Examination of the gamma equilibrium point hypothesis when applied to single degree of freedom movements performed with different inertial loads.

One of the theories of human motor control is the gamma Equilibrium Point Hypothesis. It is an attractive theory since it offers an easy control scheme where the planned trajectory shifts monotionically from an initial to a final equilibrium state. The feasibility of this model was tested by reconstructing the virtual trajectory and the stiffness profiles for movements performed with different inertial loads and examining them. Three types of movements were tested: passive movements, targeted movements, and repetitive movements. Each of the movements was performed with five different inertial

[Manual medicine in otorhinolaryngology. Theoretical principles-- clinical practice--principles of therapy and prevention].

Manual medicine or ¿chirotherapy¿ has become a recognized part of medical training in Germany. In the last few decades, research in various fields has shed light on the pathoanatomic and pathophysiologic causes of functional disorders of the cervical vertebral column whose previous management was characterized by treatment of symptoms. The Arthron system provides a cybernetic model in the form of a closed-loop feedback system for visualization and training purposes. A momentary isolated disorder or recurrent exogenous disorders can be represented as reversible processes; the phases of reflex b

Adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS): the pathophysiologic role of catecholamine-kinin interactions.

The pathophysiology of the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) seems to be based on a cybernetic imbalance of the central nervous system (CNS), with activation of secondary peripheral effectors (PE). Lung vascular hyperpermeability is a crucial feature of PE actions in ARDS. Kinins (Bk), as PE, are important vascular hyperpermeability-inducing factors, with potential participation in ARDS induction. To test this hypothesis, we produced experimental ARDS in male Wistar rats using the anterior hypothalamic nuclei lesion model. Adrenalectomy, adrenal demedullation and denervation, alpha-ad

Inflammation in disseminated lesions: an analysis of CD4+, CD20+, CD68+, CD31+ and vW+ cells in non-ulcerated lesions of disseminated leishmaniasis.

Disseminated leishmaniasis (DL) differs from other clinical forms of the disease due to the presence of many non-ulcerated lesions (papules and nodules) in non-contiguous areas of the body. We describe the histopathology of DL non-ulcerated lesions and the presence of CD4-, CD20-, CD68-, CD31- and von Willebrand factor (vW)-positive cells in the inflamed area. We analysed eighteen biopsies from non-ulcerated lesions and quantified the inflamed areas and the expression of CD4, CD20, CD68, CD31 and vW using Image-Pro software (Media Cybernetics). Developmental word grounding through a growing neural network with a humanoid robot.

This paper presents an unsupervised approach of integrating speech and visual information without using any prepared data. The approach enables a humanoid robot, Incremental Knowledge Robot 1 (IKR1), to learn word meanings. The approach is different from most existing approaches in that the robot learns online from audio-visual input, rather than from stationary data provided in advance. In addition, the robot is capable of learning incrementally, which is considered to be indispensable to lifelong learning. A noise-robust self-organized growing neural network is developed to represent the top

Characterization, scaling, and partial representation of neural junctions and coordinated firing patterns by dynamic similarity.

This paper presents a dynamic-similarity-based system for mathematically characterizing the functional connectivity and information flow of neural junctions. This approach allows for quantitative comparison of operations of neural junctions across systems, and an interpretation of their connectivity parameters in terms of the flow of multiunit firing patterns. The paper further uses this characterization to show how to rationally construct reduced operational models of neural junctions. Both uniformly proportional scaling and partial fragmentary representations are developed. The uniformly sca

Neuroglobin Is Involved in the Hypoxic Stress Response in the Brain.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Neuroglobin is an oxygen-binding heme protein expressed predominantly in the brain. Despite many years of research, the exact distribution and expression of neuroglobin in the neocortical development and under mild hypoxia stress still remain unclear. Therefore, we aim to explore the expression of neuroglobin during neocortex expansion and under mild hypoxia stress in vivo. We used Kunming mice to examine the expression of Ngb protein during neocortex expansion. In addition, we analyzed the density of Ngb-positive neural stem cells using the Image-Pro PLUS (v.6) computer software program (Medi

The role of personal identity for sports and exercise across the life span: Mediating processes and determinants.

In this article, I discuss the role of personal identity for engagement in physical exercise. While being a most powerful determinant of an individual's level of physical exercise, the identity of a person is still a distal predictor that does not immediately translate into specific behaviours. Important questions thus relate to the processes that mediate effects of personal identity on behaviour and developmental outcomes. Cybernetic models focusing on negative feedback loops (discrepancy detection and corrective processes) provide only a limited understanding of these processes, and have to

[THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SYSTEM APPROACH IN THE STUDY OF THE GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME' REACTIONS].

The article discusses the problems of the process of environmental adaptations appearance which are based on the general principles of functional systems' constitution. The value of the theory of functional systems development as the basis for physiological cybernetics (P. Anokhin, 1935) is also given. A general adaptation syndrome ("a stress - syndrome") that was discovered by H. Selye is chosen as an example to explain the development of the stages of the functional system of the stress, the sequence and value of ongoing physiological reactions and negative feedback interactions. The stress

Modeling dynamic personality theories in a continuous-time framework: An illustration.

OBJECTIVE: Personality psychology has traditionally focused on stable between-person differences. Yet, recent theoretical developments and empirical insights have led to a new conceptualization of personality as a dynamic system (e.g., Cybernetic Big Five Theory). Such dynamic systems comprise several components that need to be conceptually distinguished and mapped to a statistical model for estimation. METHOD: In the current work, we illustrate how common components from these new dynamic personality theories may be implemented in a continuous time-modeling framework. RESULTS: As an empiric

The momentary and the macro in action control: A motor control analysis of impulse control difficulties.

According to cybernetic models of self-regulation, the success of one's overt behaviors may very well depend on how well one controls one's behaviors in more momentary terms. The present research applies such perspectives to the analysis of individual differences in impulse control difficulties, which are thought to constitute losses of control in responses to stressors or distress, representing a form of emotional impulsivity. In three studies (total N = 349), undergraduate participants were asked to perform motor control tasks involving stationary or moving targets, which permitted the compu

Conceptualizing a less paranoid schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia stands as one of the most studied and storied disorders in the history of clinical psychology; however, it remains a nexus of conflicting and competing conceptualizations. Patients endure great stigma, poor treatment outcomes, and condemnatory prognosis. Current conceptualizations suffer from unstable categorical borders, heterogeneity in presentation, outcome and etiology, and holes in etiological models. Taken in aggregate, research and clinical experience indicate that the class of psychopathologies oriented toward schizophrenia are best understood as spectra of phenomenologic

Does AIDS involve some collusion by the neuro-immune system because of positive learning of the disarmament strategy?

Korzybski's general semantics recommends considering living beings as organisms-as-a-whole in their environment. Our cognitive abilities, specific to the human species, have thus to be taken into account. In this framework we establish a semantic similarity between particular stressful events of the 20th century and AIDS in which the immune-deficiency-caused is semiotically seen as a biological state of disarmament of the organism. It then appears that: These observations suggest that AIDS could benefit from some collusion by the neuro-immune system because of positive learning of the semiotic

[Neurological assessment of learning disorders].

INTRODUCTION: The neurological concept of learning is approached from a cybernetic point of view, taking into account that a child should recognize a fact, learn it semantically and decided whether it is worth storing; the dynamic aspect of memory is the true motor of the ability to learn and all this is modulated by the attention factor. DEVELOPMENT: The neurological evaluation of learning disorders is based on clinical examination which includes the so-called minor signs of the noetic functions, specifically language, the praxes, gnosias, perceptive-motor function, laterality and the lexica

[Life experiences and differential aspects of the social relations of the aged in facilities for the aged. Empirical findings from 3 Hamburg facilities].

In the beginning it is illustrated that there is a number of problems in the different fields of open care and work with institutionalized old people which could be better solved or reduced by an integrative approach. It is the goal of this report to make evident that there are wrong attitudes towards living in institutions which are - besides other barriers - hindering for the realization of such an integrative approach. After a view over the organization-structure and the supply offered by the institutions, the average-home-inhabitants are presented - from a cybernetical point of view - as "

Abnormal motor patterns in the framework of the equilibrium-point hypothesis: a cause for dystonic movements?

Until now, the equilibrium-point hypothesis (lambda model) of motor control has assumed nonintersecting force-length characteristics of the tonic stretch reflex for individual muscles. Limited data from animal experiments suggest, however, that such intersections may occur. We have assumed the possibility of intersection of the characteristics of the tonic stretch reflex and performed a computer simulation of movement trajectories and electromyographic patterns. The simulation has demonstrated, in particular, that a transient change in the slope of the characteristic of an agonist muscle may l

Vagus Nerve Stimulation in the Developmentally Disabled.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) with the neuro cybernetic prosthesis (NCP) is an approved treatment of partial seizures for patients 12 years and older. Developmentally disabled or mentally retarded patients with epilepsy may also benefit from VNS; however, their evaluation and management pose greater problems. A retrospective chart review was conducted on all patients diagnosed with mild to severe mental retardation who had an NCP implanted. Records of these 21 patients, ranging in age from 3 to 56 years, were reviewed regarding VNS efficacy, side effects, behavioral changes, and alterations in
