MAPK involvement in cytokine production in response to Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection.

BACKGROUND: Caseous lymphadenitis (CL) is a contagious infectious disease of small ruminants caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Is characterized by the formation of abscesses in the lymph nodes and intestines of infected animals, induced by inflammatory cytokines. The production of cytokines, such as IL-10, TNF-α, IL-4 and IFN-γ, is regulated by mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway activation. The present study investigated the involvement of MAPK pathways (MAPK p38, ERK 1 and ERK 2) with respect to the production of cytokines induced by antigens secreted by C. pseudotube

[Parietal calcifications of the kidney pelvis in Corynebacterium urealyticum urinary infection].

Linear renal pelvis calcifications in a native kidney due to Corynebacterium urealyticum are described. These micro-organisms have an opportunistic behaviour and can be responsible for nosocomial urinary tract infection. Alkaline incrusted cystitis with linear vesical calcifications are considered as the most typical pattern. Renal pelvis may also be concerned, with parietal calcifications.

[Whole cell protein profiling characterization of Corynebacterium diphtheriae clinical isolates collected from various infections].

INTRODUCTION: Corynebacterium diphtheriae can cause various infections such as diphtheria, wound infections, septic arthritis, bacteraemia and endocarditis. Different virulence properties of the isolates might be related to different virulence factors expressed by the isolates. The objective of this study was to explore whether whole cell protein profiling might be useful in prediction of pathogenic properties of C. diphtheriae isolates. METHODS: C. disphtheriae isolates collected from diphtheria, invasive and local infections and from asymptomatic carriers in Poland, France, New Caledonia an

Corynebacterium urealyticum urinary tract infection in a cat with urethral obstruction.

Corynebacterium urealyticum is an uncommon cause of urinary tract infections in cats. However, it is difficult to diagnose and if left untreated it may result in irreversible bladder lesions. C urealyticum is a multiantibiotic-resistant bacterium whose culture requires special care. Risk factors for the occurrence of this infection include urological procedures, foreign bodies, bladder mucosa abnormalities, immuno-suppressed states and antibiotic treatment. This report describes an unusual case of C urealyticum urinary infection in a young cat with pre-existing urethral obstruction. C urealyti

Effects of Corynebacterium bovis infection on susceptibility to major mastitis pathogens.

Experimental challenge procedures were used to study infectivity and virulence of Corynebacterium bovis. Challenge procedures using Staphylococcus aureus (Newbould 305) and Streptococcus agalactiae (McDonald 44) were used to study effects of Corynebacterium bovis infections on superinfection with major pathogens. Rate of infection under experimental challenge conditions was significantly greater with Corynebacterium bovis than previously observed for Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus agalactiae. Principal location of Corynebacterium bovis colonization appeared to the teat canal region, al

Corynebacterium Species Inhibit Streptococcus pneumoniae Colonization and Infection of the Mouse Airway.

The stability and composition of the airway microbiome is an important determinant of respiratory health. Some airway bacteria are considered to be beneficial due to their potential to impede the acquisition and persistence of opportunistic bacterial pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. Among such organisms, the presence of Corynebacterium species correlates with reduced S. pneumoniae in both adults and children, in whom Corynebacterium abundance is predictive of S. pneumoniae infection risk. Previously, Corynebacterium accolens was shown to express a lipase which cleaves host lipids, r

Infective Endocarditis Due to Corynebacterium Species: Clinical Features and Antibiotic Resistance.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium species are often dismissed as contaminants in blood cultures, but they can also cause infective endocarditis (IE), which is a severe condition. Antibiotic resistance of corynebacteria is increasing making treatment challenging. Reports on IE caused by Corynebacterium species are scarce and more knowledge is needed. METHODS: Cases of IE caused by Corynebacterium species were identified through the Swedish Registry of Infective Endocarditis. Isolates were collected for species redetermination by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight and for anti

Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii as a pathogen of a Jones tube infection following conjunctivo-dacryocystorhinostomy.

A 35-year-old woman complained of an unpleasant odor for a few days after a change in foundation cream. The patient had previously undergone conjunctivo-dacryocystorhinostomy with a Jones tube fixed with non-absorbable suture. Slit-lamp examination revealed an orange-colored discharge in the tube. A culture test of the discharge showed Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii (1+), Aspergillus versicolor (1+), and Mycobacterium chelonae (1+). After medical treatment and suture removal, the discharge completely disappeared. This is the first reported case of a Jones tube infection following conjunctivo-d

Rare human skin infection with Corynebacterium ulcerans: transmission by a domestic cat.

Corynebacterium ulcerans is mainly known for its ability to cause animal infections. Some strains of C. ulcerans produce diphtheria toxin, which can cause life-threatening cardiopathies and neuropathies in humans. Human cutaneous C. ulcerans infection is a very rare disease that mimics classical cutaneous diphtheria. We present a very rare case of a C. ulcerans skin infection caused by a non-diphtheria toxin-producing strain of C. ulcerans that resolved after 3 weeks of therapy with amoxicillin-clavulanate. A pet cat was the probable source of infection. The presence of C. ulcerans in the mout

Corynebacterium urealyticum infection in a pediatric kidney transplant recipient: case report.

The incidence of Corynebacterium urealyticum infection in kidney recipients is low. Its common clinical manifestation is encrusted cystitis or encrusted pyelitis. Herein, we report an unusual case of a 19-year-old kidney recipient with necrotizing pyelitis due to C urealyticum in the absence of mucosal encrustation or calculi. The patient was readmitted 30 days posttransplantation to remove a stent. Cystoscopy demonstrated a normal vesical wall without encrustation. The stent was removed without problems. Culture yielded negative findings. That night, the patient had fever and hematuria. Thera
