Sexually Transmitted Infection Considerations for Transgender and Gender Expansive Persons.

Transgender and gender expansive persons (TGE) are at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) compared with other demographic groups and face barriers to health care access that may limit their ability to obtain testing and treatment. Herein, we highlight unique, yet vital, aspects of STI screening and treatment in TGE persons utilizing a gender-affirming care approach, including best practices for gender-inclusive care and special considerations for TGE persons who have undergone gender-affirming hormone therapy and/or surgery. Opportunities exist to improve sexual health in

Perioperative Risk Factors and Safety Strategies for Patients With Tattoos and Piercings.

The increasing prevalence of body modifications, such as tattoos and piercings, may present unique perioperative challenges due to the chemical composition of tattoo inks, the presence of metallic particles, and the anatomical location of piercings. Considerations for this patient population include the risk of infection, unintentional burns from medical devices, and hypersensitivity reactions; airway management; integumentary and vascular access; radiological examinations; patient preferences and cultural differences; and ensuring effective perioperative communication and respect. Pastoral care and counseling with the "un-homeless homeless": understanding cultures of homelessness.

This article presents a subset of findings from a larger study exploring the lived experiences of 16 former residents of a 90-day emergency family shelter program in Los Angeles County. Interpretative phenomenological analysis serves as a qualitative method for understanding the cultural uniqueness of the "un-homeless homeless." The findings offer implications for culturally competent pastoral care and counseling in the context of family homelessness and attend to both the process and content of caregiving.

Death and dying in Ghana: Implications for palliative and end-of-life care.

In Ghana, death and dying are not simply biomedical endpoints but are deeply rooted in cultural, spiritual, and communal ideologies. These beliefs shape how individuals and families perceive terminal illness, respond to end-of-life (EoL) trajectories, and interact with palliative care (PC) services. Unlike Western medical models that prioritize institutionalized and medicalized death, the Ghanaian perspective is influenced by communalism, ancestral continuity, and religious doctrines that emphasize divine healing and spiritual deliverance. This commentary examines how Ghanaian cultural norms,

Mental Health Needs of Asian American Older Adults: Bridging the Inequity Gap.

The mental health needs of Asian American older adults are complex and multifaceted. Despite their rich diversity, Asian American older adults face significant challenges, including mental health stigma, cultural stress, limited English proficiency, and historical trauma. In addition, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic reignited preexisting anti-Asian attitudes of hostility, discrimination, blame, and scapegoating. The historical context of Asian immigration to the United States, impact of race-based discrimination, and recent resurgence of anti-Asian hate crimes impact mental health in Asi

Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias in the Deaf Community: A Scoping Review.

Despite Alzheimer disease and related dementias/disorders (ADRD) being a substantial public health concern, the Deaf community remains underrepresented in ADRD research. We examined the extent and nature of existing literature on ADRD in the Deaf community. We conducted a scoping review following Arksey and O'Malley's framework, adhering to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses. We searched 7 databases for peer-reviewed studies published in English, with no restrictions on publication date or study design. Inclusion studies addressed ADRD with

[Cultural Care in Nursing Practice].

In this paper, how cultural care may be operationalized in clinical nursing practice in Taiwan is examined by integrating the Giger-Davidhizar transcultural assessment model with the Narayan cultural assessment framework, with Leininger's Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality serving as the central theoretical framework. Using a case exemplar (a Taiwanese woman living with type 2 diabetes), we examine the influence on health behaviors and treatment decisions of multiple cultural factors, including education, economic conditions, politico-legal context, biological characteristics,

Culturally Sensitive and Inclusive IBD Care.

As the prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) increases within historically disadvantaged communities, it is imperative to better understand how intersectionality-defined as the complex, cumulative way in which the effects of multiple forms of discrimination (such as racism, sexism, and classism)-intersects and social determinants of health influence the patient's experiences within the medical system when navigating their disease. Culturally sensitive care is characterized by the ability to deliver patient-centered care that recognizes how the intersectionality of an individual's iden

Bridging the Gap of Mental Health Inequalities in the Transgender Population: The Role of Nursing Education.

The transgender population experience mental health disparities as a result of numerous environmental, sociocultural and personal factors. Health care-related discrimination plays an unfortunate role in these disparities. The institutional and informational erasure of transgender individuals in health care actively contributes to this discrimination. The lack of preparation of health care professionals to care for this population is a significant factor. There is an absence of education on transgender topics in nursing school and a lack of nursing research on this population. An awareness thro

General practitioner experiences in delivering early medical abortion services to women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds: A qualitative-descriptive study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: General practitioners (GPs) are ideally placed to deliver early medical abortion (EMA), yet little is known about how GPs deliver this care to women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. We explored GP experiences in providing EMA to women from CALD backgrounds and their recommendations for service improvements. METHOD: This was a qualitative study involving telephone interviews with 18 Australian GPs who provide EMA to women from CALD backgrounds. Data were thematically analysed using the Capability, Opportunity and Motivation Behaviour mod

Care of the Transgender Patient.

Transgender persons are a diverse group whose gender identity differs from their sex recorded at birth. Some choose to undergo medical treatment to align their physical appearance with their gender identity. Barriers to accessing appropriate and culturally competent care contribute to health disparities in transgender persons, such as increased rates of certain types of cancer, substance abuse, mental health conditions, infections, and chronic diseases. Thus, it is important that clinicians understand the specific medical issues that are relevant to this population.

Identifying US veterans who access services from health care for the homeless clinics.

Research on veterans experiencing homelessness is predominantly focused on the US Department of Veterans Affairs setting, despite the fact that substantial numbers receive services from Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) clinics. We explored how HCH clinics identified veteran patients through a survey of administrators (49% response rate). The majority (98%) identified veterans but used varied language and approaches. Implementing a streamlined, culturally competent identification process is vital to collecting accurate data, connecting veterans with benefits, and informing treatment plans.

Understanding Muslim patients: cross-cultural dental hygiene care.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare providers who understand the basic pillars of Islamic beliefs and common religious practices can apply these concepts, anticipate the needs of the Muslim patient and family, and attract Muslim patients to the practice. OBJECTIVE: Cross cultural knowledge can motivate dental hygienists to adopt culturally acceptable behaviors, strengthen patient-provider relationships and optimize therapeutic outcomes. Trends in Muslim population growth, Islamic history and beliefs, modesty practices, healthcare beliefs, contraception, childbearing, childrearing, pilgrimage, dietary prac

Practicing Upstream: Race-Based Trauma Care Training For Veteran's Health Administration Nurse Practitioners.

Problem: The Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) employed by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) lack race-based trauma training for Veterans that have experienced psychological, physiological, and emotional trauma. The VHA is responsible for the health of this culturally diverse patient population with complex health conditions. APRNs without prior military experience may have trouble obtaining an accurate history and physical exam due to their inexperience with the military's cross-cultural environment. Making assumptions, making space: an anthropological critique of cultural competency and its relevance to queer patients.

Despite increased attention to "culturally competent" practice with diverse populations, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people remain relatively invisible within medicine and other health professions. Health care providers (HCPs) frequently dismiss sexual and gender identity as irrelevant to care. This study uses interviews with 24 physicians and 38 LGBTQ-identified women to explore how routine practices in health care can perpetuate or challenge the marginalization of LGBTQ women. While physicians avoid making assumptions to reduce judgment, a "neutral" stance reinforc
