BACKGROUND: The intensive care unit (ICU) is a setting where critically ill and high-risk patients undergo intensive therapy under continuous monitoring. Throughout their stay, patients undergo multiple tests and a range of medical and surgical procedures, with each case presenting various risk factors and complications. The study sought to evaluate risk factors in ICUs and identify those that present the greatest risk.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among ICU patients with risk factors who developed complications during their stay. Forty-seven patients of diverse ages and gen

Background: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the mortality of patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) in the UK reached 20%. Studies show up to 40% of these patients may have been eligible for palliative care (PC) referral on admission to the ICU. The involvement of PC teams improves the quality of care delivered and improves patient and family satisfaction. Several trigger tools have been developed to identify ICU patients most likely to benefit from palliative care; however, no consensus exists regarding the most effective tool. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study to identify

BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery is a major contributor to acute kidney injury (AKI); approximately 22% of patients who undergo cardiac surgery develop AKI, and among them, 2% will require renal replacement therapy (RRT). AKI is also associated with heightened risks of mortality and morbidity, longer intensive care stays, and increased treatment costs. Due to the challenges of treating AKI, prevention through the use of care bundles is suggested as an effective approach. This review aimed to assess the impact of care bundles on kidney outcomes, mortality, and hospital stay for cardiac patients in c

PURPOSE: Factors increasing the risk of maternal critical illness are rising in prevalence in maternity populations. Studies of general critical care populations highlight that severe illness is associated with longer-term physical and psychological morbidity. We aimed to compare short- and longer-term outcomes between women who required critical care admission during pregnancy/puerperium and those who did not.
METHODS: This is a cohort study including all women delivering in Scottish hospitals between 01/01/2005 and 31/12/2018, using national healthcare databases. The primary exposure was in

BACKGROUND: Delirium in the pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) poses substantial challenges for nursing care and has a profound impact on key clinical metrics, including the period of assisted breathing support, total hospitalization time, and child survival rates. Effective nursing strategies are essential to improve patient prognosis and quality of life.
AIM: We perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine how delirium relates to clinical outcomes in PICU patients and to map out the corresponding nursing management strategies.
DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis i

Parenting is a multi-domain capacity integrating emotional availability, executive functioning, physical caregiving, and a coherent self-narrative. When a parent survives critical illness and develops post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), these foundations may be disturbed concurrently, yet parenting has not been studied as an outcome of adult ICU survivorship. This biopsychosocial review treats parenting as the central phenomenon, drawing on family systems, attachment, ecological, and trauma transmission frameworks. We conducted a narrative review with a structured search and a hierarchical sy

INTRODUCTION: The global prevalence of morbid obesity is increasing, presenting challenges in cardiac surgery. Morbid obesity (body mass index ≥40 kg/m2) is associated with a high burden of cardiometabolic comorbidities and obesity-specific physiological alterations that increase perioperative risk and complicate surgical, anesthetic, and cardiopulmonary bypass management. As the number of obese patients presenting for cardiac surgery rises, a synthesis of current evidence and perioperative strategies is needed to optimize outcomes in this high-risk population.
METHODS: This narrative review

OBJECTIVES: Prematurity is a risk factor for in-hospital mortality after cardiac surgery. Among preterm infants, very preterm (VPT) infants are at the greatest risk of mortality. We evaluated risk factors for in-hospital mortality in VPT infants born at <34 weeks of gestational age with critical congenital heart disease (CHD) who underwent cardiac surgery at our institution.
METHODS: This study is a single-center, retrospective review of VPT infants who underwent cardiac surgical intervention from our dedicated neonatal cardiac care program (Columbia model) between 2006 and 2021. The primary
