Moderate cardiac vagal tone predicts more cooperation in highly sensitive individuals.

Cooperation, as a mutual collaboration, is a defining feature of human social life. Individual characteristics can influence cooperation. Recent studies have shown a quadratic relationship between cardiac vagal tone (CVT), an index of self-regulation, and prosocial behaviors. Individual differences in cooperation might also vary as a function of people's environmental sensitivity (ES), i.e., may be influenced by individual differences in the perception and processing of inner and external stimuli. We tested the direct and interactive effect of CVT and ES on cooperative behaviors in two indepen

Moderate cardiac vagal tone is associated with more cooperation in children.

Childhood is a crucial period for prosocial development, including cooperative behaviors. Recent studies have shown a quadratic relation (inverted U-shape curve) between cardiac vagal tone (CVT) and various prosocial emotions and behaviors in children, but data are lacking on cooperative behaviors. In a sample of 111 school-aged children (M = 7.77; SD = 1.24, range: 6-11), we tested the association between the root mean square of successive differences in interbeat intervals (RMSSD) at rest, and cooperative behavior in a task designed to be comparable to a stag hunt game. We found evidence for

Neural traits characterize unconditional cooperators, conditional cooperators, and noncooperators in group-based cooperation.

Contributing to and maintaining public goods are important for a functioning society. In reality, however, we see large variations in contribution behavior. While some individuals are not cooperative, others are highly so. Still others cooperate only to the extent they believe others will. Although these distinct behavioral types clearly have a divergent social impact, the sources of heterogeneity are poorly understood. We used source-localized resting electroencephalography in combination with a model-free clustering approach to participants' behavior in the Public Goods Game to explain heter

Test-taking behaviors in a neurocognitive assessment: associations with school-age outcomes in a Finnish longitudinal follow-up.

Test-taking behaviors (i.e., task focus, maintenance of attention, and cooperation) affect children's cognitive test performance, and, thus, it is critical to take test-taking behavior into account when drawing conclusions and making recommendations. Prior studies have evaluated test-taking behaviors at the end of the assessment; the present study focused on the fluctuation of cooperation and attention during a neuropsychological assessment. We examined the attention and cooperation of 5-year-old children in a test-taking situation; the associations between these aspects of their test-taking b

Cooperation with Teachers as a Mediator of the Relationship between Family Conflict and Children's Psychological Difficulties.

Parent-child conflict can have a series of negative consequences concerning youth emotional and behavioral development. The link between family conflict and children's externalizing symptoms is well established, whereas the association with internalizing symptoms is less explored. Within the school context, children are engaged in other meaningful relationships (i.e., with teachers and peers) which contribute to their growth. This cross-sectional study aimed at understanding whether a cooperative behavior with the teachers is able to mediate the association between parent-child conflict and ch

Tokens enable cooperation without identification or memory.

Indirect reciprocity enables cooperation between strangers when (i) individuals can be recognized and (ii) reputations can be remembered. Here, we show that neither condition is necessary. If reputation is embodied in a recognizable token issued by an arbiter, donors can base their decisions on token possession rather than memory. By allowing for multiple tokens, such an externalized reputational system promotes more cooperation than existing models of indirect reciprocity. This advantage arises from greater robustness to noise and comes despite the absence of individual identification or shar

Movement patterns, social dynamics, and the evolution of cooperation.

The structure of social interactions influences many aspects of social life, including the spread of information and behavior, and the evolution of social phenotypes. After dispersal, organisms move around throughout their lives, and the patterns of their movement influence their social encounters over the course of their lifespan. Though both space and mobility are known to influence social evolution, there is little analysis of the influence of specific movement patterns on evolutionary dynamics. We explored the effects of random movement strategies on the evolution of cooperation using an a

Effects of co-players' identity and reputation in the public goods game.

Players' identity and their reputation are known to influence cooperation in economic games, but little is known about how they interact. Our study aimed to understand how presenting pre-programmed co-players' identities (face photos; names) along with their previous cooperation history (reputation) could influence participants' cooperative decisions in a public goods game. Participants (N = 759) were allocated to one of six experimental groups: (i) control (no information); (ii) only reputation (neutral, free-rider, or cooperative); (iii) only face; (iv) face with reputation; (v) only name; (

Projective Indicators of Underlying Dental Anxiety in Children with Positive Frankl Behavior: A Draw-a-Person Assessment During Caries Removal.

Background: Positive behavior during dental treatment does not necessarily indicate the absence of anxiety in children. Behavioral assessment scales, such as the Frankl Behavior Rating Scale, evaluate observable behavior but may fail to identify underlying emotional tension that may accompany dental treatment. Objectives: To evaluate indicators of underlying emotional tension in children classified as cooperative based on the Frankl Behavior Rating Scale (scores 3 and 4) undergoing conventional caries removal or chemo-mechanical excavation with Brix 3000. Methods: Sixty children aged 4-6 years

Simultaneous intracranial recordings of interacting brains reveal neurocognitive dynamics of human cooperation.

Cooperative interactions profoundly shape individual and collective behaviors of social animals. Successful cooperation requires coordinated efforts by cooperators toward collective goals. However, the underlying behavioral dynamics and neuronal mechanisms within and between cooperating brains remain largely unknown. We recorded intracranial electrophysiological signals from human pairs engaged in a cooperation game. We show that teammate coordination and goal pursuit make distinct contributions to the behavioral cooperation dynamics. Increases and decreases in high-gamma activity in the tempo

Discipline and punishment in panoptical public goods games.

In Public Goods Games (PGG), the temptation to free-ride on others' contributions poses a significant threat to the sustainability of cooperative societies. Therefore, societies strive to mitigate this through incentive systems, employing rewards and punishments to foster cooperative behavior. Thus, peer punishment, in which cooperators sanction defectors, as well as pool punishment, where a centralized punishment institution executes the punishment, is deeply analyzed in previous works. Although the literature indicates that these methods may enhance cooperation on social dilemmas under parti

An fNIRS hyperscanning study on the influence of team type and sex on athletes' interpersonal trust and neural mechanisms.

Studies show that athletes have better trust behaviors than ordinary college students, likely due to their long-term sports training. However, the impact of sports training may vary with the team-based nature of the sports. It's still unclear whether there are differences in interpersonal trust behaviors and neural mechanisms among athletes from different types of teams. This study compared the differences in these aspects between athletes from cooperative-competitive teams and those from competitive-cooperative teams. Our study recruited 48 athletes dyads. 24 dyads were from team sports (e.g.

The cluster digging behavior of larvae confers trophic benefits to fitness in insects.

Collective behaviors efficiently impart benefits to a diversity of species ranging from bacteria to humans. Fly larvae tend to cluster and form coordinated digging groups under crowded conditions, yet understanding the rules governing this behavior is in its infancy. We primarily took advantage of the Drosophila model to investigate cooperative foraging behavior. Here, we report that Drosophila-related species and the black soldier fly have evolved a conserved strategy of cluster digging in food foraging. Subsequently, we investigated relative factors, including larval stage, population densit

Self-concept clarity and the management of social conflict.

In 4 studies we examined the relationship between self-concept clarity and conflict management. Individuals with higher self-concept clarity were overall more active and showed more cooperative problem-solving behavior than people with low self-concept clarity. There were no relationships with contending or yielding. The positive relationship with cooperative behavior was mediated by less rumination (Study 2) and moderated by conflict intensity (Study 3). Specifically, it applied to relatively mild conflicts (Study 3). Finally, Study 4 extended these findings to the group level: Dyad members w

Are you willing to cooperate? The role of childhood adversities, family unpredictability and physiological self-regulation.

Cooperation is a universal phenomenon involving individuals working together to achieve a shared goal. Little attention has been given to how harsh environments in terms of childhood adversities and family unpredictability might be linked to individual's engagement in cooperative behaviors and on how the persons' physiological ability to adapt to the environment might influence this association. To fill this gap, we conducted two studies. The first showed in 1296 participants (44.44 % male, Mage = 29.95, SD = 11.50) that adversities favor cooperation as individuals may strengthen bonds to alle

Two distinct neural mechanisms underlying indirect reciprocity.

Cooperation is a hallmark of human society. Humans often cooperate with strangers even if they will not meet each other again. This so-called indirect reciprocity enables large-scale cooperation among nonkin and can occur based on a reputation mechanism or as a succession of pay-it-forward behavior. Here, we provide the functional and anatomical neural evidence for two distinct mechanisms governing the two types of indirect reciprocity. Cooperation occurring as reputation-based reciprocity specifically recruited the precuneus, a region associated with self-centered cognition. During such coope

Promotion of cooperation induced by appropriate payoff aspirations in a small-world networked game.

Based on learning theory, we adopt a stochastic learning updating rule to investigate the evolution of cooperation in the Prisoner's Dilemma game on Newman-Watts small-world networks with different payoff aspiration levels. Interestingly, simulation results show that the mechanism of intermediate aspiration promoting cooperation resembles a resonancelike behavior, and there exists a ping-pong vibration of cooperation for large payoff aspiration. To explain the nontrivial dependence of the cooperation level on the aspiration level, we investigate the fractions of links, provide analytical resul

Miconazole Promotes Cooperative Ability of a Mouse Model of Alzheimer Disease.

BACKGROUND: Cooperative defect is 1 of the earliest manifestations of disease patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) exhibit, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. METHODS: We evaluated the cooperative function of APP/PS1 transgenic AD model mice at ages 2, 5, and 8 months by using a cooperative drinking task. We examined neuropathologic changes in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Another experiment was designed to observe whether miconazole, which has a repairing effect on myelin sheath, could promote the cooperative ability of APP/PS1 mice in the early AD-like stage. We also inves

Rules of social exchange: game theory, individual differences and psychopathology.

Human social interaction is rarely guided by pure reason. Instead, in situation in which humans have the option to cooperate, to defect, or to punish non-cooperative behavior of another person, they quite uniformly tend to reciprocate "good" deeds, reject unfair proposals, and try to enforce obedience to social rules and norms in non-cooperative individuals ("free-riders"), even if the punishment incurs costs to the punisher. Abundant research using various game theoretical approaches has examined these apparently irrational human behaviors. This article reviews the evolutionary rationale of h
