Synthetic microbial co-cultures for modular bioelectronic sensing in diverse environments.

Whole-cell bioelectronic sensors are particularly well-suited for environmental and health monitoring as they can be integrated into compact electronic devices for field deployment over extended periods. However, current engineering strategies lack modularity, are limited to a few microbial chassis and depend on specialized instruments for signal detection. We present the electroactive co-culture sensing system (e-COSENS), a plug-and-play system for whole-cell bioelectronic sensor development. Here a 'sender' bacterium produces electron mediators in response to analytes and a 'receiver' bacter

Culturable bacteria in the gastric tissue and diversity of antimicrobial resistance in adults with gastritis.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing knowledge in microbiome studies data about the diversity of cultivable bacteria and their drug resistance patterns in patients with gastritis are scant. METHODS: Two gastric biopsies of 171 symptomatic patients were collected and examined by histological and microbiological methods. Viable bacteria were characterized using conventional techniques, and antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates was detected. RESULTS: Acute gastritis, chronic gastritis, and peptic ulcers were detected in 3.5%, 86.5%, and 5.8% of the patients, respectively. Culturable bacteria were

Bordetella pertussis exhibits genomic diversity within patients and laboratory culture.

UNLABELLED: Over the past decade, genomic characterization of Bordetella pertussis isolates recovered from US pertussis patients has unveiled noteworthy structural gene order variations. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) shows that although B. pertussis exhibits little gene sequence variation, genomes from clinical isolates frequently differ in gene order through rearrangement between insertion sequence elements. To better understand rates of genome rearrangement and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in B. pertussis, intra-patient genomic diversity was examined. Five states submitted, on averag

Culturally Competent Care for Diverse Populations: A Review of Transcultural Nursing Education.

Transcultural nursing is a discipline that emphasizes culturally competent care for diverse populations, recognizing the influence of culture on health beliefs, values, practices, and outcomes. It requires nurses to respect cultural differences and similarities, but faces challenges in curriculum design, faculty development, and student assessment. This paper explores transcultural nursing education's current state and future directions, addressing the American Association of Colleges of Nursing essentials for integrating cultural content into nursing curricula, reviewing Madeleine Leininger's

Neurocognition and its predictors in a linguistically and culturally diverse cohort of people with HIV.

Objective: HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects Black and Latino people in the United States, yet there is a lack of research on predictors of neurocognitive outcomes in these groups. We examined neurocognitive performance and its key predictors across White, Black, and Latino people with HIV (PWH). Method: Participants included 586 PWH of White, Black, and Latino (English- and Spanish-speaking) background. Neurocognition was assessed via demographically-adjusted Fluid Cognition Composite T-scores from the NIH-Toolbox cognition battery, and individual tests comprising this composite. Predictors

Audit of child maltreatment medical assessments in a culturally diverse, metropolitan setting.

OBJECTIVE: Child maltreatment (CM) is a major public health problem globally. While there is evidence for the value of medical examination in the assessment of CM, little is known about the quality of clinical assessments for CM. South Western Sydney (SWS) has a large metropolitan population with many vulnerable subgroups. We aimed to describe acute presentations of CM in SWS over a 3-year period-with a focus on the quality of the clinical assessments. We wanted to determine whether the cases assessed fulfilled established minimum standards for clinical assessment of CM and whether the assessm

Bronchiectasis in a diverse US population: effects of ethnicity on etiology and sputum culture.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of patients with bronchiectasis have found that the cause is idiopathic in the majority of cases, but these studies were done in homogeneous populations. We hypothesized that the etiology of bronchiectasis can be determined in a higher percentage of patients in a diverse US population and will differ significantly based on ethnicity. METHODS: One hundred twelve patients with bronchiectasis confirmed by chest CT scan entered the study. Data from 106 patients were available for full evaluation. Clinical questionnaire, pulmonary function tests, sputum microbiology, l

Enrichment culture and molecular identification of diverse Bartonella species in stray dogs.

Using pre-enrichment culture in Bartonella alpha-Proteobacteria growth medium (BAPGM) followed by PCR amplification and DNA sequence identification that targeted a fragment of the citrate synthase gene (gltA), we provide evidence of common bartonella infections and diverse Bartonella species in the blood of stray dogs from Bangkok and Khon Kaen, Thailand. The overall prevalence of all Bartonella species was 31.3% (60/192), with 27.9% (31/111) and 35.8% (29/81) in the stray dogs from Bangkok and Khon Kaen, respectively. Phylogenetic analyzes of gltA identified eight species/genotypes of Bartone

Testing for apraxia in neurological patients: a descriptive study in two diverse cultures.

We constructed a detailed apraxia testing battery consisting of 55 items arranged in seven subparts and applied it to a convenience series of patients with a variety of neurological diseases and asymptomatic control subjects. A total of 173 subjects were evaluated in two culturally diverse settings: Rochester, MN, USA and in Istanbul, Turkey. There was little difference between performance scores in the two sites. The test could be completed within a reasonable time (5-10 min) in cases and in controls in both sites. Patients with Parkinson's disease performed just as well as controls but patie

Prospective Trial of a Passive Diversion Device to Reduce Blood Culture Contamination.

BACKGROUND: Blood culture contaminants can lead to inappropriate antibiotic use, prolonged length of stay, and additional hospital costs. Several devices have been developed to reduce the risk of blood culture contamination by diverting a portion of the initial blood sample from the blood culture bottle. We assessed the effectiveness of 1 blood diversion device (BDD) in a prospective trial performed at the 2 separate emergency departments (EDs) of an academic medical center. METHODS: A multiphase prospective crossover trial was performed with the BDD in use at 1 ED and standard equipment at t

Innovation for reducing blood culture contamination: initial specimen diversion technique.

We hypothesized that diversion of the first milliliter of venipuncture blood-the initial specimen diversion technique (ISDT)-would eliminate incompletely sterilized fragments of skin from the culture specimen and significantly reduce our blood culture contamination rate (R). We studied our hypothesis prospectively beginning with our control culture (C) definition: one venipuncture with two sequentially obtained specimens, 10 ml each, the first specimen (M1) for aerobic and the second (M2) for anaerobic media. The test ISDT culture (D) was identical, with the exception that each was preceded by

Bacterial diversity of an acid mine drainage beside the Xichú River (Mexico) accessed by culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches.

Xichú River is a Mexican river located in an environmental preservation area called Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. Around it, there are tons of abandoned mine residues that represent a serious environmental issue. Sediment samples of Xichú River, visibly contaminated by flows of an acid mine drainage, were collected to study their prokaryotic diversity. The study was based on both cultural and non-cultural approaches. The analysis of total 16S rRNA gene by MiSEQ sequencing allowed to identify 182 Operational Taxonomic Units. The community was dominated by Pseudomonadota, Bacteroidota, "Desulf

Impervious cover is associated with culture-based morphotype diversity in urban stormwater runoff.

UNLABELLED: Urban stormwater runoff transports diverse biological material into receiving waters, but whether storm-by-storm culture-based diversity is associated with simple environmental variables is not well quantified. This study examined whether culture-based morphotype diversity in urban runoff was associated with impervious cover percentages and basic weather variables. Runoff was sampled during 25 storms at three Chapel Hill, NC, catchments representing green, residential, and commercial urban land-use patterns to obtain 75 site-storm samples. For each sample, colonies grown on nutrien
