Protective immunity against cutaneous leishmaniasis is dependent on the induction of Th1/Tc1 immune responses resulting in efficient parasite elimination. In this review, the mechanisms leading to protection are discussed with special focus on the role of Leishmania major-infected dendritic cells (DC) in induction of Th1-dependent immunity. Murine strain-dependent differences between DC derived from Leishmania-susceptible as compared to resistant mice are highlighted.

BACKGROUND: Chemoneurolysis is used to treat focal spasticity in patients with upper motor neuron syndrome.
CASE REPORT: Neurolytic substances (phenol/alcohol) injected nearby/in the main trunk of peripheral nerves can cause not only motor but also cutaneous nerves destruction. The latter is thought to be responsible for considerable side effects such as dysesthesia and paresthesia. During injections, targeting the primary motor branches originating from the main trunk while sparing cutaneous nerves will result in decrease/elimination of these side effects and better clinical improvement.

Elastosis perforans serpiginosa (EPS) is a cutaneous connective tissue disorder featuring transepidermal elimination of altered elastic tissue. Morphologically and histologically EPS presents characteristic patterns; the case reported herein classically illustrates these patterns. In approximately one-fourth of reported cases, EPS has been associated with systemic connective tissue disorders and may thus be a useful clue in the early recognition of diseases such as Down's syndrome or pseudoxanthoma elasticum.

Cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis diagnosed at the laboratory of Department of Hygiene of the University of Catania (Italy), from 1998-2007 were evaluated. Specifically, demographic and personal data, area of origin and temporal trend of the 97 cases confirmed by microscopy in this 10-year period were examined. Injectable cutaneous microimplants may occasionally cause either persistent local irritation or late skin reactions in the form of foreign body granulomas at the injected areas. Permanent elimination of the latter is not easily achieved. The skin of a female patient developed nodules along the treated sites on her face a few months following the last session of intracutaneous injections. Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, also known as mycosis fungoides, is a malignancy of the T helper (CD4+) cells. Diagnosis is difficult early in the course of this disease because it mimics several benign skin disorders, including eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis. Surgeons favoring fusion believe that removal of the disk alone can result in painful spondylosis, eventually requiring fusion. Surgeons not favoring fusion eliminate painful neuralgia from damage to the anterior femoral cutaneous nerve as well as painful donor site scars. Also eliminated are painful pseudarthrosis and degenerative problems. Graft collapse and displacement are uncommon if three-sided iliac grafts are used. We report two newborns with a widespread cutaneous eruption consisting of discrete papules which evolved into vesicles, pustules, crusts, and ulcers. These healed over a 2-week period with scarring. Histopathology showed three main features--histiocytic granulomas, neutrophilic infiltration, and transepidermal elimination of degenerated collagen and debris through hair follicles. Both patients had congenital immunodeficiency. This skin condition of the newborn, with distinct clinical and histopathologic features, is a manifestation of immunodeficiency that has not been previously described.

Cow's milk protein allergy affects gastrointestinal morphology and function. The clinical symptoms depend on the localisation in the gut and on the type of the allergic reaction. In some patients cutaneous, respiratory and even urinary symptoms may also be present. As the condition is almost limited to the first year of life, transitory elimination of cow's milk from the diet is the treatment of choice. A number of patients with intractable diarrhoea suffers from undiagnosed cow's milk protein allergy.

: Carmine is a widely used "natural" food additive that has been reported to provoke both an immediate hypersensitivity and a delayed systemic response with cutaneous expression. Systemic contact dermatitis describes the hypersensitivity reaction following systemic re-exposure of the inciting allergen in previously sensitized individuals. In individuals with recalcitrant dermatitis and a positive carmine intolerance history and/or patch test, it is important to consider a trial topical and dietary elimination of carmine-associated products and foods.
