INTRODUCTION: The prognosis of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is considered poor. Despite the recent therapeutic improvements, the survival outcomes and prognostic factors have been less studied. This study aimed to investigate the long-term clinical and endoscopic outcomes of CCS.
METHODS: Thirty-one patients diagnosed since 1999 and followed up for over 6 months were included. Data regarding survival outcomes, clinical symptoms, endoscopic findings, and treatment were collected and analyzed. R (version 3.6.1) was used to perform the survival analyses.
RESULTS: The median (interquartile ra

An 86-year-old man with a 3 months history of weight loss and bloody diarrhea was admitted to our hospital. Endoscopic examination revealed transverse colon cancer, along with numerous polypoid lesions in the stomach, duodenum, colon, and rectum. These findings led to a diagnosis of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome(CCS). Due to advanced colon cancer with stenosis, the patient underwent laparoscopic extended right hemicolectomy of the colon with D3 lymphadenectomy. The patient had no major postoperative complications and was discharged on the 17th postoperative day. Six weeks after surgery, the patien

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare nonfamilial polyposis syndrome characterized by epithelial disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract and skin. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features and potential therapies for CCS. Six patients with CCS admitted from December 1992 to July 2008 to Peking Union Medical College Hospital were evaluated. All patients had clinical manifestation of nonhereditary gastrointestinal polyposis with diarrhea, skin hyperpigmentation, alopecia, and nail dystrophy. Fecal occult blood was positive in all six cases. Serum hemoglobin, potassium

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare, noninherited gastrointestinal polyposis syndrome associated with characteristic ectodermal abnormalities. Here, we report a case of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome with cecal intussusception relieved by colonoscopy. A 52-year-old man who was diagnosed as CCS pathologically two years previously presented abdominal pain and sub fever-up. Physical examination revealed the palpable mass sized approximate 10 cm in diameter in the upper abdominal site, in addition to the symptoms of alopecia, absent fingernails and toenails. However, abdominal wall rigidity and r

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome was first described in 1955. The clinical features of this rare syndrome of unknown etiology include nonhereditary gastrointestinal polyposis together with diarrhea, nail dystrophy, alopecia, and hyperpigmentation of the skin. This syndrome has been divided into five clinical types based on initial symptoms. We describe a case of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome presenting with taste disturbance as the major symptom, present a comprehensive review of the literature concerning this rare syndrome, and suggest therapeutic treatment options.

A 68-year-old man with the clinical features of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome developed cancer of the ascending colon. Although Cronkhite-Canada syndrome has always been considered a benign condition, it may be a premalignant disorder, as suggested by the clinical course of the patient whose case is described herein.

Hyperkalemia is a common electrolyte disorder in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) that increases in prevalence with the decline of glomerular fltration rate (GFR). Another risk of hyperkalemia is the use of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi) and/or mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) in managing CKD and proteinuria. The treatment of chronic hyperkalemia is challenging especially for outpatients. Treatment options for hyperkalemia include the potassium exchange resins of which two new potassium binders, Patiromer Sorbitex Calcium, and Sodium Zirconium Cy

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) polyposis is a rare condition in GI diseases. To date about 500 cases of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) have been reported worldwide.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a 60-year-old female patient who presented with dyspepsia, abdominal pain, and weight loss of 1-year duration. Her physical examination showed alopecia and onychodystrophy. Upper endoscopy revealed diffuse markedly thickened gastric mucosa involving the whole stomach with thickened gastric rugae and numerous polypoidal lesions. Histopathological examination showed marked hyperplasia of the foveolar glan

Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome (CCS) presents with gastrointestinal polyposis and the triad of cutaneous abnormalities including nail dystrophy, alopecia, and hyperpigmentation of the skin. The etiology is not well understood. The histology of skin lesion in CCS has not been routinely described. Especially, the nail matrix pathology has not been reported. In this study, the authors report the nail matrix pathology in a patient with CCS. Interestingly, the histologic evaluation revealed matrix hypergranulosis. Because matrix hypergranulosis is commonly found in several inflammatory nail diseases, th

One hundred and ten cases of Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome (C-C-S) reported in Japan were reviewed in this epidemiologic study. Seventy-five percent of all C-C-S cases reported in the world in literature have been reported from Japan. There has been no special occupation associated with an increased incidence of C-C-S. Mental and physical stress have been confirmed as among the most important risk factors for this syndrome. Hypogeusia is the dominant initial symptom which usually is followed by diarrhea and ectodermal changes including alopecia, nail dystrophy and skin pigmentation. Gastrointestin

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare disease characterized by diffuse gastrointestinal polyposis with chronic diarrhea and ectodermal change, but its etiology is unknown. We present a case at the age of 26 years complaining of epigastralgia and weight loss. Endoscopic examination revealed extensive diffuse polypoid lesions of the stomach and the terminal ileum, all of which showed hyperplastic polyps pathologically. There were no polypoid lesions in his colon. He has no family history of diffuse gastrointestinal polyposis. Diffuse gastrointestinal hyperplastic polyposis without any heredi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a noninherited condition, associated with high morbidity, and characterized by gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyposis, alopecia, onychodystrophy, hyperpigmentation, and diarrhea. All features may respond to immunosuppressive therapy, but little is known about the etiology. An autoimmune origin has been suggested but not proved. From a retrospectively selected cohort, we evaluated clinicopathologic features, including immunostaining for IgG4 (an antibody associated with autoimmunity), and therapeutic outcomes in a cohort of CCS patients

A 62-year-old Malaysian woman presented with a constellation of skin signs including alopecia, hyperpigmentation and nail dystrophy. On questioning, a history of diarrhoea, taste disturbance and weight loss was found. The onset of these changes coincided with the administration of thyroxine prescribed for a benign multinodular goitre. Hormonal investigations showed no abnormality and no underlying malignancy was found. Investigation of the diarrhoea showed a protein-losing enteropathy with generalized intestinal polyposis and non-specific histology. A diagnosis of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome was

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare, nonhereditary gastrointestinal polyposis syndrome. The rarity of CCS has led to a limited understanding of its optimal management and prognosis. We aimed to share our experience with 7 CCS patients, investigating the clinical characteristics, diagnostic approaches, treatment strategies, and prognoses we have established. We conducted a retrospective analysis of adult patients diagnosed with CCS between January 2016 and December 2024. The primary outcome was to evaluate the diagnostic findings and treatment course. Secondary outcomes included the asses

BACKGROUND: A 72-year-old man was referred for evaluation of dysgeusia, diarrhea and anorexia. 3 months prior he began to experience taste changes, a decline in appetite and 3-7 loose, non-bloody stools per day. Nausea and lower abdominal cramping subsequently developed and he lost 22.68 kg in weight. His past medical history included atrial fibrillation treated with anticoagulation and digoxin. In the past, he had experienced markedly increased levels of triglycerides and was being treated for this condition with a lipid-lowering agent. There was no family history of colorectal neoplasia or I

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a rare cause of chronic diarrhea and malabsorption where patients develop multiple polyps throughout the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, accompanied by ectodermal changes. Due to its rarity, early detection and diagnosis are challenging for physicians, inevitably leading to high mortality. CCS patients have a higher prevalence of GI cancer compared to the general population. Therefore, a follow-up endoscopy is necessary. We report a new case of CCS in an 85-year-old male who presented with chronic watery diarrhea, weight loss, and skin changes including alopecia

We present a case of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome, which is a rare disease classically characterised by hyperpigmentation, alopecia and onychodystrophy associated with clinical gastrointestinal symptoms and hamartomatous gastrointestinal polyps. Management primarily involves immunosuppression and nutritional support, which led to remission in this case. The recognition of cutaneous features may lead to early diagnosis and reduce morbidity and mortality.
