Desert dust improves the photophysiology of heat-stressed corals beyond iron.

Desert dust is an important source of essential metals for marine primary productivity, especially in oligotrophic systems surrounded by deserts, such as the Red Sea. However, there are very few studies on the effects of dust on reef-building corals and none on the response of corals to heat stress. We therefore supplied dust to two coral species (Stylophora pistillata and Turbinaria reniformis) kept under control conditions (26 °C) or heat stress (32 °C). Since dust releases large amounts of iron (Fe) in seawater, among other metals, the direct effect of different forms of Fe enrichment on co

Evaluating Candidatus Aquirickettsia rohweri gene expression upon nutrient enrichment in disease-susceptible Acropora cervicornis.

Ocean warming, disease, and pollution have contributed to global declines in coral abundances and diversity. In the Caribbean, corals previously dominated reefs, providing an architectural framework for diverse ecological habitats, but have significantly declined due to infectious disease and anthropogenic climate change. Key species like the coral Acropora cervicornis are critically endangered, prompting researchers to focus on scientific endeavors to identify factors influencing coral disease resistance and resilience. We previously showed that disease susceptibility, growth rates, and bleac

Ultrastructural responses in field-bleached and experimentally stressed Amphistegina gibbosa (Class Foraminifera).

Amphistegina are the most common foraminifers with algal endosymbionts found on reefs and carbonate shelves worldwide. Like zooxanthellate corals and other reef organisms with algal symbionts, Amphistegina respond to photoxidative stress by bleaching. This paper documents ultrastructural changes that occur during bleaching under field and laboratory conditions. Nine chambers from the outer whorl of each of 22 normal-appearing and 11 partly bleached specimens of Amphistegina gibbosa, which were collected from Conch Reef, Florida, USA, were examined using transmission electron microscopy. Size-weight relationships for estimating harvestable biomass of Acropora corals on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Although hard corals (order Scleractinia) are listed in Appendix II of the Convention for the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), there is significant ongoing wild harvest and international trade, mostly for the aquarium industry. Acropora corals account for the majority of aquarium corals harvested and traded, but are also extremely vulnerable to fisheries-independent threats, especially climate-induced coral bleaching. Reconciling effects of coral harvesting is complicated as harvest limits are based on weight, while there is limited data on standing biomass of Acropora from d

Thermally resistant coral Stylophora pistillata survives but does not thrive under chronic elevated baseline temperature.

Coral reefs are threatened worldwide from unprecedented increases in ocean temperatures, resulting in corals gradually living closer to their maximum thermal threshold. With ocean temperatures expected to warm up to 3 °C by 2100, understanding the effects of chronic elevated baseline temperature is important in determining the thermal physiological limits of corals and developing realistic restoration strategies to ensure the future of coral reefs. Here, we tested the effects of 26 weeks (i.e., six months) of elevated temperatures of + 2.5 °C (27.5 °C) and + 5 °C (30 °C) above a baseline of 25

Choice of traits defines the scope for assisted evolution of corals under climate change.

Marine heatwaves, exacerbated by climate change, are causing widespread coral mortality. Novel host-associated assisted evolution interventions, such as selective breeding, are now being considered to enhance coral heatwave tolerance and promote population persistence. Yet the evolutionary constraints associated with targeting different heat tolerance traits and the risks of unintended fitness costs remain uncertain. Here, we quantify key life history traits for Acropora aff. digitifera corals in a pedigree-tracked managed population. We find weak-to-moderate positive genetic correlations amon

Ciguatera update.

Ciguatera fish poisoning is probably more important than any other form of seafood poisoning. Its epidemiology is complex and it is impossible to predict outbreaks. Toxic fish (which look, taste and smell normal) contain ciguatoxins derived from microalgae via the food chain. The toxins are not destroyed by cooking and, if consumed in sufficient dose, can cause symptoms persisting for weeks, months or years. The incidence of ciguatera is expected to increase in association with global warming and widespread bleaching and death of coral.

Assessing the ecological effects of human impacts on coral reefs in Bocas del Toro, Panama.

Environmental and biological reef monitoring was conducted in Almirante Bay (Bahía Almirante) in Bocas del Toro, Panama, to assess impacts from anthropogenic developments. An integrated monitoring investigated how seasonal temperature stress, turbidity, eutrophication and physical impacts threatened reef health and biodiversity throughout the region. Environmental parameters such as total suspended solids [TSS], carbon isotopes (δ(13)C), C/N ratios, chlorophyll a, irradiance, secchi depth, size fractions of the sediments and isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon [DIC] of the water

Effects of cryopreservation on the glycan profile of Symbiodiniaceae.

Symbiodiniaceae are crucial dinoflagellate symbionts for corals. They are affected by climate change-induced temperature rises that lead to coral bleaching, impacting coral reefs' health. Cryopreservation offers a solution to ensuring long-term storage of this species, preserving genetic diversity and viability. However, cryoinjury's impacts on glycan, a class of biomolecules with diverse biological roles including the initiation of coral-Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis, remain unknown. Thus, we examined the glycan profile of Breviolum psygmophilum cells cultured for varied periods post-thaw. The ce

The seven sins of climate change: A review of rates of change, and quantitative impacts on ecosystems and water quality in the Great Barrier Reef.

The term climate change encompasses many types of impacts and threats to the long-term outlook of coastal marine ecosystems. Based on a structured Evidence Summary methodology, this review synthesises the peer-reviewed knowledge on climate change impacts on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). We summarise the observed and predicted region-specific rates of change for seven climate change factors; three representing episodic extreme weather events (heatwaves, tropical storms, and extreme rainfall events), and four chronic progressive climate change factors (rising temperatures, ocean acidification an

On the use of 31P NMR for the quantification of hydrosoluble phosphorus-containing compounds in coral host tissues and cultured zooxanthellae.

(31)P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) was assessed to investigate the phosphorus-containing compounds present in the tissues of the scleractinian coral Stylophora pistillata as well as of cultured zooxanthellae (CZ). Results showed that phosphorus-containing compounds observed in CZ were mainly phosphate and phosphate esters. Phosphate accounted for 19 ± 2% of the total phosphorus compounds observed in CZ maintained under low P-levels (0.02 μM). Adding 5 mM of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (KH2PO4) to the CZ culture medium led to a 3.1-fold increase in intracellular phosphate, while adding 5

Mineral UV filters and their effects on Pocillopora damicornis metabolome.

The rising use of sunscreens and cosmetics containing ultraviolet (UV) filters has increased their presence in marine ecosystems. UV filters encompass a wide range of organic and mineral compounds with diverse behaviors and properties in aquatic environments. The mineral filters titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) are commonly found in cosmetic products as particles or nanoparticles (NPs) and are increasingly used as alternatives to organic UV filters. In this study, the effects of a coated form of TiO2 (Solaveil™ XTP1, 60 nm, hydrophobic) and uncoated ZnO particles from two different

Light-driven phenotypic plasticity in the depth-generalist coral, Pavona varians.

Climate change is causing shifts in the spatial distribution of species and a reshuffling of the composition of multiple community types. On coral reefs, deep water can act as both refuges and refugia for corals from the combined negative effects of heat and light stress. Phenotypically plastic generalists that can tolerate both low and high light environments could be disproportionately important on future reefs, persisting in refugia and colonizing vacant shallow reefs. We performed a common garden experiment to investigate the effect of light on three different wild-collected genotypes of t

Characterization of anthropogenic marine macro-debris affecting coral habitat in the highly urbanized seascape of Mumbai megacity.

Marine debris has become a major form of pollution and a serious ecosystem health concern. The present study evaluates the accumulation, origin, and fate of debris in intertidal coral habitats of Mumbai-one of the world's highly populated coastal cities on the west coast of India. Predominantly, seven hermatypic coral species belonging to seven genera and five families were identified and mainly represented by Pseudosidastrea, Porites, and Bernardpora. In terms of number, the mean density of marine debris was 1.60 ± 0.13 SE items/m2, which is higher than the global average. The mean density of

The effects of marine heatwaves on a coral reef snapper: insights into aerobic and anaerobic physiology and recovery.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are increasing in frequency and intensity. Coral reefs are particularly susceptible to MHWs, which cause mass coral bleaching and mortality. However, little is known about how MHWs affect coral reef fishes. Here, we investigated how MHWs affect the physiology of a coral reef mesopredator, Lutjanus carponotatus. Specifically, we exposed mature adults to two different MHW intensities, +1°C (29.5°C) and + 2°C (30.5°C) and measured physiological performance at 2 and 4 weeks of exposure and at 2 weeks post-exposure. At these time points, we measured oxygen consumption at res

Ammonium supply represses iron limitation to support Symbiodiniaceae growth.

Nutrient exchanges promote the success of symbioses among reef-building corals, endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Family: Symbiodiniaceae), and their microbial symbionts. Nutrient dynamics has considerable implications on the metabolism and proliferation of the coral holobiont, with nutrient limitation known to increase the susceptibility of corals to bleaching by disrupting the host-symbiont nutrient exchange. This study examines how two Symbiodiniaceae species, Symbiodinium microadriaticum RT 362 and Cladocopium goreaui RT 152, respond to varying iron (Fe) availability, nitrate (NO3 -), and amm

Isolation of Vibrio alginolyticus from seawater aquaria.

The seawater bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus was detected in 5 of 20 water samples from seawater aquaria (from 3 of 5 units) and also from the surface of diseased stony corals. A total of 45 isolates were differentiated biochemically, of which 13 isolates (29%) proved to be V. alginolyticus. All those strains produced the virulence factors caseinase and lipase, 11 strains amylase and gelatinase. 7 strains showed lecithinase activity and 2 strains produced hemolysins. All examined strains showed a marked toxicity to vero cells proven by the MTT-bioassay, but no toxicity to plant cells with the s

Multidimensional risk assessment of marine litter pollution in the ecologically fragile coral atolls of India.

Marine litter (ML), predominantly plastic, threatens oceanic biodiversity and ecosystem functioning globally. However, limited knowledge exists about its impact on India's coastal areas, particularly the Lakshadweep Islands, the nation's sole coral atolls. Within this frame of reference, the present study comprehensively investigated the distribution, abundance, typology, and ecological risks associated with ML across 28 beaches and three lagoon reef stations on Kavaratti Island. A total of 32,710 litter items, divided into 11 categories, were found with an average litter density of 0.82 ± 0.8

Conserved HSP60 structure with lineage- and context-specific regulation in cnidarians.

Heat shock proteins safeguard proteostasis under stress. We examined mitochondrial chaperonin HSP60 in three cnidarians to assess stress responses. We evaluated HSP60 expression in Pocillopora acuta (hard coral), Exaiptasia diaphana (sea anemone), and Cassiopea xamachana (upside-down jellyfish) using immunoblotting. In P. acuta, HSP60 was not detected at the fragment level under either control (25°C) or heat-stress (30°C). In contrast, isolated cells showed transient HSP60 expression under both temperature conditions, indicating context-dependent regulation in coral. E. diaphana and C. xamacha

Fine-scale geographic risk assessment of oxybenzone sunscreen pollution within Hanauma Bay using hydrodynamic characterization and modeling.

Hanauma Bay's coral reef system is threatened by sunscreen pollution. Understanding the hydrodynamic nature of the bay is crucial for understanding the transport and fate of pollutants within the bay. This study conducted a comprehensive hydrodynamic analysis, revealing significant aspects of current patterns and their influence on sunscreen pollutant behavior. The analysis demonstrated the formation of flows that drive currents parallel to the shoreline, resulting in increased pollutant retention time over sensitive reef areas. Direct flushing currents were identified as playing a role in red
