma is often present. The symptoms are real and can cause significant distress or problems with functioning in everyday life for the people experiencing them.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the beneficial and harmful effects of psychosocial interventions of conversion and dissociative disorders in ad

Although somatization disorder and conversion disorder are linked in DSM-III and DSM-III-R, they have very different histories. To directly compare these disorders, we reviewed the records accrued for 2 years at a large medical center and identified 65 somatization disorder patients and 51 conversion disorder patients. They differed substantially. The large majority (78%) of conversion disorder patients and nearly all (95%) of the somatization disorder patients were women. Ages at onset occurred throughout the life span among conversion disorder patients but mostly before the age of 21 among t

The purpose of this study was to evaluate emotion dysregulation and temperament-character traits in adolescents with functional neurological symptom disorder (FNSD). Forty adolescents with FNSD and 40 healthy adolescents were evaluated by a semiconstructed diagnosis interview, Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Regulation of Emotions Questionnaire (REQ), and Children's Somatization Inventory-24 (CSI-24). The external and internal dysfunctional emotion regulation scores of REQ, all subscales of DERS, except the awareness subscale, and CSI

IMPORTANCE: Understanding the role of substance use disorders in conversion from schizotypal disorder to schizophrenia may provide physicians and psychiatrists with important tools for prevention or early detection of schizophrenia.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether substance use disorders, in particular cannabis use disorder, are associated with conversion to schizophrenia in individuals with schizotypal disorder.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study included a population-based sample of all individuals born in Denmark from January 1, 1981, through August 10, 201

INTRODUCTION: Several neuroimaging studies have been conducted to demonstrate the specific structural and functional brain correlations of conversion disorder. Although the findings of neuroimaging studies are not consistent, when evaluated as a whole, they suggest the presence of significant brain abnormalities. The aim of this study is to investigate brain metabolic activity through F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose PET/MRI in order to shed light on the neural correlates of conversion disorder.
METHODS: 20 patients diagnosed with conversion disorder were included in the study. Hamilton Depression and

OBJECTIVES: Patients with unipolar psychotic depression (PD) are at high risk of developing bipolar disorder (BD). This conversion has important implications for the choice of treatment. This study, therefore, aimed to identify risk factors associated with diagnostic conversion from PD to BD.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based, historical prospective cohort study by merging data from Danish registers. Patients assigned an ICD-10 diagnosis of PD between 1 January 1995 and 31 December 2007 were identified in the Danish Central Psychiatric Research Register and were followed until the deve

OBJECTIVE: To examine 3-year rates of conversion to dementia, and risk factors for such conversion, in a population-based sample with diverse types of cognitive impairment.
METHODS: All elderly (aged 65 or older) residents of Cache County, UT, were invited to undergo two waves of dementia screening and assessment. Three-year follow-up data were available for 120 participants who had some form of mild cognitive impairment at baseline. Of these, 51 had been classified at baseline with prodromal Alzheimer disease (proAD), and 69 with other cognitive syndromes (CS).
RESULTS: Three-year rates of
