How to do it - Endovascular solutions for the renovisceral segment in coral reef aortas.

Background: Coral reef atherosclerosis of the renovisceral aorta leads to end-organ and extremity malperfusion due to ischaemia and/or embolic events. Those mostly female patients typically present with renovascular hypertension, chronic mesenteric ischaemia, and symmetric peripheral artery disease of all stages, including critical limb ischaemia. Mortality and morbidity are high in open surgery. Materials and methods: Here we describe step by step the individually designed endovascular solutions with multiple arterial accesses using stentgrafts and open stents in 8 consecutive patients. Novel use of intravascular lithotripsy for coral reef aorta: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare disease of extreme calcification in the juxtarenal aorta. These heavily calcified exophytic plaques grow into the lumen and can cause significant stenoses, leading to visceral ischaemia, renovascular hypertension, and claudication. Surgery or percutaneous intervention with stenting carries a high risk of complications and mortality. CASE SUMMARY: A 67-year-old female had presented with severe hypertension and exercise limiting claudication for 18 months. On evaluation, she was found to have severe bilateral renal artery stenoses with juxtarenal

Coral and Seawater Metagenomes Reveal Key Microbial Functions to Coral Health and Ecosystem Functioning Shaped at Reef Scale.

The coral holobiont is comprised of a highly diverse microbial community that provides key services to corals such as protection against pathogens and nutrient cycling. The coral surface mucus layer (SML) microbiome is very sensitive to external changes, as it constitutes the direct interface between the coral host and the environment. Here, we investigate whether the bacterial taxonomic and functional profiles in the coral SML are shaped by the local reef zone and explore their role in coral health and ecosystem functioning. The analysis was conducted using metagenomes and metagenome-assemble

NASCI case of the month: coral reef thoracic aorta and subclavian artery.

Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare and severe form of atherosclerotic disease, marked by dense, irregular calcifications that project into the aortic lumen [1]. CRA exhibits an exophytic growth pattern, resulting in pronounced intraluminal obstruction [2]. Mechanisms of CRA are not understood; however, extent of calcification is usually out of proportion to atherosclerosis and probably related to abnormal calcium metabolism and systemic inflammatory state [1]. CRA more commonly affects women, presents with symptoms related to vascular compromise, is often found in the suprarenal and juxtarenal s

A Rare Cause of Severe Aortic Coarctation in an Adolescent: Coral Reef Aorta.

Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare, calcified aortic lesion observed primarily in adults and elderly patients. This condition can lead to resistant hypertension and impaired organ perfusion. Although surgical treatment remains the predominant approach, endovascular intervention is emerging as an alternative for suitable cases. We present a 16-year-old male patient with a history of kidney transplantation who was admitted due to hypertension. Imaging revealed severe stenosis at the isthmus level caused by a calcific lesion characteristic of CRA. Given the complexity of the lesion and the surgical

Skeleton-Forming Responses of Reef-Building Corals under Ocean Acidification.

Ocean acidification is becoming more prevalent and may contribute to coral reef degradation, yet our understanding of its role in global reef decline remains limited. Therefore, there is an urgent need to study the impact of reduced pH levels on the growth patterns of major reef-building corals. Here, we studied the skeleton-forming strategies of 4 widely distributed coral species in a simulated acidified habitat with a pH of 7.6 to 7.8. We reconstructed and visualized the skeleton-forming process, quantified elemental calcium loss, and determined gene expression changes. The results suggest t

Tibial Plafond Fracture Healing in Coral Reef Aorta - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Orf disease, or Ecthyma contagiosum, is a zoonotic skin infection caused by the orf virus. The orf virus belongs to the family parapoxvirus and is commonly seen in sheep, goats, and deer. Transmission to humans is most commonly caused by direct contact with infected animals or fomites. Septic arthritis is a serious orthopaedic condition that requires prompt identification and early medical treatment. Septic arthritis is often precipitated by bacteremia, which allows for hematogenous spread of the bacterial load to the affected joint. Without prompt effective treatment, septic art

Trapdoor endarterectomy for coral reef plaque of the paravisceral aorta in the modern era.

Coral reef atherosclerosis of the paravisceral aorta is a rare disease whose description is confined to before contemporary vascular surgical techniques. This study aims to describe the characteristics and outcomes of patients with coral reef aorta treated with trapdoor endarterectomy at a single high-volume quaternary referral center since 2010. From 2010 to 2022, 14 patients with coral reef aorta were treated with trapdoor endarterectomy. The patient data were obtained via a retrospective medical record review. The patients were predominantly women (79%) with a median age of 65 years (interq

Parrotfish predation drives distinct microbial communities in reef-building corals.

BACKGROUND: Coral-associated microbial communities are sensitive to multiple environmental and biotic stressors that can lead to dysbiosis and mortality. Although the processes contributing to these microbial shifts remain inadequately understood, a number of potential mechanisms have been identified. For example, predation by various corallivore species, including ecologically-important taxa such as parrotfishes, may disrupt coral microbiomes via bite-induced transmission and/or enrichment of potentially opportunistic bacteria. Here, we used a combination of mesocosm experiments and field-bas

Decision analysis to support wastewater management in coral reef priority area.

A cocktail of land-based sources of pollution threatens coral reef ecosystems, and addressing these has become a key management and policy challenge in the State of Hawai'i, other US territories, and globally. In West Maui, Hawai'i, nearly one quarter of all living corals were lost between 1995 and 2008. Onsite disposal systems (OSDS) for sewage leak contaminants into drinking water sources and nearshore waters. In recognition of this risk, the Hawai'i State Department of Health (DOH) is prioritizing areas for cesspool upgrades. Independently, we applied a decision analysis process to identify

Treatment of symptomatic coral reef aorta by a nitinol self-expanding stent.

Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare condition, characterised by rock-hard calcification of the juxta-renal and supra-renal aorta with luminal encroachment causing significant stenosis of the aorta and its branches. It usually presents as resistant hypertension, renal dysfunction, mesenteric ischaemia, limb claudication or embolic manifestations. Although surgical thrombo-endarterectomy along with bypass graft to the affected visceral arteries remains the cornerstone of treatment, it is associated with considerable mortality and morbidity, especially in patients with pre-existing comorbidities. The Crown-of-Thorns Starfish: From Coral Reef Plague to Model System.

Acanthaster planci, commonly known as the "crown-of-thorns starfish" (COTS) are famous for decimating coral reefs, yet the unique features of the COTS genome make the starfish a useful system for genomic and evolutionary developmental research. The COTS genome assembly is an order of magnitude more highly contiguous than other recently sequenced echinoderm genome assemblies. The high resolution of the COTS assembly is likely related to low heterozygosity resulting from historical population dynamics and possibly a recent population expansion. The high-resolution genome assembly is biologically

Synergistic effects of algal overgrowth and corallivory on Caribbean reef-building corals.

Indirect biotic interactions play a crucial role in structuring ecological communities, but many of these interactions have not been explored. Algal competition and corallivory are two major stressors contributing to the decline of coral reefs. Here, we provide the first evidence of algal-induced corallivory and synergistic effects between the two stressors on corals. When corals (Montastraeafaveolata) were placed in contact with algae (Halimeda opuntia) together with corallivorous fireworms (Hermodice carunculata) in aquaria, corals suffered high tissue mortality. This mortality was reduced i

Ocean acidification causes bleaching and productivity loss in coral reef builders.

Ocean acidification represents a key threat to coral reefs by reducing the calcification rate of framework builders. In addition, acidification is likely to affect the relationship between corals and their symbiotic dinoflagellates and the productivity of this association. However, little is known about how acidification impacts on the physiology of reef builders and how acidification interacts with warming. Here, we report on an 8-week study that compared bleaching, productivity, and calcification responses of crustose coralline algae (CCA) and branching (Acropora) and massive (Porites) coral

Thalassomonas loyana sp. nov., a causative agent of the white plague-like disease of corals on the Eilat coral reef.

The taxonomic position of the coral pathogen strain CBMAI 722T was determined on the basis of molecular and phenotypic data. We clearly show that the novel isolate CBMAI 722 T is a member of the family Colwelliaceae, with Thalassomonas ganghwensis as the nearest neighbour (95 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). CBMAI 722T can be differentiated from its nearest neighbour on the basis of phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, including the utilization of cellobiose and L-arginine, the production of alginase and amylase, but not oxidase, and the presence of the fatty acids 12:0 3-OH and 14:0,

Benthic Community Composition of Coral Reefs Is Associated with the Time Since Last Blast Fishing Event.

Blast fishing is a widespread destructive practice that has long-term negative impacts on coral reef ecosystems. To better understand the long-term impact of blast fishing on these ecosystems within Southern Tanzania, in situ surveys were undertaken within a two-year timeframe across six reef sites in Mikindani Bay. These sites varied in the time since blast fishing was last undertaken (<5 years, 5-10 years, or >10 years). While there were limited differences in major benthic categories (soft substrate, algae, and hard coral), multivariate benthic community mix varied significantly with the ti

A new temporary fish parasitic gnathiid isopod, Elaphognathia alcalai (Crustacea: Isopoda: Gnathiidae), from Philippine coral reefs.

Gnathiid isopods are the most prevalent and ecologically important temporary ectoparasites of coral reef fishes and are important for supporting the functional integrity of coral reefs. Through their role as parasites, gnathiids can influence community dynamics in their ecosystem. The family Gnathiidae constitutes 12 genera, including the genus Elaphognathia that can be distinguished from other genera by the deeply excavated frontal border, dramatic lengthening of the mandibles, and addition of apical cusps in adult males. There are currently 25 known species of Elaphognathia described over a
