Exploring Cultural Competence, Inclusivity, and Diversity in Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy: A Phenomenological Study.

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and other minoritized populations are insufficiently represented in research on therapeutic psychedelics. This research was a phenomenological qualitative exploration of a culturally diverse (Hispanic, African American, Asian, Native American, biracial, or LGBTQIA+) and low-income sample of 15 individuals receiving ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) at a sliding-scale fee community clinic. Participants were interviewed after a ketamine session, after a ketamine integration session, and one month later. The interviews inquired about mental and

Effect of oxygen tension and antioxidants on the developmental competence of buffalo oocytes cultured in vitro.

AIM: Oxidative stress (OS) is one of the major disruptors of oocyte developmental competence, which appears due to the imbalance between the production and neutralization of reactive oxygen species (ROS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In Experiment 1, buffalo oocytes were in vitro matured, fertilized, and cultured at 38.5°C under 5% CO2 + 20% O2 in standard CO2 incubator (OS) or under 5% O2 + 5% CO2 + 90% N2 (Multi-gas incubator, low O2). In Experiment 2, buffalo cumulus oocytes complexes (COCs) were matured in Basic maturation medium (BMM) composed of TCM199+ 10% FCS+ 10 µg/ml FSH+ 50 µg/ml gentami

Culture-Competent SARS-CoV-2 in Nasopharynx of Symptomatic Neonates, Children, and Adolescents.

Children do not seem to drive transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We isolated culture-competent virus in vitro from 12 (52%) of 23 SARS-CoV-2-infected children; the youngest was 7 days old. Our findings show that symptomatic neonates, children, and teenagers shed infectious SARS-CoV-2, suggesting that transmission from them is plausible.

Assessing and Providing Culturally Competent Care in Radiation Oncology for Deaf Cancer Patients.

PURPOSE: Recognition of disparities for vulnerable populations in the field of oncology is increasing, but little attention has been paid to deaf patients. At least a million Americans are culturally deaf and use American Sign Language. Poor linguistic and cultural competency among physicians is a barrier to care delivery for these patients, placing them at risk for treatment disparities. To better educate oncology practitioners, including radiation oncologists, regarding the unique needs of this cohort, we performed an evidence-based literature review of culturally competent care for deaf pat

Integrating between cultural competence and humility: a qualitative study of Israeli pediatric cardiologists.

BACKGROUND: Working with culturally diverse populations in pediatric cardiology settings requires cultural competence and cultural humility. However, little is known about how physicians integrate these approaches. In this study we examined how pediatric cardiology providers describe the incorporation of cultural competence and humility into healthcare services provided to families of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) in pediatric settings in Israel, a country characterized by significant cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted w

Developing a culturally adapted competency framework for community paramedicine practice in Saudi Arabia.

Community paramedicine (CP) has emerged globally as a model for extending healthcare access, but little evidence exists on how it can be adapted to the sociocultural and systemic context of Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to develop a culturally tailored competency framework for CP to inform education, practice, and policy. A qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with 15 experts from diverse regions and professional roles in Saudi Arabia was adopted. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify the core competencies. To complement the qualitative synthesis and explore structural pa

A Culture of Early Mobilization in Adult Intensive Care Units: Perspective and Competency of Physicians.

BACKGROUND: Early mobility (EM) is vital in the intensive care unit (ICU) to counteract immobility-related effects. A multidisciplinary approach is key, as it requires precise initiation knowledge. However, physicians' understanding of EM in adult ICU settings remains unexplored. This study was conducted to investigate the knowledge and clinical competency of physicians working in adult ICUs toward EM. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 236 physicians to assess their knowledge of EM. A rigorously designed survey comprising 30 questions across the demographic, theoretical, and clinic

Immune-competent in vitro co-culture models as an approach for skin sensitisation assessment.

There is a complex interplay between numerous cell types that act at different steps of the mechanism leading to allergic contact dermatitis. The validated in vitro methods for skin sensitisation assessment provide good statistical correspondence to local lymph node assay (LLNA) or to human data but, for the most part, poorly represent the actual in vivo situation as they generally involve single cell type culture in 2D. Significant progress has been made over the past decades to develop new technologies of data generation concurrently with novel approaches to improve the models especially by

From cultural competence to cross-cultural fluency: a framework for transnational medical education in an era of global health workforce mobility.

BACKGROUND: As medical education increasingly operates across national boundaries through institutional partnerships, offshore campuses, dual-degree programs, and digital learning platforms, the need for culturally responsive pedagogical frameworks has become urgent. Existing models of cross-cultural medical education were developed primarily for domestic settings and do not adequately address the complexities that arise when curricula, faculty, and learners simultaneously traverse multiple cultural, regulatory, and institutional contexts. This paper proposes a conceptual shift from cultural c

Beyond cultural competence: a qualitative analysis of psychologists' experiences with Muslim clients in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Muslim mental health is an emerging field of inquiry in the global South. Understanding how mental health conditions are interpreted within diverse Muslim communities is important for culturally responsive psychological care. METHODS: This qualitative study explored psychologists' experiences of providing services to Muslim clients in the Western Cape, South Africa, and explored psychologists' accounts of explanatory models of mental health conditions encountered in therapeutic practice. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 clinical and counseling psychologists prac

Building a bridge across the imitation-innovation divide: Children's weighing of cultural and instrumental competence.

We investigated how children weigh different forms of perceived competence (cultural and instrumental) in a potential model when deciding to imitate or innovate an alternative means to obtain a material reward. In Experiment 1, 120 children aged 3-6 years (M age = 4.99 years; 53% female) were randomly assigned to one of four conditions varying a model's demonstrated competence: (1) Culturally Aware, (2) Culturally Unaware, (3) Instrumentally Competent, or (4) Instrumentally Incompetent. Children observed their model perform a task incorporating both causally irrelevant (redundant) and causally

Canadian immigrants' oral health and oral health care providers' cultural competence capacity.

BACKGROUND: Immigrants to Canada count among the socially disadvantaged groups experiencing higher rates of oral disease. Culturally competent oral health care providers (OHCPs) stand to be allies for immigrant oral health. The literature reveals limited knowledge of practising OHCPs' cultural competency, and little synthesis of the topic has been completed. A scoping review is warranted to identify and map current knowledge of OHCPs' understanding of culturally competent care along with barriers and facilitators to developing capacity. METHODS: This study was conducted between December 2022

Culturally Competent Clinical Care for Older Sexual Minority Adults: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: As recent efforts to improve culturally competent clinical care (CCCC) have largely overlooked older LGB adults, we conducted a scoping review of position statements, empirical, and non-empirical research and suggest action steps. METHODS: We followed PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews Guidelines and searched for articles 1/1/11-3/14/19 (n = 1210) and other resources (n = 52), deduplicating, dually screening abstracts (n = 1,156), reviewing full-text (n = 107), and conducted a content analysis to identify distinct and cross-cutting domains (n = 44). Why do Thoracic Radiologists Need to Know About Cultural Competence (and What Is it Anyway)?

Thoracic radiologists meet patients when performing procedures such as transthoracic computed tomography-guided biopsy and during shared decision-making required for lung cancer screening. Both patients and thoracic radiologists are influenced by their cultures, which affect their health care interactions. While culture may relate to religion or ethnicity of individuals, it also includes multiple additional characteristics such as gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, education, occupation, age, disability, and more. Patients from different cultures undergo similar medical procedur

Effects of pre-maturational culture duration on developmental competence of bovine small-sized oocytes.

We investigated the effects of pre-maturational (pre-IVM) culture on the developmental competence of small-sized bovine oocytes (110 and < 115 µm). Oocytes were cultured with 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) for 0, 5, or 10 h and subjected to in vitro maturation, fertilization, and culture. The cleavage rate (73%) of small-sized oocytes with 5 h pre-IVM was higher than those with 0 and 10 h pre-IVM (61 and 62%, respectively). The blastocyst rate (16%) of embryos derived from small-sized oocytes with 5 h pre-IVM was higher than those with 0 and 10 h pre-IVM (9 and 8%, respectively). In additi

Self-managing HIV/AIDS: cultural competence and health among women in Nairobi, Kenya.

Despite recent efforts to supply antiretroviral therapy, many in Africa are not receiving medication, instead relying on self-management in their attempts to remain healthy. In Kenya, the majority of those infected are women who are below the extreme poverty level. Building on research demonstrating a link between knowledge of HIV/AIDS management and the length of time HIV-positive women have lived in Nairobi, this article uses a cognitive anthropological approach that conceives of culture as shared models and explores the relationship between how well women know a cultural model of self-manag

Response to culturally competent drug treatment among homeless persons with different living arrangements.

This study investigated the association between program cultural competence and homeless individuals' drug use after treatment in Los Angeles County, California. Los Angeles County has the largest and most diverse population of homeless individuals in the nation. We randomly selected for analysis 52 drug-treatment programs and 2158 participants who identified as homeless in the Los Angeles County Participant Reporting System in 2011. We included their living arrangements (indoors and stable, indoors and unstable, and outdoors) and individual and program characteristics (particularly whether th

Do cultural and linguistic competence matter in Latinos' completion of mandated substance abuse treatment?

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that culturally and linguistically responsive programs may improve substance abuse treatment outcomes among Latinos. However, little is known about whether individual practices or culturally and linguistically responsive contexts support efforts by first-time Latino clients to successfully complete mandated treatment. METHODS: We analyzed client and program data from publicly funded treatment programs contracted through the criminal justice system in California. A sample of 5,150 first-time Latino clients nested within 48 treatment programs was analyze
