Cunninghamella bertholletiae infection (mucormycosis) in a patient with acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia.

Cunninghamella spp. are unusual opportunistic pathogens that have been identified with increased frequency in immunocompromised patients. Clinical infection by this fungus is almost always devastating and usually fatal. Infections with this group of organisms have been seen most frequently in patients with hematological malignancy. Here we report the case of a patient with acute leukemia who developed multiorganic failure as a consequence of hematological dissemination by Cunninghamella bertholletiae. The case highlights the mortality associated with this fungal infection in immunocompromised

Cunninghamella bertholletiae: an uncommon agent of opportunistic fungal infection. Case report and review.

Cunninghamella bertholletiae is a fungus of the Zygomycetes class, Mucorales order. Only very few cases of disseminated infection have been reported. We observed a new case in a 19 years old man with severe aplastic anemia, due to pulmonary primoinfection and hematologic dissemination. This aplastic anemia failed to respond first to an antithymocyte globulin and steroid treatment and then to cyclosporine A. Deferoxamine was infused weekly to prevent iron overload. During a second antithymocyte globulin and steroid treatment, the patient developed bilateral pneumonia. Culture of the broncho-alv

An autopsy case of disseminated Cunninghamella bertholletiae infection in an immunocompetent patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Recently, deaths due to mucormycosis in immunocompromised hosts have increased; however, the clinical and pathological features of mucormycosis are not fully understood, especially in view of the associated high mortality and rare incidence in immunocompetent patients. CASE PRESENTATION: We have described a rare autopsy case of a 67-year-old Japanese man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who contracted mucormycosis. He had not been on any immunosuppressants, and his immune functions were intact. Since 3 days prior to admission to our hospital, he had experienced progressi

Cunninghamella bertholletiae infection in children: review and report of 2 cases with disseminated infection.

Mucormycosis is an emerging fungal infection affecting mainly immunosuppressed hosts. Cunninghamella bertholletiae causes the highest mortality among all mucormycetes. Infection by C. bertholletiae has rarely been reported in children. We present 2 children with acute leukemia and disseminated infection by C. bertholletiae, and review the relevant literature.

Cunninghamella bertholletiae and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia as a fatal complication of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

A unique patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia died with pneumonia caused by both Cunninghamella bertholletiae and Pneumocystis carinii. In tissue sections, the hyphae of C bertholletiae were twisted and ribbon-like, but were smaller than those typical for zygomycetes, displayed more than occasional septa, and exhibited Y branching, making histologic distinction from Aspergillus sp difficult.

Case of endobronchial metastasis from breast cancer accompanied with Cunninghamella bertholletiae tracheobronchial mycetoma.

Cunninghamella is a member of the class Zygomycetes. Cunninghamella species include ubiquitous filamentous fungi; infections caused by Cunninghamella species are less frequent but have higher mortality rates than infections caused by Mucorales group members such as Rhizopus and Mucor. Herein, we reported a rare fatal case of endobronchial metastasis from breast cancer accompanied with Cunninghamella bertholletiae tracheobronchial mycetoma. A 73-year-old female with a history of right-sided breast cancer who had undergone mastectomy 11 years previously and had no recurrence presented to our eme

Pulmonary mucormycosis (Cunninghamella bertholletiae) with cavitation diagnosed using ultra-thin fibre-optic bronchoscopy.

Recently, ultra-thin bronchoscopy has made it possible to observe smaller bronchi not visualized using standard techniques. We describe a case of pulmonary mucormycosis with cavitation, diagnosed using an ultra-thin bronchoscope. A 15-year-old girl with acute myeloid leukaemia had taken oral prednisolone, 60 mg/day, for graft versus host disease after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. She was admitted to our hospital with fever and a large cavitary lesion in the right hilum. Using an ultra-thin bronchoscope, the interior of the cavity in the superior segment of the right lower lobe was

Peritonitis due to Cunninghamella bertholletiae in a patient undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis due to fungi of the class Zygomycetes occurs very rarely. A case of fungal continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis peritonitis due to Cunninghamella bertholletiae is reported in a 39-year-old Aboriginal woman with end-stage renal failure and diabetes mellitus. This isolate was found to be resistant in vitro to amphotericin B, 5-fluorocytosine, fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole and voriconazole. However, this patient was successfully treated with voriconazole and removal of the Tenckhoff dialysis catheter. Zygomycoses are an emerging threat amo

Microbial models of mammalian metabolism. Furosemide glucoside formation using the fungus Cunninghamella elegans.

The diuretic furosemide (Lasix) was metabolized by the fungus Cunninghamella elegans (ATCC 36112) to the phase II conjugate, furosemide acyl glucoside. This metabolite was isolated following semipreparative scale incubations of C. elegans involving glucose nutrient dosing, and was characterized by NMR spectroscopy (1H and 1H/1H correlated), MS (FAB), UV, HPLC with fluorescence detection, and enzymatic treatments. The aglycone fragment of the conjugate was characterized as furosemide by treatment of the metabolite with sodium hydroxide, whereas the sugar part was identified as glucose by cleava

[Clinical features of children with Cunninghamella spp. infection: a case report and literature review].

We report a case of mucormycosis induced by Cunninghamella spp. infection in a ten-year-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, who developed fever and respiratory symptoms after chemotherapy and was diagnosed with invasive fungal disease. Peripheral blood DNA sequences were analyzed using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), and by comparison with the Pathogens Metagenomics Database (PMDB), we identified Cunninghamella spp. with sequence number 514 as the pathogen. The patient was treated with amphotericin B combined with posaconazole and showed a favorable response. We searched

Infections due to Cunninghamella bertholletiae in patients with cancer: report of three cases and review.

Limited information is available regarding the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of infection with Cunninghamella bertholletiae. In this report, we describe the clinical courses of three patients with leukemia and fatal C. bertholletiae infection and review the literature. In all patients, the infection developed in the setting of severe neutropenia following high doses of cytotoxic chemotherapy. Clinical presentation always consisted of fever and pneumonia and could be associated with dissemination to numerous organs. The course of infection was very rapid, and the diagnosis was made a

Disseminated Cunninghamella spp. Endocarditis in a Beta-Thalassemia Patient after Asymptomatic COVID-19 Infection.

Cunninghamella spp. is a group of fungi belonging to the Mucorales order. Cases of fungal endocarditis are sporadic, but more frequent in immunocompromised patients. COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 Infection Disease 2019) infections, prematurity, deferoxamine treatment, iron overload, neutropenia, diabetes, and malignant hemopathies proved to be risk factors for mucormycosis. We present the case of a 7-year-old boy who was treated every three weeks with blood transfusion for major beta-thalassemia, receiving deferoxamine for secondary hemochromatosis. After two weeks with nonspecific respiratory and dige
