An annotated checklist of free-living Copepoda (Crustacea) of Iraq: diversity, distribution, and biogeographical affinities.

Copepods are a major component of aquatic zooplankton and play essential roles in ecosystem functioning, yet their diversity in Iraq has remained poorly documented and taxonomically fragmented. This study presents the first comprehensive checklist of free-living Copepoda in Iraq, based on published records spanning 1921-2025. Only free-living taxa of Calanoida, Cyclopoida, and Harpacticoida were included, excluding parasitic forms and unidentified larval stages. A total of 51 confirmed species were compiled, comprising 26 Calanoida, 20 Cyclopoida, and 5 Harpacticoida. These include 22 freshwat

The combined effects of temperature and salinity on the stomatogastric nervous system of two species of decapod crustacea.

Nervous systems must maintain coordinated activity patterns despite perturbations from unstable environmental factors (e.g., temperature, pH, and salinity). Marine organisms experience daily and seasonal changes in temperature while precipitation and ocean currents alter sea water salinity. We examined how the stomatogastric nervous systems (STNSs) from two species of decapod crustaceans (Cancer borealis and Homarus americanus) were affected by altered temperature and salinity. We used the patterned activity of the pyloric rhythm to assay the tolerance of the STNS to these two perturbations, i

Parasitic effects of the bopyrid Megacepon goetici (Crustacea: Isopoda) on the varunid crab Gaetice depressus.

The effects of infestation by the bopyrid isopod Megacepon goetici on the varunid crab Gaetice depressus were investigated. This crab is one of the most common crabs in Japanese intertidal shores where it plays a key role in structuring the benthic community. Samples were collected in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. From a total of 1694 crabs, 61 (3.6%) were parasitized by bopyrid isopods. No ovigerous females were parasitized, which may be evidence of parasitic castration of female host crabs, as has been described in other parasitized brachyuran crabs. Total weight was reduced in both males and

Heavy metal toxicity in Exosphaeroma gigas (Crustacea, Isopoda) from the coastal zone of Beagle Channel.

Acute toxicity of copper, cadmium, and zinc on isopod Exosphaeroma gigas was evaluated at 20 per thousand and 30 per thousand salinity. Six concentrations were assayed to estimate effective concentration of the toxicant that affects 50% of tested animal (EC50), while physiological responses and bioaccumulation were determined at 0.42 and 1.95 mg L(-1) of each metal. The following toxicity orders were obtained: Cd>or=Cu>Zn at 20 per thousand salinity and Cu>Zn>or=Cd at 30 per thousand salinity. Copper treatments showed a reduction in oxygen consumption at 30 per thousand salinity, while an oppo

Induction of ovarian growth in Aegla platensis (Crustacea, Aeglidae) by means of neuroregulators incorporated to food.

The freshwater crab Aegla platensis was used as a model to induce ovarian growth by adding different neuroregulators to a pellet food formulation. Added compounds were the dopaminergic inhibitor spiperone or the enkephalinergic inhibitor naloxone, both of them at a dose of 10(-8) mol/animal. Animals were fed on the enriched pellets twice a week. After 7 wk, the gonadosomatic index (GI) was calculated as (gonad fresh weight/body fresh weight) x 100. GI significantly increased only for those females fed on spiperone pellets, compared to a control group receiving pellets with no compound added. D

Does mercury interact with the inhibitory effect of dichlorvos on Palaemon serratus (Crustacea: Decapoda) cholinesterase?

Mercury is one of the most hazardous metals that may contaminate estuarine ecosystems and induce toxic effects on wildlife organisms. It has been suggested that impairment of cholinesterase (ChE) activity may be involved in the resulting mercury toxicity. Following Palaemon serratus exposure to mercury chloride (HgCl2), no effect on ChE activity was observed whatever the concentration used (to 37.5 microM) or the time of exposure (to 7 days). By contrast, following 24 h exposure to dichlorvos, an organophosphate insecticide with a well-characterised anti-ChE action, decrease of ChE activity wa

A new terrestrial talitrid genus, Kachinorchestia, with a new species from Myanmar (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Arcitalitridae).

BACKGROUND: The Arcitalitridae (Amphipoda, Senticaudata, Talitrida, Talitroidea) is a diverse family containing 15 genera, of which Myanmarorchestia Hou, 2017 and Solitroides Suzuki, Nakano, Nguyen, Nguyen, Morino & Tomikawa, 2017 were reported in Southeast Asia. During research of terrestrial amphipods in Myanmar, we found character traits of some specimens did not match any existing genus of the family Arcitalitridae. These specimens should belong to a new genus. NEW INFORMATION: This new genus Kachinorchestia Hou, gen. nov. with one new species Kachinorchestia putao Hou, sp. nov. is descri

Ephippia of Daphnia O.F. Müller (Crustacea: Branchiopoda) from the Late Eocene of Central Tibetan Plateau.

On a planetary scale, the Eocene is interesting for climate changes, extensive orogeny and transformation of terrestrial and aquatic communities. Mass extinction of many organisms took place in the late Eocene to the early Oligocene, but not all groups have been studied in detail. The most complete data on taxonomy, diversity, distribution, and ecology were obtained on the Eocene angiosperms, vertebrates, insects, marine molluscs and large-bodied crustaceans. At the same time, Eocene microcrustaceans from inland waters are significantly less studied. Here we present the first data on the Clado

Updated checklist of semi-terrestrial and estuarine crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) of Barbados, West Indies.

Considering the growing threats to the biodiversity of small Caribbean islands (e.g., habitat loss and fragmentation, overexploitation, invasive species, and climate change), it is important to establish biodiversity inventories that serve as baselines for monitoring and evaluation of conservation efforts. In Barbados (West Indies), the most recent comprehensive taxonomic account of brachyuran crabs came from Rathbun (1921) reporting the specimens collected by the University of Iowa Barbados-Antigua Expedition in 1918. The present study fills the 100-year gap in knowledge by providing an updat

Morphological conservatism and variability in the ephippium sculpture of the genus Simocephalus Schoedler, 1858 (Crustacea: Cladocera: Daphniidae).

Despite the important advances made in the taxonomy of water fleas (Crustacea: Cladocera), many taxa have not yet been revised. The genus Simocephalus Schoedler, 1858 (Anomopoda: Daphniidae) belongs to understudied groups. During the last forty years, several attempts have been made to use genetic approaches to estimate species diversity within Simocephalus. At the same time, investigations on morphology almost stopped after the last revision of Orlova-Bienkowskaja (2001). The lack of morphological data, even on the most widespread taxa, makes it difficult to apply the remains of this group to

A new genus and species of oceanic planktonic Tisbidae (Crustacea, Copepoda, Harpacticoida) with enlarged modified eyes.

Both sexes of a new monotypic genus of Tisbidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) are described from the epi- or mesopelagic zone in the Kuroshio region, Japan. Gyoromeguttatumgen. et sp. nov. belongs to a monophyletic lineage of deepwater holoplanktonic genera defined by a suite of characters. Within this clade, Gyoromegen. nov. appears most closely related to Neotisbella Boxshall, 1979. The most distinguishable feature of G.guttatumgen. et sp. nov. is the presence of large, paired, frontal modified eyes, each consisting of a baculiform ocellus, a globular (Gicklhorn's?) organ, and a semi-parabolic p

The toxicity of metal mixtures to the estuarine mysid Neomysis integer (Crustacea: Mysidacea) under changing salinity.

Water quality criteria are mainly based on data obtained in toxicity tests with single toxicants. Several authors have demonstrated that this approach may be inadequate as the joint action of the chemicals is not taken into account. In this study, the combined effects of six metals on the European estuarine mysid Neomysis integer (Leach, 1814) were examined. Acute 96-h toxicity tests were performed with mercury, copper, cadmium, nickel, zinc and lead, and this as single compounds and as a mixture of all six. The concentrations of the individual metals of the equitoxic mixtures were calculated
