OBJECTIVES: To explore parents' experiences of seeking health care for their children and instead being accused by healthcare professionals of Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (SBS/AHT), being reported to Social Services, undergoing judiciary processing, and the impact of these events on family (dis)integration.
METHODS: Design: A qualitative study based on qualitative content analysis. Participants: Twelve parents in Sweden, mothers and fathers, seeking health care for their infants, encountering allegations of SBS/AHT, losing custody of their infants, and being subjected to a judici

Effective myocardial protection and perfusion strategies during minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (Mini-MV) have evolved over the last decade. Our institutional approach for right-sided Mini-MV has been standardized over the last 15 years in more than 4,500 cases. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is usually instituted by right-sided femoral arterial and venous cannulation with additional cannulation of the right jugular vein in patients with a body weight greater than 75 kg or when a concomitant tricuspid valve (TV) procedure and/or atrial septal defect closure is performed. A single dosage

Despite falling crime rates in England and Wales over the past 20 years, the number of prisoners has doubled. People over the age of 50 constitute the fastest growing section of the prison population, and increasing numbers of older prisoners are dying in custody. This article discusses some of the issues raised by these changing demographics and draws on preliminary findings from a study underway in North West England. It describes the context behind the rise in the numbers of older prisoners; explores the particular needs of this growing population; and discusses some of the practical and em

BACKGROUND: Aboriginal Australians are more likely than other Australians to cycle in and out of prison on remand or by serving multiple short sentences-a form of serial incarceration and institutionalisation. This cycle contributes to the over-representation of Aboriginal Australians in prison and higher rates of recidivism. Our research examined how primary health care can better meet the health care and social support needs of Aboriginal Australians transitioning from prison to the community.
METHODS: Purposive sampling was used to identify 30 interviewees. Twelve interviews were with Abor

BACKGROUND: Specialised forensic mental health provision for young people with mental disorders and high-risk behaviours has developed significantly in the UK. Despite this, research on the young people within secure settings remains limited. Adolescents in secure settings exhibit higher levels of mental disorders and have complex needs. This study aims to compare the demographic characteristics of patients discharged from an adolescent medium secure unit (AMSU) to different discharge destinations: community, another hospital, or custodial setting.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted

Deaths in custodial settings mark a critical intersection of human rights, public health, and state accountability and serve as a key indicator of systemic deficiencies within correctional institutions. Evidence consistently shows that suicide is the leading cause of death in custody, especially during the early detention period. This trend reflects increased psychological vulnerability, pre-existing mental health issues, and limited access to specialized care. Natural causes - such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, infections, and complications from chronic illnesses - also make up

BACKGROUND: Across much of the developed world, the number of older people in custody has been increasing, which presents challenges for correctional systems due to the complex social, medical and mental health needs of this subgroup, especially those living with dementia. The present study therefore aimed to increase insight into the extent to which older people in custody are (a) potentially living with dementia and (b) receiving appropriate supports/services (particularly, with respect to community reintegration).
RESULTS: Cross-sectional data were drawn from a sample of 29 older people in

Objectives: To assess the existence of prison and jail policies and practices that allow incarcerated women to breastfeed while in custody, and prevalence of women in custody who pumped human milk for their infants. Methods: We surveyed 22 state prison systems and 6 county jails from 2016 to 2017 about policies related to breastfeeding and other programs for pregnant and parenting women in custody. In addition, 11 prisons and 5 jails reported 6 months of monthly, prospective data on the number of women pumping human milk, as well as information on placement of infants born to women in custody.

OBJECTIVE: Incarcerated patients are a vulnerable population and little is known regarding the epidemiology of burn injury and subsequent outcomes. This study utilizes a national database to assess disparities in care affecting this understudied population.
METHODS: The National Burn Repository was queried for adult patients discharged into custody. Patients discharged to jail were compared to those with other dispositions. Additional analysis of the incarcerated patients compared those injured while in custody to those injured prior to incarceration.
RESULTS: Between 2002-2011, 809 patients

INTRODUCTION: We have been funded to examine post-incarceration health and social outcomes for all people incarcerated in New South Wales, Australia, 2000-2022; assess treatment and services for drug dependence and serious mental illness; and project the impact of expanding intervention coverage. We will use a linked cohort, the Prison Outcomes STudy (POST), which we also describe.
METHODS: The POST cohort was established using linked administrative data for all adults (≥ 18 years) admitted to full-time custody in New South Wales, 2000-2022. Custody records were probabilistically linked to 18

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Crystal methamphetamine (CM) is associated with a range of physical and mental health harms and may be of particular concern among young people at risk of early, problematic substance use, such as those in contact with the criminal justice system. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and correlates of regular (i.e. at least weekly) CM use among young people preceding entry into custody.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were collected from 207 participants aged 14-18 years as part of the 2015 Young People in Custody Health Survey, a cross-sectional survey of youth in c

The continuity of essential medications is a fundamental component of clinical governance within custodial healthcare. National standards, including the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Professional Guidance on the Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines1 and the College of Policing's 2024 Authorised Professional Practice (APP) for Custody,2 emphasise the importance of maintaining prescribed treatments to prevent avoidable clinical deterioration. Yet hormone replacement therapy (HRT) frequently remains excluded from rapid medicines continuity pathways, resulting in abrupt interruption for wome

BACKGROUND: Persons in ICE detention represent a population about whom limited health-related data is available in the literature. Since ICE detention is generally brief, facilitating linkage to care (FLC) for detainees with chronic diseases, including HIV-positive detainees, is challenging, yet critical to encourage continued treatment beyond custody. Between 2015 and 2017, IHSC-staffed facilities implemented intensive training related to HIV care and FLC and increased clinical oversight and consultations. This study examined the impact of these changes in relation to FLC.

BACKGROUND: Children in custodial settings are a vulnerable group. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic there were concerns about the safety of children in these settings. COVID-19 has had an impact on everyone but given the vulnerability of children in custody, there were concerns about the impact of COVID-19 restrictions. All custody settings for children are independently inspected and this research aimed to analyse data from inspection reports. Twenty-six inspection reports undertaken between March 2020 and October 2021 were analysed to understand the impact of COVID-19 on delivery of usual care

People with mental disorders can receive treatment in the community. Some, however, fall out of services and into the criminal justice system, running the risk of imprisonment and a deteriorating mental health cycle. This editorial describes Mental Health Treatment Requirements (MHTRs), that is court-imposed sentences that enable people in the UK to access treatment in the community and divert them from short custodial sentences. MHTRs have proven successful for people with primary care mental health needs. It remains difficult to secure these sentences for people with secondary care mental he

PURPOSE: Accessible mental health and substance use services are key supports for people released from custody. The purpose of this paper is to describe the primary changes and challenges to mental health and substance use service provision early in the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario, Canada, with a specific focus on people released from custody and the service providers who supported them during this transition.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The authors conducted a cross-sectional survey of service providers who provide mental health and substance use services and support criminal-legal-involve

Experiences of healthcare services are an important indicator of quality and health system improvement. In correctional facilities, structural and contextual factors affect experiences of healthcare services and processes for voicing these experiences. This study explores barriers and opportunities for people in custody to voice their experiences of healthcare services in custody. We held four focus groups and one interview with people living in the community who had accessed, or tried to access, healthcare services while incarcerated in a provincial correctional facility in Ontario, Canada in

The prevalence of serious mental illness in correctional facilities is approximately eight times higher than in the general population. The difficulties experienced by people with serious mental illness and correctional involvement are often compounded by substance abuse, homelessness, lack of support and stigma. While psychiatric treatment is provided in custody, rapid access to mental health services upon release is essential to ensure continuity of prescribed medications, monitoring and support in areas such as finances and housing. However, there are barriers to accessing services upon rel

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated mothers are a marginalised group who experience substantial health and social disadvantage and routinely face disruption of family relationships, including loss of custody of their children. To support the parenting role, mothers and children's units (M&Cs) operate in 97 jurisdictions internationally with approximately 19 000 children reported to be residing with their mothers in custody-based settings.
AIM: This rapid review aims to describe the existing evidence regarding the models of service delivery for, and key components of, custodial M&Cs.
