[Phenomenology of craving: from differentiation to adequate therapy].

The author analyzes a phenomenon of addiction from the psychological/psychiatric position and differentiates it from psychopathological disorders, including parabulia, hyperbulia, paraphylia, commonly used for the definition of drive disorders. It has been concluded that addition is a specific complex of clinical symptoms which is not similar to other drive disorders. To avoid diagnostic and therapeutic errors, the author suggests to revise definitions by assigning the biological sense to the conception of addiction within psychoactive substance dependence and sexual addiction, some forms of e

Rivastigmine reduces tobacco craving in alcohol-dependent smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Although alcohol-dependent smokers represent an important group for applying smoking interventions, a sufficient pharmacotherapy has not been established in this high-risk group so far. METHODS: In order to examine the effect of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor rivastigmine on tobacco dependence, we performed a 12-week, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. 26 alcohol-dependent smokers were randomized to rivastigmine 6 mg/day (n=14) or placebo (n=12). Assessments on addictive behavior included carbon monoxide (CO), severity of tobacco dependence (FTND), daily smoked cigarettes

Alcohol craving in rehabilitation: assessment of nutrition therapy.

If untreated, alcohol abuse, which often results from alcohol craving, causes major metabolic abnormalities, altered life-styles, lost productivity, and eventually death. Biochemical mechanisms that may contribute to alcohol craving include the stress response of the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis, the endogenous opiate beta-endorphin system, neurotransmitter synthesis and release, hypoglycemia, and nutrient deficiencies. The macronutrient ratio of meals, the resulting insulin response, and nutrient blood levels can affect amino acid and nutrient transport across the blood-brain barrier.

Exploring the relationship between cue-induced craving and withdrawal craving in MUD individuals based on a virtual-reality cue exposure paradigm.

BACKGROUND: This study developed a virtual reality (VR) drug cue exposure paradigm for individuals with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) to investigate the characteristics of withdrawal craving and cue-induced craving and their relationship. METHODS: A total of 150 male participants diagnosed with MUD completed questionnaires to assess their demographic characteristics and substance addiction profiles. Withdrawal craving for methamphetamine (MA) was measured using the visual analogue scale (VAS). VR technology was utilized to expose participants to three types of scenarios: neutral scenes,

Food perception in Orthorexia nervosa: Craving or avoidance?

Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is characterised by an excessive preoccupation with eating healthy foods. This disorder shares similarities with various pathological conditions, including anorexia nervosa and addictive behaviours. This research aimed to determine whether ON is primarily driven by a fear of unhealthy foods, similar to anorexia nervosa, or craving for healthy foods, akin to the patterns observed in addictive disorders. In an online study (Study 1), participants (n = 166 adults, mean age = 24.8 years, SD = 7.6 years, 48.8% female) reported their liking, wanting, and frequency of consumpt

Craving and opioid use disorder: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: The subjective experience of drug craving is a prominent and common clinical phenomenon for many individuals diagnosed with opioid use disorder (OUD), and could be a valuable clinical endpoint in medication development studies. The purpose of this scoping review is to provide an overview and critical analysis of opioid craving assessments located in the published literature examining OUD. METHOD: Studies were identified through a search of PubMed, Embase, and PsychInfo databases and included for review if opioid craving was the focus and participants were diagnosed with or in tr

Comparison of craving between pathological gamblers and alcoholics.

BACKGROUND: Craving is a central phenomenon in addiction. Temperament factors are also important for pathologic gambling and other addictions. The aim of this study was to compare craving between pathologic gamblers (PG) and alcohol-dependent subjects (ADS), correlating craving with personality. METHODS: Forty-nine PG and 101 ADS willing to start treatment were recruited. A trained psychiatrist diagnosed them according to DSM-IV criteria. To be included in this study, subjects had to be abstinent for at least five days and no longer than 21 days. Alcoholics should have no significant physical

Psychometric properties of the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale.

BACKGROUND: This study introduces the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS), which has been used in several clinical trials at the University of Pennsylvania's Treatment Research Center. The PACS is a five-item, self-report measure that includes questions about the frequency, intensity, and duration of craving, the ability to resist drinking, and asks for an overall rating of craving for alcohol for the previous week. Each question is scaled from 0 to 6. METHODS: To examine the questionnaire's psychometric properties, we sampled responses from 147 individuals participating in a 9-month combined n

Imagery of craving in opiate addicts undergoing detoxification.

Craving is a significant factor in opiate addiction that is associated with drug-dependence and in relapse to drug use after treatment. In order to better understand the psychological and physiological mechanisms of craving for opiates, we have developed an imagery-based procedure using personal verbal descriptions of craving in abstinent opiate addicts. Thirteen opiate addicts in detoxification were required to imagine and describe their craving experiences while autonomic measures of heart rate and arterial pressure were taken. Subjects displayed a significant increase in systolic blood pres

A Novel Therapeutic Mechanism for Nicotine Craving in Schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Tobacco use is a leading cause of mortality in schizophrenia, but treatments are partially effective. Default mode network (DMN) pathology is linked to tobacco use in schizophrenia, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) applied to the DMN affects craving in schizophrenia. To advance TMS therapeutics for tobacco use in schizophrenia, we used TMS experiments to 1) determine optimal stimulation parameters then 2) compare our optimal parameters against a well-established, effective TMS intervention for craving. METHODS: In Protocol Optimization TMS, nicotine-using individuals wit

Decoding Encoded Cravings: Epigenetic Drivers of Addiction.

Drug abuse is a chronic, relapsing disorder marked by compulsive drug-seeking behavior and profound neurobiological consequences. Each year, millions of individuals face serious social and legal repercussions due to addiction. This review synthesizes findings from both preclinical and clinical studies to examine how chronic exposure to substances such as alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, and opioids affects the central nervous system. Specifically, it explores the epigenetic modifications induced by these substances, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and noncoding RNA regulati

Craving money? Evidence from the laboratory and the field.

Continuing to gamble despite harmful consequences has plagued human life in many ways, from loss-chasing in problem gamblers to reckless investing during stock market bubbles. Here, we propose that these anomalies in human behavior can sometimes reflect Pavlovian perturbations on instrumental behavior. To show this, we combined key elements of Pavlovian psychology literature and standard economic theory into a single model. In it, when a gambling cue such as a gaming machine or a financial asset repeatedly delivers a good outcome, the agent may start engaging with the cue even when the expecte

The Influence of Gambling on Mood State and Alcohol Cravings.

Several decades of research have experimentally investigated the influence of alcohol on gambling. However, there has been only minimal experimental exploration of how gambling influences alcohol use. The aim of the current project was to evaluate how gambling influenced mood state and alcohol cravings through randomized experimental design when analyzed with comparison conditions.College students (N = 76) who reported regular alcohol use, gambling within the past year, and being college basketball fans were randomly assigned to watch a video of an exciting basketball game, watch a nondysphori

Food cravings during the first week of concussion.

The brain utilizes glucose as its main source of energy. Traumatic brain injuries may alter the brain's ability to shuttle glucose effectively; therefore, the symptoms experienced may be a signal of the dysregulation. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the presence of any specific food cravings during the first week post-concussion and if the consumption of such a food decreased the symptoms of concussion. The link to the survey was posted on 4 Canadian organization websites from November 2020 to February 2021. Any individual over 18 years old who had suffered one o

Antipsychotic Treatment and Tobacco Craving in People With Schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Nicotine dependence is high in schizophrenia, and craving is known to impact relapse during quit attempts. METHODS: We compared tobacco craving in smokers with schizophrenia treated with different antipsychotics. RESULTS: Mean craving scores were lowest in participants receiving first-generation antipsychotics, although these differences were not statistically significant. Craving with clozapine was not lower than with other antipsychotics. CONCLUSIONS: Further research is needed to determine whether differences in craving exist between antipsychotic classes.

Methods of assessing craving to gamble: a narrative review.

Although the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV) does not explicitly list craving as a diagnostic criterion for pathological gambling, theories of disordered gambling and research on relapse precipitants suggest that cravings--among other factors--provoke and maintain episodes of gambling. Assessment of craving to gamble is complicated by questions regarding (a) the emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological components of such craving; (b) the degree to which craving is viewed as an acute and fluctuating experience or as a relatively stable preoccup

Which dimensions of impulsivity are related to cigarette craving?

Cigarette smoking is a very important health problem and represents the largest preventable risk factor for premature death in developed countries. A considerable body of research indicates that impulsivity is a central etiological concept in many theoretical models of tobacco addiction. The aim of this study is to analyse which dimensions of impulsivity are related to cigarette craving. To this end, 40 undergraduate psychology students were screened using the revised Questionnaire on Smoking Urges (QSU-12) and the French adaptation of the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS). This scale ident

Chocolate cravings are susceptible to visuo-spatial interference.

The study investigated the specificity of visuo-spatial working memory-based techniques as a means to reduce chocolate cravings. Twenty-four self-identified chocolate cravers and 24 non-cravers formed and maintained images of chocolate-containing foods elicited by pictures, while performing a visuo-spatial task (loading the visuo-spatial sketch pad) or an auditory task (loading the phonological loop). Vividness and craving intensity were rated for each image. Concurrent visuo-spatial processing was found to render chocolate images significantly less vivid and cravings less intense compared to
