Societal costs of ovarian cancer in a population-based cohort - a cost of illness analysis.

BACKGROUND: The societal cost associated with ovarian cancer (OC) is not well known. Increasing costs for new treatments and/or the impact of organizational changes motivates these costs to be described and communicated. This study aims to evaluate the cost of illness of OC in a population-based cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients diagnosed with ovarian, fallopian tube, primary peritoneal cancer, and serous cancer of undesignated primary site (UPS) in 2011-2012 were followed for six years. Direct costs, i.e., costs for health care expenditures, were gathered from the regional healthcar

Methylmercury contamination in Mediterranean seafood: Exposure assessment and cost of illness implications.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a widespread contaminant that bioaccumulates in marine food webs, including those in the Mediterranean sea. It poses serious health risks, especially to developing infants and children, where exposure can cause neurological damage and developmental delays. In addition to health concerns, high MeHg levels in seafood can lead to economic losses through cognitive impairments that reduce productivity. Despite seafood being a dietary staple in Mediterranean countries, the full extent of MeHg's health and economic impacts remains underexplored, especially with the rising inte

Direct Medical Cost of Hospitalization for Acute Stroke in Lebanon: A Prospective Incidence-Based Multicenter Cost-of-Illness Study.

Stroke is a major social and health problem posing heavy burden on national economies. We provided detailed financial data on the direct in-hospital cost of acute stroke care in Lebanon and evaluated its drivers. This was an observational, quantitative, prospective, multicenter, incidence-based, bottom-up cost-of-illness study. Medical and billing records of stroke patients admitted to 8 hospitals in Beirut over 1 year were analyzed. Direct medical costs were calculated, and cost drivers were assessed using a multivariable linear regression analysis. In total, 203 stroke patients were included

The economic burden of stroke: a systematic review of cost of illness studies.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. As the number of stroke cases is rising from one year to another, policymakers require data on the amount spent on stroke to enforce better financing policies for prevention, hospital care, outpatient rehabilitation services and social services. We aimed to systematically assess the economic burden of stroke at global level. Cost of stroke studies were retrieved from five databases. We retrieved the average cost per patient, where specified, or estimated it using a top-down approach. Resulting costs were grouped in two m

Cost analysis of hospital-based symptomatic uterine fibroids in the kingdom of Eswatini: A prevalence-based cost-of-illness study.

BACKGROUND: Uterine fibroids are common benign tumours of uterine smooth muscle. It has been established that uterine fibroids cause a marked global financial burden on healthcare systems and society; however, significant gaps exist in the knowledge of costs related to uterine fibroids. This study aimed to estimate costs associated with the diagnosis, care, and management of uterine fibroids in Eswatini. METHODS: The study employed the Cost of Illness (COI) method, a retrospective prevalence cost model. The provider's perspective was used to estimate all identifiable direct medical costs of U

Cost-of-illness of cholera to households and health facilities in rural Malawi.

Cholera remains an important public health problem in many low- and middle-income countries. Vaccination has been recommended as a possible intervention for the prevention and control of cholera. Evidence, especially data on disease burden, cost-of-illness, delivery costs and cost-effectiveness to support a wider use of vaccine is still weak. This study aims at estimating the cost-of-illness of cholera to households and health facilities in Machinga and Zomba Districts, Malawi. A cross-sectional study using retrospectively collected cost data was undertaken in this investigation. One hundred p

A pilot cost-of-illness study on long-term complications/sequelae of AOM.

OBJECTIVES: Acute otitis media (AOM) commonly affects young children and occasionally results in serious complications/sequelae. This pilot cost-of-illness study aimed to assess the economic burden of long-term AOM complications/sequelae in Belgium, and to establish a thorough methodology for a larger study. METHODOLOGY: We retrospectively reviewed charts of patients aged 10-20 years with long-term complications/sequelae considered to be AOM-related, and > or = 8 years of follow-up. From a list of 215 eligible patients, we selected 25 patients representing each of seven categories of complica

Economic burden of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis in Uganda: a cost-of-illness analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (rVVC) affects 6-9% of women worldwide, yet its economic impact in resource-limited settings remains poorly understood. This study estimated the economic burden of rVVC in Uganda from a societal perspective. METHODS: We used a cost-of-illness framework using secondary data sources. We modeled the rVVC prevalence by adjusting for three major epidemiologic risk factors: HIV infection, hormonal contraceptive use, and broad-spectrum antibiotic exposure. Direct medical costs were calculated using Uganda's health care system pricing, whereas indirect c

Costs of illness due to cholera, costs of immunization and cost-effectiveness of an oral cholera mass vaccination campaign in Zanzibar.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends oral cholera vaccines (OCVs) as a supplementary tool to conventional prevention of cholera. Dukoral, a killed whole-cell two-dose OCV, was used in a mass vaccination campaign in 2009 in Zanzibar. Public and private costs of illness (COI) due to endemic cholera and costs of the mass vaccination campaign were estimated to assess the cost-effectiveness of OCV for this particular campaign from both the health care provider and the societal perspective. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Public and private COI were obtained from interviews wi
