Esophageal function testing: Billing and coding update.

Esophageal function testing is being increasingly utilized in diagnosis and management of esophageal disorders. There have been several recent technological advances in the field to allow practitioners the ability to more accurately assess and treat such conditions, but there has been a relative lack of education in the literature regarding the associated Common Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes and methods of reimbursement. This review, commissioned and supported by the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society Council, aims to summarize each of the CPT codes for esophageal functio

Operatively Treated Talus Fractures: Complications and Survivorship in a Large Patient Sample.

Talus fractures are relatively uncommon; however, the sequelae of talus fractures can cause significant morbidity. Although avascular necrosis has been a consistently reported complication, the reported rates of subsequent arthrodesis have varied widely. The purpose of the present study was to report the complications in a large patient sample of operatively treated talus fractures and to describe the survivorship of open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of the talus. Patients undergoing talus ORIF for closed or open fractures from 2007 to 2011 were identified in the United Healthcare System

National standards for asthma self-management education.

BACKGROUND: Asthma education reimbursement continues to be an issue in the United States. Among the greatest barriers is the lack of a standardized curriculum for asthma self-management education recognized by a physician society, non-physician health care professional society or association, or other appropriate source. The applicable Current Procedural Terminology codes for self-management education and training are 98960 through 98962, stating that "if a practitioner has created a training curriculum for educating patients on management of their medical condition, he or she may employ a non

Identification of pregnancies and infants within a US commercial healthcare administrative claims database.

PURPOSE: Health care insurance claims databases are becoming a more common data source for studies of medication safety during pregnancy. While pregnancies have historically been identified in such databases by pregnancy outcomes, International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) Z3A codes denoting weeks of gestation provide more granular information on pregnancies and pregnancy periods (i.e., start and end dates). The purpose of this study was to develop a process that uses Z3A codes to identify pregnancies, pregnancy periods, and links infants within a
