Brain neural synchronization and functional coupling in Alzheimer's disease as revealed by resting state EEG rhythms.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of neurodegenerative disorder, typically causing dementia along aging. AD is mainly characterized by a pathological extracellular accumulation of amyloid-beta peptides that affects excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission, inducing aberrant patterns in neuronal circuits. Growing evidence shows that AD targets cortical neuronal networks related to cognitive functions including episodic memory and visuospatial attention. This is partially reflected by the abnormal mechanisms of cortical neural synchronization and coupling that generate rest

GABAergic Modulation in Movement Related Oscillatory Activity: A Review of the Effect Pharmacologically and with Aging.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a ubiquitous inhibitory neurotransmitter critical to the control of movement both cortically and subcortically. Modulation of GABA can alter the characteristic rest as well as movement-related oscillatory activity in the alpha (8-12 Hz), beta (13-30 Hz, and gamma (60-90 Hz) frequencies, but the specific mechanisms by which GABAergic modulation can modify these well-described changes remains unclear. Through pharmacologic GABAergic modulation and evaluation across the age spectrum, the contributions of GABA to these characteristic oscillatory activities are beg

[Absence attacks with secondary bilateral synchrony].

Three cases with petit mal absence attacks with secondary bilateral synchrony were presented. The interictal EEG showed unilateral focal epileptic discharges in the frontal area with normal background activity. The ictal EEG disclosed 3-Hz generalized symmetrical spike-wave patterns preceded by unilateral focal discharges, which were elicited by hyperventilation. None of the three cases had abnormal neurological findings or abnormal CT findings. All three cases had normal psychomotor development. One case had a history of febrile convulsions. The ictal manifestations were as follows; impaireme

Preoperative Detection of Subtle Focal Cortical Dysplasia in Children by Combined Arterial Spin Labeling, Voxel-Based Morphometry, Electroencephalography-Synchronized Functional MRI, Resting-State Regional Homogeneity, and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) causes drug-resistant epilepsy in children that can be cured surgically, but the lesions are often unseen by imaging. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficiency of arterial spin labeling (ASL), voxel-based-morphometry (VBM), fMRI electroencephalography (EEG), resting-state regional homogeneity (ReHo), 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET), and their combination in detecting pediatric FCD. METHODS: We prospectively included 10 children for whom FCD was localized by surgical resection. They underwent 3T MR acquisition with concurren

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the left dorsolateral premotor cortex (dPMC) interferes with rhythm reproduction.

Movement timing in the sub-second range engages a brain network comprising cortical and sub-cortical areas. The present study aims at investigating the functional significance of the left dorsolateral premotor cortex (dPMC) for precise movement timing as determined by sensorimotor synchronization and rhythm reproduction. To this end, 18 healthy volunteers performed an auditorily paced synchronization-continuation task with the right hand. A simple reaction time task served as control condition. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was applied over the left dPMC in order to modulate c

Cortical temporal integration can account for limits of temporal perception: investigations in the binaural system.

The auditory system has exquisite temporal coding in the periphery which is transformed into a rate-based code in central auditory structures, like auditory cortex. However, the cortex is still able to synchronize, albeit at lower modulation rates, to acoustic fluctuations. The perceptual significance of this cortical synchronization is unknown. We estimated physiological synchronization limits of cortex (in humans with electroencephalography) and brainstem neurons (in chinchillas) to dynamic binaural cues using a novel system-identification technique, along with parallel perceptual measuremen

Effects of working memory load on oscillatory power in human intracranial EEG.

Studies of working memory load effects on human EEG power have indicated divergent effects in different frequency bands. Although gamma power typically increases with load, the load dependency of the lower frequency theta and alpha bands is uncertain. We obtained intracranial electroencephalography measurements from 1453 electrode sites in 14 epilepsy patients performing a Sternberg task, in order to characterize the anatomical distribution of load-related changes across the frequency spectrum. Gamma power increases occurred throughout the brain, but were most common in the occipital lobe. In

[Melatonin in humans: a biochemical marker of the circadian clock and an endogenous synchronizer].

Melatonin (MLT) is a methoxyindole secreted principally by the pineal gland. It is synthesized at night under normal environmental conditions. The endogenous rhythm of secretion is generated by the suprachiasmatic nuclei and activated by the light/dark cycle. Light is able to both suppress or activate melatonin production on the light schedule. The nycthohemeral rhythm of this hormone can be determined by repeated measurements of plasma or saliva MLT or urine sulfatoxy-MLT, the main hepatic metabolite. Melatonin can be considered as the output (the hand) of the endogenous clock. Since the regu

[The spatial synchronization of the potentials in the background and evoked ECoG of a neuronally isolated strip of rabbit cortex].

Conditions of formation of potentials' spatial synchronization in the neuronally isolated cortical slab were studied in anaesthetized rabbits in acute experiments. Cortical potentials in all recording points of the slab were similar to each other. Seizure potentials induced by electrical stimulation spread over the slab and became synchronous in all points of recording. The neuronal division of the slab in two parts did not lead to a disturbance of initial synchronization of the background potentials in the isolated parts of the slab, while seizure potentials after electrical stimulation sprea

Source analysis of beta-synchronisation and cortico-muscular coherence after movement termination based on high resolution electroencephalography.

We hypothesized that post-movement beta synchronization (PMBS) and cortico-muscular coherence (CMC) during movement termination relate to each other and have similar role in sensorimotor integration. We calculated the parameters and estimated the sources of these phenomena. We measured 64-channel EEG simultaneously with surface EMG of the right first dorsal interosseus muscle in 11 healthy volunteers. In Task1, subjects kept a medium-strength contraction continuously; in Task2, superimposed on this movement, they performed repetitive self-paced short contractions. In Task3 short contractions we

Motor cortex synchronization influences the rhythm of motor performance in premanifest huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: In Huntington's disease there is evidence of structural damage in the motor system, but it is still unclear how to link this to the behavioral disorder of movement. One feature of choreic movement is variable timing and coordination between sequences of actions. We postulate this results from desynchronization of neural activity in cortical motor areas. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to explore the ability to synchronize activity in a motor network using transcranial magnetic stimulation and to relate this to timing of motor performance. METHODS: We examined synchron

Sensitization, epileptic-like symptoms and local synchronization in patients with paranoid schizophrenia.

Recent findings indicate that changes in synchronization of neural activities underlying sensitization and kindling could be more comprehensively understood using nonlinear methods. With this aim we have examined local synchronization using novel measure of coarse-grained information rate (CIR) in 8 EEG signals recorded at different cortical areas in 44 patients with paranoid schizophrenia. The values of local synchronization that could reflect sensitization related changes in EEG activities of cortical sites were then related to psychometric measures of epileptic-like symptoms and positive an

Basal ganglia impairments in autism spectrum disorder are related to abnormal signal gating to prefrontal cortex.

Research on the biological basis of autism spectrum disorder has yielded a list of brain abnormalities that are arguably as diverse as the set of behavioral symptoms that characterize the disorder. Among these are patterns of abnormal cortical connectivity and abnormal basal ganglia development. In attempts to integrate the existing literature, the current paper tests the hypothesis that impairments in the basal ganglia's function to flexibly select and route task-relevant neural signals to the prefrontal cortex underpins patterns of abnormal synchronization between the prefrontal cortex and o

Procedural learning and retention of audio-verbal temporal sequence is altered in children with developmental coordination disorder but cortical thickness matters.

Rhythmic abilities are impaired in developmental coordination disorder (DCD) but learning deficit of procedural skills implying temporal sequence is still unclear. Current contradictory results suggest that procedural learning deficits in DCD highly depend on learning conditions. The present study proposes to test the role of sensory modality of stimulations (visual or auditory) on synchronization, learning, and retention of temporal verbal sequences in children with and without DCD. We postulated a deficit in learning particularly with auditory stimulations, in association with atypical corti

Groove strength is associated with cortical β suppression and tapping stability.

Groove-the pleasurable urge to move in response to rhythmic music-is known to engage motor planning networks in the brain, and β band oscillations over motor cortex correlate with groove strength during passive listening. Whether this groove-related β modulation extends to active sensorimotor synchronization, and whether it tracks behavioral synchronization performance, remains an open question. Here we tested whether groove ratings are associated with motor cortical β suppression and tapping stability during active synchronization and after auditory input ceases. Twenty-eight healthy adults t

The role of individual neuron ion conductances in the synchronization processes of neuron networks.

The partial phase synchronization (sometimes called cooperation) of neurons is fundamental for the understanding of the complex behavior of the brain. The lack or the excess of synchronization can generate brain disorders like Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. The phase synchronization phenomenon is strongly related to the regular or chaotic dynamics of individual neurons. The individual dynamics themselves are a function of the ion channel conductances, turning the conductances into important players in the process of neuron synchronized health depolarization/repolarization processes. It is w

The timing of theta phase synchronization accords with vigilant attention.

Vigilant attention plays an important role in some industries and everyday life. However, its mechanism relating to phase synchronization of cortical oscillations is still unknown, which hinders the development of predicting and preventing vigilant attentional deficit. This study utilized psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) to elicit vigilance decrement. High and low levels of vigilant attention were represented by short and long reaction time, respectively. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was collected and phase synchronization between prefrontal and parietal cortices was analyzed by using debiased w

How to target inter-regional phase synchronization with dual-site Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation.

Large-scale synchronization of neural oscillations is a key mechanism for functional information exchange among brain areas. Dual-site Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (ds-TACS) has been recently introduced as non-invasive technique to manipulate the temporal phase relationship of local oscillations in two connected cortical areas. While the frequency of ds-TACS is matched, the phase of stimulation is either identical (in-phase stimulation) or opposite (anti-phase stimulation) in the two cortical target areas. In-phase stimulation is thought to synchronize the endogenous oscillatio

The diagnostic value of clinical EEG in detecting abnormal synchronicity in panic disorder.

Electroencephalographic (EEG) findings repeatedly reported abnormal synchronous or even epileptiform discharges in panic disorder. Although less frequently occurring in patients with panic disorder, these deviant EEG features during panic attacks were also observed in intracranial EEG. For this purpose, our article reviews the consideration of abnormal synchronous neuronal activity in different neurocircuits, particularly limbic, as a suggested condition of panic attacks. Therapeutic approaches of anticonvulsants have shown reductions of symptoms and frequency of attacks in numerous patients s

[Effect of neuroleptics on the epileptic process].

Using the parameters of the special synchronization of cortical biopotentials, the authors studied changes in the function of the cerebral cortex in patients with the generalized form of epilepsy with a further progression of the disease and under the effect of the typical neuroleptic haloperidol and atypical neuroleptic clozapine. These drugs have been found to act differently on the epileptic process and on the effects of the hyperventilation test, which appears to be due to their differing ability to block receptors of the nigrostriatal and mesolimbic dopaminergic systems. The data have sho
