How did the languages we use today come about? One way to make this problem more tractable is to think about language, not as a single entity but as a compilation of properties. Biological evolution may have resulted in the creation of some properties of language. However, cultural evolution, which relies on changes introduced by successive generations of users and is quicker than biological evolution, may also be responsible for the introduction of properties into language. Although it is difficult to distinguish linguistic properties introduced through biological evolution from those introdu

The late Robert L. Carneiro was a prominent anthropologist who devoted his life to the study of political evolution and the evolution of complex societies. In the 1960s and 1970s, he and his colleagues created a cross-cultural dataset for their Scale Analysis project, collecting ethnographic and historical data on hundreds of cultural traits in more than a hundred societies worldwide. Although Carneiro presented the results of the project in several papers, the dataset itself has not yet been published. Here we present a digital version of two editions of the dataset, based on Carneiro's docum

Possession states are a well-known but a complex clinical aspect of transcultural psychiatry. How do young clinicians react when facing such symptoms? Starting from the case of a Somali patient suffering from possession states, treated in a transcultural consultation group, we will attempt to explain the cultural countertransference experienced by young clinicians who witnessed a trance. Using the Cultural Formulation Interview, we observed an evolution of the countertransference, and therefore an evolution of the symptom's understanding and of the patient's condition. This clinical case thus

Historical evolution and cross-cultural differences in spatial abilities are analyzed. Spatial abilities have been found to be significantly associated with the complexity of geographical conditions and survival demands. Although impaired spatial cognition is found in cases of, exclusively or predominantly, right hemisphere pathology, it is proposed that this asymmetry may depend on the degree of training in spatial abilities. It is further proposed that spatial cognition might have evolved in a parallel way with cultural evolution and environmental demands. Contemporary city humans might be u

Human preferences can shape the genetic evolution of other species via conservation practices, public health actions, and domestication. While the dynamics of domestication have been explored in depth through empirical and theoretical analyses, few studies have analyzed models for the coevolution of human cultural preferences with the genetics of a domesticate population. Humans shape the fitness landscape of domesticate populations both intentionally and unconsciously, by selecting for desirable traits and modifying environments; in turn, changes in domesticate phenotypes can affect the cultu

This conference paper synthesizes selected perspectives from the interdisciplinary lecture series "Il Cibo Siamo Noi: biologia, società, evoluzione" ("Food Is Who We Are: Biology, Society, Evolution"; April-May 2025), organized by the Istituto Italiano di Antropologia. Its aim is to examine human diet as a biocultural phenomenon, shaped by the long-term interaction between biological evolution, cultural practices, subsistence strategies, and changing food environments. Adopting a diachronic perspective, the paper considers how major dietary transitions have influenced human physiology, genetic

Humans tend to be prosocial towards in-group members, but often hostile towards out-group members. In line with ethology and evolutionary psychology, this study develops the concept of Durkheimian learning, meaning that groups actively integrate individuals by cultural transmission of behavioral norms. Yet humans might have genetically evolved predispositions for indoctrinability and constrained learning of what is adaptive for self-interested individuals living in groups. In-group prosociality might have coevolved with tendencies towards out-group rejection. The mechanism behind this outcome

Population connectivity shapes both genetic and cultural variation, including in learned vocal behaviors such as birdsong. Silvereyes (Zosterops lateralis) are well-known island colonizers, providing a useful model for examining how cultural evolution unfolds across populations with differing geographic isolation. We compared song dialects from 4 populations in South East Queensland: 2 mainland (Z. l. cornwalli) and 2 island populations (Z. l. chlorocephalus), for which patterns of genetic connectivity had previously been described. From field recordings, we constructed syllable repertoires an

A necessary prerequisite for the accumulation of beneficial knowledge, or 'cumulative cultural evolution', is the sharing of information via social learning. Yet little work in the field of cultural evolution has examined the mechanisms that support information sharing in the face of exploitative information free-riding and information hoarding. We ran a series of online interactive experiments (N = 716) combined with computational reinforcement and social learning models to test whether the mechanism of reputation-based partner choice can effectively support information sharing. Participants

In the realm of precision psychiatry of mood disorders, the evolution of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is gaining momentum, necessitating a personalized approach that also takes into account cultural aspects. This study underscores the importance of incorporating cultural factors into the dissemination and application of IPT in Asia. Through a comprehensive analysis of a case illuminating how cultural influences impact the onset and treatment outcomes of depression, we emphasize the critical need for culturally informed IPT practices in China. This personalized approach not only enhances t

There is a three-way fit between: humans' evolutionary ecology, which is deeply social; the turn towards fundamentally social understandings of human cognition; and the target article's reframing of egalitarianism in terms of process rather than outcome. Here, I outline this three-way fit, and how it might inform a rethinking of the idea of an "open" society.

This review article explores the concept of de-generacy as a fundamental yet underutilised principle in evolutionary anthropology. De-generacy, defined as structurally distinct elements performing overlapping functions, is widely recognised in genetics, neurobiology, and immunology but remains overlooked in cultural evolution. Distinguishing de-generacy from redundancy-where identical structures fulfill the same role-is crucial for understanding adaptability, resilience, and innovation in both biological and cultural systems. Despite its explanatory potential, de-generacy has been largely abse

Music sampling is a common practice among hip-hop and electronic producers that has played a critical role in the development of particular subgenres. Artists preferentially sample drum breaks, and previous studies have suggested that these may be culturally transmitted. With the advent of digital sampling technologies and social media the modes of cultural transmission may have shifted, and music communities may have become decoupled from geography. The aim of the current study was to determine whether drum breaks are culturally transmitted through musical collaboration networks, and to ident

After challenging the view that cultural processes mainly produce behavioral adaptations, we urge researchers to adopt a pluralistic view on Darwinian evolution by emphasizing the diversity and importance of evolutionary by-products and highlighting the heuristic merit of concepts such as behavioral spandrels and exaptations, particularly in the domain of cultural evolution in primates. We then use the concept of the "structure-function interface" and draw from our own research on macaques to provide two examples of possible behavioral adaptations and their corresponding by-products, both of w

The concept of social tinkering is useful, but insufficient to explain the evolution of human cultural complexity due to its overemphasis on cooperative interactions. The importance of conflict, violence, and inequality in the evolution of complex cultures complicates the social tinkering hypothesis. Who gets to tinker, and what determines which products of that tinkering are selected?

"What is life?" and Erwin Schrödinger's answer, "negative entropy", inspired researchers in the 20th century to unite physics, chemistry, and physiology into a new synthesis that many believe to be an important foundation for life science today. Decades after Schrödinger, life scientists are still fascinated by the riddle that entropy can only accumulate in physical systems, which often leads to biological deterioration and death, but life finds ways to persist and prevail. So to say, life "negates" entropy. Can this fascination and research concept be broadened even further to human culture?

Intelligent machines have the potential to uncover problem-solving strategies beyond human discovery. Emerging evidence from competitive gameplay, such as Go and chess, demonstrates that AI systems are evolving from mere tools to sources of cultural innovation adopted by humans. However, the conditions under which intelligent machines transition from tools to drivers of persistent cultural change remain unclear. We identify three key dimensions that modulate machine influence on human problem-solving: the discovered strategies must be non-trivial, learnable, and offer a clear advantage. Using

People and cultures differ in the extent to which they view the world as a zero-sum environment (where one person's gain is another's loss) or a positive-sum environment (where certain actions can benefit everyone). These beliefs shape individuals' willingness to work, invest, collaborate, or show hostility toward out-groups, and accept or reject various social policies. We model dyadic interactions in a heterogeneous population where individuals biased toward a zero-sum worldview are more likely to invest in competition, while those biased toward a positive-sum worldview are more likely to in

Chater and Christiansen claim that humans' cultural systems arise in an unplanned manner via social tinkering, a process that is nearsighted and directed. However, cultural change can be planned and farsighted, arbitrary and undirected, or anywhere in between. Focusing primarily on social tinkering may cause other important sources of cultural change to be overlooked.

Neutral evolution assumes that there are no selective forces distinguishing different variants in a population. Despite this striking assumption, many recent studies have sought to assess whether neutrality can provide a good description of different episodes of cultural change. One approach has been to test whether neutral predictions are consistent with observed progeny distributions, recording the number of variants that have produced a given number of new instances within a specified time interval: a classic example is the distribution of baby names. Using an overlapping generations model,
