The primary treatment of the common malignancy squamous cell carcinoma is surgical removal. In this process, sufficient tissue removal is balanced against unnecessary mutilation. We recently presented a remote photoplethysmography algorithm, which revealed significant differences between processed video recordings of cancer biopsy areas and surrounding tissue. The aim of this study was to investigate whether spatial analyses of photoplethysmography data correlate with post-excision pathological analyses and thus have potential to assist in tumour delineation. Based on high speed video recordin

Although initial surgical excision cures 95% of patients, a minority of cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCCs) are judged to be unresectable, either locally advanced or with unresectable regional lymph nodes or distant metastases. These patients are offered systemic treatments. Response rate to chemotherapy is relatively low and not durable, as well as the results obtained with epidermal growth factor inhibitors (EGFRi). Like other cutaneous tumors, cSCCs have high immunogenicity, driven by the high mutational burden, the ultraviolet signature, and the overexpressed tumor antigens. Two che

BACKGROUND: Knowledge regarding the inpatient burden of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To provide nationally representative estimates for hospitalization characteristics due to cSCC and determine predictors for increased length of stay (LOS) and cost of care.
METHODS/MATERIALS: A retrospective cohort study of the 2009 to 2015 National Inpatient Sample. Weighted multivariate logistic/linear regression models were created to evaluate sociodemographic factors associated with cSCC hospitalization and to assess characteristics associated with cost of care and LOS.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneus squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common type of nonmelanoma skin cancer. SCC is a malignant neoplasm of the skin characterized by aberrant proliferation of keratinocytes.
PRESENTATION CASE: We report multidisciplinary surgical management of a 36-year-old male who presented with a huge cutaneous protruding tumor of the cervicothoracic wall. Clinically, he presented with a growing mass on the anterior cervicothoracic wall 3 years ago. Microscopic examination revealed SCC. He underwent complete excision of the lesion. The patient neglected attending our onc

BACKGROUND: Hydroxyurea (HU) is a non-alkylating antineoplastic agent that is active in the S-phase of the cell cycle and inhibits the enzyme ribonucleoside reductase. HU is currently used to treat leukemia, sickle cell anemia, psoriasis, and chronic myeloproliferative disorders. Although HU is easy to use and effective and has high tolerance, there have been numerous reports of cutaneous complications during long-term therapy with HU.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a 67-year-old woman on long-term HU therapy for primary myelofibrosis who developed concurrent skin lesions during treatment. The first

BACKGROUND: While progress has been made in defining the clinical and histopathologic features of high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (HRcSCC), optimal staging guidelines remain elusive.
OBJECTIVE: We seek to guide clinical practice regarding nodal staging options for patients with HRcSCC via review of evolving definitions of HRcSCC, nodal staging options, and how nodal staging may impact treatment and affect outcomes.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of the published peer-reviewed literature regarding risk stratification, nodal staging, and treatment and outcomes for patient

Introduction. It is rare for actinic or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in situ to metastasize. Case Presentation. A 67-year-old male had a significant medical history including severe psoriatic arthritis treated with UVB, methotrexate, and rapamycin. He had twenty-five different skin excisions of actinic keratosis four of which were invasive SCC. Our patient developed shortness of breath necessitating a visit to the emergency department. A CT scan of his chest revealed a mass in the right lower lung. A subsequent biopsy of the mass revealed well-differentiated SCC. He underwent thoracoscopic su

Sporadic subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) in an elderly man does not fit a typical demographic for the disease process. Using the McLean's criteria we were able to establish a temporal relationship between the patient's diagnosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and his dermatosis, both of which responded to cytotoxic chemotherapy. The clinical presentation and progression of the clinical illness is supportive of a very unusual and not previously reported paraneoplastic SCLE secondary to esophageal SCC.

Laboratory and epidemiologic studies suggest a protective effect of tea consumption on risk of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We designed a case-control study to examine the association between putative protective exposures, including tea consumption, and SCC risk using a large health maintenance organization population. Cases (n=415) were defined as Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) members with a pathology-verified SCC in 2004 and controls (n=415) were age-, gender-, and race-matched members with no previous history of skin cancer. Tea consumption and SCC risk factors we

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) along with basal cell carcinoma (BCC), collectively known as Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC), are the most common cancers in the United States. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is less common than BCC, but is known to be more aggressive with a higher mortality rate. Squamous cell carcinoma of the external auditory canal (EAC) is rare when compared to SCC on other cutaneous sites. Due to the rarity of SCC originating in the EAC, there is currently no universal staging system, making it difficult to analyze data and form a treatment strategy. This is a c

Carcinogenesis is a multi-step process resulting from the accumulation of genetic mutations and subsequently leading to dysregulated genes, but the number and identity of differentially expressed genes in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is unknown at present. In order to identify dysregulated genes, we examined the relative mRNA expression present in cutaneous SCC and its precursor lesion actinic keratosis (AK) by comparison to normal skin. Snap frozen biopsies from 20 specimens of normal skin, 10 AK, and 10 cutaneous SCC were examined. Total-RNA was extracted, reversely transcribed, a

Cutaneous metastases of vulvar carcinoma are extremely rare and have been reported in six patients so far. Our patient, who is the seventh one, is a 38-year-old woman with a history of diabetes mellitus. After detecting stage III squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva, she underwent radical vulvectomy and bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy. She received 6000 cGy external beam radiation for positive margins. Six months later, she came back with multiple advanced skin lesions. Biopsy was performed and lesions were confirmed as cutaneous metastases. For her palliation, some chemotherapy drugs were

The first case of primary cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) to cause zosteriform and epidermotropic metastasis to skin is reported. The patient is a 72-year-old Japanese woman. A cutaneous SCC appeared on the lateral side of her right knee and was removed. After dissection of the right inguinal lymph nodes, which revealed metastases, and irradiation of the right inguinal region, the patient presented with slightly pruritic and painful erythematous papules on the right hip and small brownish papules and vesicles with crusts on the anterior side of the right thigh. The eruptions were in a

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with histologically contiguous actinic keratosis has long been thought of as a tumor with minimal risk for metastasis. The objective of this study was to determine if contiguous actinic keratosis is present in the original tumors of metastatic cutaneous SCC and to describe the histologic features of these tumors.
METHODS: The primary lesions of 22 patients with metastatic cutaneous SCC were examined using light microscopy.
RESULTS: Contiguous actinic keratosis was present histologically in 44% of the original lesions of cutaneous SCC that metastasize

Metastasis to the skin occurs rarely, regardless of the nature of the primary systemic neoplasm. Although carcinoma of the cervix is the fourth most common malignancy in women, cutaneous involvement originating from cervical cancer is particularly unusual, even in the terminal stages of disease. Only 22 cases, including this one, are clearly documented in the literature. The main sites of the cutaneous metastases in these cases were the abdominal wall or lower extremity. However, we describe a 41-year-old woman with cervical cancer who developed metastatic nodules on the upper back. The skin o

BACKGROUND: The recommended treatments for advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, anti-EGFR) and advanced basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (vismodegib and sonidegib) have many side effects. Nivolumab (anti-PD1 antibody) may be used as second-line therapy in SCC of the head and neck. We report the case of a patient with advanced SCC and BCC which regressed under pembrolizumab.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 69-year-old man consulted for a large vertex SCC measuring 15cm in diameter. He also had BCC on the left nostril and sternal Bowen disease. Radiological assessment revealed
