Orpha and Creativity-Alda Merini: Poet of Trauma.

My study is inspired by the clinical and meta-psychological contributions of Sándor Ferenczi, an underexplored voice, in the psychoanalytic understanding of creative processes. Ferenczi discusses fragmentation and reconstruction in the realm of creativity, and the creative reconstructive power of Orpha (Ferenczi, 1932a), a force against psychic death, following traumatic experience. To illustrate the creative process, I refer to the discourse on trauma and creativity, in the diary of the Italian poet Alda Merini (1986), fuelled by her post-traumatic narrative of her history of physical, psycho

Valuation as a bridge between aesthetics and creativity.

Evidence shows that aesthetic evaluations are underpinned by mechanisms in the reward system that compute value for objects of interest. In turn, recent behavioral, computational, and neuroimaging evidence suggests that creativity involves a similar valuation process, as people generate and evaluate the originality and adequacy of their ideas-two standard criteria of creativity. These findings suggest that creativity and aesthetic evaluation may be supported by a domain-general mechanism for computing subjective value. We offer a proposal in which creators' value computations are conveyed by t

Oxytocin enhances creativity specifically in approach-motivated individuals.

Oxytocin (OT), a neuropeptide pivotal in social and reproductive behaviors, has recently gained attention for its potential impact on cognitive processes relevant to creativity. Yet, the direct intricate interplay between OT and creativity, particularly in the context of individual differences in motivational orientations, remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of intranasal OT on creative thinking in individuals characterized by varying levels of approach and avoidance motivations. The initial study, involving participants with high approach or avoidance motivation, empl

Hypnosis, Psychedelics, and Creativity: An Overview and Analysis.

Alterations in consciousness have long been used to enhance creativity. Here, we focus on the ways in which hypnosis and psychedelics alter consciousness to enhance creativity, drawing on both research and first-hand accounts. The research utilizes standard measures of creativity as well as assessments of artistic, musical, and work-related problem-solving ability. First-hand accounts of scientific discovery offer individual perspective on creativity via personal experience. Various mechanisms of how altered states may enhance creativity are explored including the roles of positive mood, flow,

Modulation of creativity by transcranial direct current stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Creativity is the use of original ideas to accomplish something innovative. Previous research supports the notion that creativity is facilitated by an activation of the right and/or a deactivation of the left prefrontal cortex. In contrast, recent brain imaging studies suggest that creativity improves with left frontal activation. OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to further elucidate the neural basis of and ways to modulate creativity, based on the modulation of prefrontal cortical activity through the non-invasive brain stimulation technique transcranial direct current s

[Neuropsychology of Tourette's disorder: cognition, neuroimaging and creativity].

INTRODUCTION: Tourette's disorder is the result of fronto-striatal brain dysfunction affecting people of all ages, with a debut in early childhood and continuing into adolescence and adulthood. DEVELOPMENT: This article reviews the main cognitive, functional neuroimaging and creativity-related studies in a disorder characterized by an excess of dopamine in the brain. CONCLUSIONS: Given the special cerebral configuration of these patients, neuropsychological alterations, especially in executive functions, should be expected. However, the findings are inconclusive and are conditioned by factor

William Osler and the "fixed period" of creativity.

In 1905, William Osler was the pre-eminent physician in American medical circles but was unknown to the general public. The latter suddenly learned of him through damning newspaper accounts of his address announcing his retirement from the Johns Hopkins Medical School. In it Osler mentioned two "fixed ideas" he held-(1) that most major advances in civilization have been made by men under age 40 (the "fixed period") and (2) that those over 60 should retire because they create little of significance and sometimes stifled the initiatives of younger colleagues. He highlighted the second idea with

[Hans Selye, the grandmaster of creativity and originality].

Hans Selye, the father of the stress concept, was a giant of science of the twentieth century. Beyond his best-known work on stress, he also made several discoveries on various other fields of experimental medicine. He described and characterized various pluricausal diseases. In addition, he made pivotal contributions to the broad field of endocrinology, especially to the classification of steroids and to our better understanding of their mode of action. He developed surgical technics and experimental animal models suitable for studying the pathogenesis and prevention of human diseases. Selye

Reading skills, creativity, and insight: exploring the connections.

Studies of the relationship between creativity and specific reading disabilities have produced inconclusive results. We explored their relationship in a sample of 259 college students (age range: 17 to 38 years-old) from three Chilean universities. The students were tested on their verbal ability, creativity, and insight. A simple linear regression was performed on the complete sample, and on high- and low-achievement groups that were formed based on reading test scores. We observed a significant correlation in the total sample between outcomes on the verbal ability tasks, and on the creativit

Maurice Ravel's illness: a tragedy of lost creativity.

Maurice Ravel had been subject to psychiatric disorder for many years when signs of organic brain disease appeared at the age of 52. Aphasia, apraxia, agraphia, and alexia became established some five years later. Musical creativity was lost. Alajouanine diagnosed cerebral atrophy with bilateral ventricular enlargement. Though Ravel's condition deteriorated progressively, generalised dementia was not apparent. He died in December 1937, after a craniotomy performed by Clovis Vincent, possibly from a subdural haematoma. Vincent's operative findings are described here. The likely cause of Ravel's

Toward the concept of creative planetary health: insights from creative nature-based community practices in the UK.

INTRODUCTION: Planetary health recognizes the interdependencies between the health of humans and the state of the environment. The triple planetary crisis of climate change, diversity loss, and pollution impacts unequally on human health depending on environmental and social determinants, exacerbating pre-existing inequalities. Creative nature-based and cultural community practices have the potential to address planetary and human health issues and tackle health inequalities. METHODS: Data triangulation examined convergence and divergence of findings from two qualitative studies of creative n

A Gender Bias in the Attribution of Creativity: Archival and Experimental Evidence for the Perceived Association Between Masculinity and Creative Thinking.

We propose that the propensity to think creatively tends to be associated with independence and self-direction-qualities generally ascribed to men-so that men are often perceived to be more creative than women. In two experiments, we found that "outside the box" creativity is more strongly associated with stereotypically masculine characteristics (e.g., daring and self-reliance) than with stereotypically feminine characteristics (e.g., cooperativeness and supportiveness; Study 1) and that a man is ascribed more creativity than a woman when they produce identical output (Study 2). Analyzing arc

Amygdala-frontoparietal effective connectivity in creativity and humor processing.

Although both creativity and humor elicit experiences of surprise followed by appreciation, it remains unknown whether shared or distinct patterns of effective connectivity are involved in their processing. The present fMRI study used dynamic causal modeling and parametrical empirical Bayes analysis to examine the effective connectivity between the amygdala and frontoparietal network during two-stage creativity and humor processing. We examined processing during the setup and punch line stages for creativity and humor, including typical forms (alternate uses for creativity and incongruity-reso

Depression, mania and self-reported creativity in bipolar disorder.

The present study investigated the relationship between self-reported creativity and current symptoms of depression and mania. Three hundred and ninety-seven participants previously diagnosed with BD completed an online questionnaire that included demographic and clinical information questions, creativity and self-report measures of depression and hypo/mania over the past week. Those reporting clinically significant depressive symptoms had significantly lower creativity scores than those in the hypo/mania and no current symptom groups. There were no significant differences between those report

Cycles of insanity and creativity within contemplative neural systems.

Random connection weight disturbances within an assembly of artificial neural networks (ANN) drive a progression of activation patterns that are tantamount to the memories and ideas nucleating within the brain's cortex. The numerical evaluation of these pattern-based notions by another, more placid system of ANNs governs the magnitude of weight disturbances administered to the former assembly, that perturbative intensity in turn controlling the novelty of the resulting ideational stream as well as the retention of newly formed concepts. In search of solution patterns to posed problems, such co

The development of a creative work rehabilitation organisation.

Work as therapy has a place in mental healthcare, but there is disagreement about how and why it might be helpful, and how best to conceptualise or represent those benefits. Over the last 50 years, occupational and industrial therapy sheltered workshops have been key elements in the provision of work activities in psychiatric settings, and community-based horticultural activities and creative craft work have offered additional approaches. Using archival material, interviews, witness seminars and personal reflections, this article charts the birth and initial growth of Restore, a charity provid

Psychological shocks and creative moments in psychotherapy.

Milton H. Erickson's use of psychological shock is illustrated with five of his case histories with and without the use of hypnosis. The author outlines a number of principles for the safe and successful use of such shock therapy. Erickson's concept of psychological shock is then integrated with the author's views on the facilitating of creative moments as the essence of psychotherapy. A basic theoretical issue is discussed: Is hypnotherapy (and psychotherapy in general) to be concerned with the actual synthesis of new psychic structures or does it deal primarily with the creative reutilizatio
