Convergent olfactory circuits for courtship in Drosophila revealed by the circuit-tracing tool ds-Tango.

Animals exhibit sex-specific behaviors that are governed by sexually dimorphic circuits. One such behavior in male Drosophila melanogaster, courtship, is regulated by various sensory modalities, including olfaction. Here, we reveal how sexually dimorphic olfactory pathways in male flies converge onto lateral horn output neurons, third-order neurons in the olfactory circuit, to regulate courtship. To achieve this, we developed ds-Tango, a modified version of the monosynaptic tracing and manipulation tool trans-Tango. In ds-Tango, two distinct configurations of trans-Tango are positioned in seri

fruitless is sex-differentially spliced and is important for the courtship behavior and development of silkmoth Bombyx mori.

Sexual dimorphisms of the brain play essential roles in successful reproduction. Silkmoth Bombyx mori exhibits extensive sexual differences in sexual behavior, as well as their morphology. Although the neural circuits that transmit information about sex pheromone in the male brain are extensively analyzed, the molecular mechanisms that regulate their development are still elusive. In the present study, we focused on the silkmoth ortholog of fruitless (fru) as a candidate gene that regulates sexual dimorphisms of the brain. fru transcripts were expressed from multiple promoters in various tissu

Social dominance and courtship and mating behaviour in rams in non-competitive and competitive pen tests.

A group of 19 Merino rams was used to determine: (i) if body weight, age and testis characteristics are different between high (HR) and low-ranked (LR) rams, and (ii) how the competition between HR and LR rams for oestrous ewes affect their courtship and mating behaviour. Hierarchy was determined using the food competition test. The five first and five last ranked rams were individually exposed to oestrous ewes in pen tests, and the frequency of different courtship behavioural units, mounts and mates, and the time from test onset to each mate was recorded. The sexual behaviour of the five firs

Analysis of a complex vertical copulatory-courtship display in the yellow fever vector Sabethes chloropterus.

Sabethes chloropterus (Von Humboldt) (Diptera: Culicidae), an arboreal mosquito vector of the yellow fever virus, perches on vertical surfaces, where airborne males patrol for potential mates and mating occurs. Laboratory analysis of 26 virgin mating pairs partly confirms and greatly extends an earlier description suggesting that males perform a courtship ritual. A male approaches a female by hovering behind her, moving toward her from one side, reaching toward her and occasionally touching her with his closest midleg, and eventually seizing her wing with that midleg and inverting beneath her,

Mating behaviour and evidence for a female released courtship pheromone in the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus.

The mating behaviour of the signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana), has been categorised into seven distinct stages: orientation; contact; seizure; turning; mounting; spermatophore deposition; and dismounting. These categories were used in the development of a bioassay to test whether mature females release a sex pheromone during the breeding season to which males respond. Water conditioned by 1) mature females (MF water), 2) immature females (IF water) and 3) freshwater (C water), were injected through standard aquarium air-stones into tanks containing mature males. The behaviour of

Neuroecology of alcohol risk and reward: Methanol boosts pheromones and courtship success in Drosophila melanogaster.

Attraction of Drosophila melanogaster toward by-products of alcoholic fermentation, especially ethanol, has been extensively studied. Previous research has provided several interpretations of this attraction, including potential drug abuse, or a self-medicating coping strategy after mate rejection. We posit that the ecologically adaptive value of alcohol attraction has not been fully explored. Here, we assert a simple yet vital biological rationale for this alcohol preference. Flies display attraction to fruits rich in alcohol, specifically ethanol and methanol, where contact results in a rapi

Courtship and mating by the sandfly Phlebotomus duboscqi, a vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Afrotropical region.

Courtship behaviour of males of the Afrotropical sandfly Phlebotomus duboscqi Neveu-Lemaire (Diptera: Psychodidae) involved mounting the female and clasping her 'waist' with the male coxites placed between the female's thorax and abdomen. This behaviour, which we call 'piggy-backing', was preceded by male wing beating, perhaps involving mate recognition and contact pheromones. It did not seem to be pre- or postcopulatory mate guarding. Piggy-backing was attempted by P. duboscqi males on females of other species (P. papatasi and P. perniciosus) and even on other male P. duboscqi. The majority o

N-(3-methylbutyl)acetamide mediates male-male courtship in Bactrocera dorsalis through behavioral threshold modulation.

Male-male courtship, observed across diverse taxa, is often regarded as an evolutionary paradox. Here, we address this paradox by demonstrating that such behavior in the globally invasive pest Bactrocera dorsalis arises as a byproduct of a context-dependent shift in the mating filter. We identify N-(3-methylbutyl)acetamide (MBA) as a critical signal that accumulates under high male density and female scarcity. At a threshold amount (~ 1,800 ng), MBA broadens the male's mating filter, lowering the acceptance threshold for potential partners, thereby elevating courtship motivation and inducing h

Evolutionary shifts in courtship pheromone composition revealed by EST analysis of plethodontid salamander mental glands.

Courtship behavior in salamanders of the family Plethodontidae can last more than an hour. During courtship, males use stereotyped behaviors to repeatedly deliver a variety of proteinaceous pheromones to the female. These pheromones are produced and released from a specialized gland on the male's chin (the mental gland). Several pheromone components are well characterized and represented by high frequency transcripts in cDNA pools derived from plethodontid mental glands. However, evolutionary trends in the overall composition of the pheromonal signal are poorly understood. To address this issu

Preoptic transcriptomes during courtship reveal the molecular basis of behavioral coordination in a highly social cichlid.

Human and non-human animals often coordinate their behavior, a phenomenon thought to strengthen relationships by enabling sequential assessment of an interaction partner's quality as a mate or rival, a process that directly affects evolutionary fitness. There is increasing evidence that behavioral coordination is reflected by synchronized neural activity of the on interacting partners, though few studies have examined synchronization at the level of gene expression. Here, we use Burton's Mouthbrooder cichlid, Astatotilapia burtoni , to examine how neural transcriptomes are synchronized while m

Genital courtship and female-active roles in mating: sexual selection by mate choice in Caenorhabditis elegans.

A new bridge between studies of sexual selection and the massive literature on Caenorhabditis elegans behaviourand nervous system properties promise to provide important new insights into both fields. This paper shows that mate choice likely occurs in hermaphrodite C. elegans on the basis of stimulation from the male genital spicules, making it possible to apply the toolkit of extensive background knowledge of C. elegans and powerful modern techniques to test in unprecedented detail the leading hypotheses regarding one of the most sweeping trends in all of animal evolution, the especially rapi

Looking for the right mate-What we really know on the courtship and mating of Lucilia sericata (Meigen)?

Lucilia sericata is well known for causing myiasis in humans, livestock, pets and wildlife. It also vectors microbial pathogens, including paratuberculosis agents. This species can be exploited in maggot therapy to treat necrotic wounds, particularly those infected by multidrug-resistant pathogens. Despite its high medical and veterinary importance, our knowledge about its courtship and mating behavior is still limited. In this study, we quantified the courtship and mating behavior of L. sericata, shedding light on the potential impact of lateralization of selected behavioral traits during sex

Behavioral and cytogenetic analysis of the cacophony courtship song mutant and interacting genetic variants in Drosophila melanogaster.

The courtship song of a Drosophila melanogaster male consists of tone pulses interspersed with humming sounds. An X chromosomal mutation, cacophony (cac), causes the production of polycyclic pulses readily distinguishable from those in wild type, which are mono- or bicyclic. Yet, courtship hums and flight wing beats are normal in this mutant, suggesting a specific role of the cac gene in the neural program underlying one particular feature of the fly's wing vibrations. A precise cytogenetic localization of cac is presented; this was obtained by uncovering the song abnormality with deletions th

Olfactory GnRH3 crypt sensory neurons transduce sex pheromone signals to induce male courtship behavior in zebrafish.

Olfactory activation of neuroendocrine pathways plays vital roles in many organisms for reproduction and survival. The importance of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons for reproduction is well-established but little is known about whether they can directly sense and transmit sex pheromone signals. We have uncovered the migration path and distribution pattern of a new GnRH neuronal population that fulfills this role. GnRH3 neurons arise from the region located beneath olfactory placode, undergo bidirectional migration along the olfactory nerve, and cell bodies lie within the olfactor

Sexual excitation induces courtship ultrasonic vocalizations and cataplexy-like behavior in orexin neuron-ablated male mice.

Cataplexy is triggered by laughter in humans and palatable food in mice. To further evaluate mice's cataplexy, we examined courtship behavior in orexin neuron-ablated mice (ORX-AB), one of the animal models of narcolepsy/cataplexy. Wild-type female mice were placed into the home cage of male ORX-AB and cataplexy-like behavior was observed along with ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), also known as the "love song". ORX-AB with a female encounter showed cataplexy-like behavior both during the dark and light periods, whereas ORX-AB with chocolate predominantly showed it during the dark period. Duri

Fatigue resistant jaw muscles facilitate long-lasting courtship behaviour in the southern alligator lizard (Elgaria multicarinata).

The southern alligator lizard (Elgaria multicarinata) exhibits a courtship behaviour during which the male firmly grips the female's head in his jaws for many hours at a time. This extreme behaviour counters the conventional wisdom that reptilian muscle is incapable of powering high-endurance behaviours. We conducted in situ experiments in which the jaw-adductor muscles of lizards were stimulated directly while bite force was measured simultaneously. Fatigue tests were performed by stimulating the muscles with a series of tetanic trains. Our results show that a substantial sustained force grad

The influence of temperature on courtship and mate choice in a wolf spider: implications for mating success in variable environments.

The selection of animal signal form often changes significantly with the environment, yet signal form may be environment-dependent. Little is known about how variation in individual responses to changing environments affects the relationship between selection and the subsequent evolution of signal traits. To address this question, we assess the effects of variation in temperature on individual signaling and mating behavior responses across temperatures in the wolf spider Schizocosa floridana. By running repeated-measures trials, we find that temperature has predictable effects on signal form,

Species-specific genitalic copulatory courtship in sepsid flies (Diptera, Sepsidae, Microsepsis) and theories of genitalic evolution.

Males of Microsepsis eberhardi and M. armillata use their genitalic surstyli to rhythmically squeeze the female's abdomen with stereotyped movements during copulation. Squeezing movements did not begin until intromission had occurred and, contrary to predictions of the conflict-of-interest hypothesis for genitalic evolution, did not overcome morphological or behavioral female resistance. Contrary to predictions of the lock-and-key hypothesis, female morphology was uniform in the two species and could not mechanically exclude the genitalia of either species of male. The complex pattern of squee

Novel insights into courtship and mating behavior of Anastatus japonicus enhance pest control and mass-rearing efficiency.

The solitary egg endoparasitoid, Anastatus japonicus (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae), holds substantial potential for effectively controlling hemipterous and lepidopterous pests. The present study endeavors to elucidate the courtship and mating behavior of this parasitoid, as a comprehensive understanding of female and male mating status and its implications on offspring production remains inadequately documented. Courtship and mating behavior process impacted by food, age, host, body size, virgin and mated both sexes were monitored by direct observation, while fecundity and female proportion of vir

The melanin pigment gene black mediates body pigmentation and courtship behaviour in the German cockroach Blattella germanica.

Genes involved in melanin production directly impact insect pigmentation and can affect diverse physiology and behaviours. The role these genes have on sex behaviour, however, is unclear. In the present study, the crucial melanin pigment gene black was functionally characterised in an urban pest, the German cockroach, Blattella germanica. RNAi knockdown of B. germanica black (Bgblack) had no effect on survival, but did result in black pigmentation of the thoraxes, abdomens, heads, wings, legs, antennae, and cerci due to cuticular accumulation of melanin. Sex-specific variation in the pigmentat
