Members of the Culex pipiens complex as vectors of viruses.

Members of the Culex pipiens complex have been implicated as vectors of a number of arboviruses including St. Louis encephalitis, West Nile, Sindbis, and Rift Valley fever viruses. For some viruses, such as West Nile virus, laboratory studies have indicated that various members of this complex have a similar ability to become infected with and transmit virus, thus providing evidence for the similarity among the various members of this complex. On the other hand, although strains of Cx. pipiens from various parts of the world have all been relatively efficient vectors of Rift Valley fever virus

Resistance to permethrin in Culex tarsalis in northeastern Colorado.

Resistance to permethrin and the activity of metabolic enzymes were monitored in field-collected Culex tarsalis from northeastern Colorado during 2005 and 2006 and compared with a lab strain from Bakersfield, CA. Collections were made from 13 different sites within and outside of the mosquito abatement area. Resistance levels by year and early vs. late season were examined and median lethal time values and 95% confidence intervals were compared with the lab strain. Mosquitoes collected in 2005 were more resistant to permethrin than either the lab strain or mosquitoes collected in 2006. Glutath

Arbovirus transmission by Culex nigripalpus in Florida, 2005.

Understanding the transmission patterns of West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, WNV and SLEV) could result in an increased ability to predict transmission risk to humans. To examine transmission patterns between vector and host, we trapped mosquitoes in three Florida counties from June to November 2005 by using chicken-baited lard can mosquito traps. These traps were used to monitor for presence of WNV and SLEV in mosquitoes and subsequent transmission of these viruses to chickens. In total, 166,615 female mosquitoes were sorted into 4,009 pools

Attractiveness of chickens and bobwhite quail for Culex nigripalpus.

An experiment to determine if wild Culex nigripalpus preferentially enter lard-can traps baited with chickens or bobwhite quail was conducted. A strong preference for the chicken-baited trap was observed. Further development of transmission models for St. Louis encephalitis virus in southern Florida should consider increased biting rates on sentinel chickens and the consequences for the interpretation of sentinel seroconversion data.

[A study on transmission of dengue virus by Culex fatigans].

Patients with acute dengue fever within 2 days of onset were simultaneously bitten by Culex fatigans, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which were fed and incubated in the laboratory. Isolation and quantitative assay of dengue virus and transmission experiment were conducted on specimens collected from 3 kinds of mosquitoes at different time. The result showed a positive rate of 5.13% (2/39) and an average viral titer of 2.41 logTCID50, for Culex fatigans, which indicates that Culex fatigans might be naturally infected with dengue virus and might transmit dengue virus after infection. But th

Mosquitoes of the genus Culex in the Suez Canal Governorates.

Mosquitoes are among the most annoying and important vectors of human and animal diseases as malaria, filariasis, yellow fever, rift valley fever...etc. In this paper, it was aimed to study the present status of species of genus Culex in the Suez Canal Governorates after the reconstruction and developmental projects. Five species of Culex were identified: C. pipiens, C. univittatus, C. antennatus, C. poicilipes and C. pusillus. The latter species was represented by two specimens. C. pipiens was the commonest species both indoors and outdoors. C. antennatus and C. poicilipes were found only out

Crepuscular flight activity of Culex erraticus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Circadian patterns of flight activity in mosquitoes can influence pathogen transmission by regulating dispersal potential of vectors and contact rates between vectors and reservoir and/or dead-end hosts. We investigated circadian activity patterns of Culex erraticus (Dyar and Knab) at a wetland field site in central Alabama, by aspirating resting adults and questing females in the morning and evening hours, respectively. Mosquitoes were aspirated at regular time intervals to determine the time of day during which peak resting site-seeking and host-seeking activities occurred. Day-to-day variat

Vitellogenin genes are transcribed in Culex quinquefasciatus ovary.

BACKGROUND: Culex quinquefasciatus, a cosmopolitan, domestic, and highly anthropophilic mosquito, is a vector of pathogenic arboviruses such as West Nile virus and Rift Valley virus, as well as lymphatic filariasis. The current knowledge on its reproductive physiology regarding vitellogenin expression in different tissues is still limited. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we analysed the transcriptional profiles of vitellogenin genes in the fat body and ovaries of C. quinquefasciatus females during the first gonotrophic cycle. METHODS: C. quinquefasciatus ovaries and/or fat bodies were dissected i

Host-feeding patterns of Culex mosquitoes in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Different mosquito-borne pathogens are circulating in Iran including Sindbis virus, West Nile virus, filarioid worms and malaria parasites. However, the local transmission cycles of these pathogenic agents are poorly understood, especially because ecological data on vector species are scarce and there is limited knowledge about the host range; this understanding could help to direct species-specific vector control measurements or to prioritize research. METHODS: In the summers of 2015 and 2016, blood-fed mosquitoes were collected at 13 trapping sites on the coast of the Caspian Se

Progress in studies on the overwintering of the mosquito Culex tritaeniorhynchus.

A detailed review is presented of half a century's research in Japan, Korea and the temperate zone of China on the overwintering of Culex tritaeniorhynchus, the main vector of Japanese encephalitis. The evidence indicates that in the temperate zone, two types of overwintering strategy can be distinguished in Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, ie survival by adults in situ in a dormant state, or migration by individuals which are in reproductive diapause. The authors contend that the former strategy is not very effective, and individuals which overwinter in this way do not constitute the main source of the

Population structure and dispersal of the freshwater mosquitoes Culex annulirostris and Culex palpalis (Diptera: Culicidae) in Papua New Guinea and northern Australia.

In 1995 and 1998, outbreaks of Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus occurred for the first time in Australia. Virus isolation from pools of mosquitoes indicated Culex annulirostris Skuse was the most likely vector. It was hypothesized that wind-blown mosquitoes introduced JE from Papua New Guinea to the Torres Strait and Cape York, northern Australia. This study used levels of genetic differentiation, as indirect evidence of dispersal of mosquitoes between the two continents. The results have demonstrated that in the region incorporating Western Province in PNG, the Torres Strait and Cape York Pen

Molecular surveillance supports differing roles for Culex pipiens and Culex restuans (Diptera: Culicidae) in West Nile virus transmission in Chicago, Illinois.

The Chicago metropolitan area is a hotspot for human West Nile virus (WNV) cases. Despite extensive surveillance and research, predicting WNV cases in Chicago on a local scale is a major challenge. Most studies and mosquito surveillance efforts do not differentiate between the cryptic species Culex pipiens Linnaeus and Culex restuans (Theobald), key vectors of WNV, due to the challenge of distinguishing them morphologically. This obscures each species' respective role in transmission and may blunt the accuracy of local case forecasting. We used species-specific PCR diagnosis to identify Chicag

Comparative fitness of reemerging St. Louis encephalitis virus in vertebrate and mosquito cells, Culex tarsalis and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes, and mice.

The human pathogenic orthoflavivirus St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) reemerged in the western United States in 2015 after more than a decade of absence and has since expanded throughout California with sustained interannual transmission. This shift from the historically sporadic pattern of SLEV activity before 2003 raises the question of whether contemporary strains differ in fitness from earlier strains. To assess whether reemerging SLEV possesses enhanced infectivity or transmissibility, we compared five contemporary genotype III strains from California (2016-2023) with a historical geno
