We describe a mechanism by which vertebrate Msx homeobox genes inhibit cellular differentiation by regulation of the cell cycle. Forty-two specimens from oropharyngeal (tonsil and base of tongue) squamous cell carcinoma patients (SCC) were studied for presence of HPV 16 by in situ hybridization and by immunohistochemistry for p53 and Cyclin D1 protein overexpression. Thirty-one per cent of cases were HPV-16 positive, which correlates with the prevalence reported worldwide. 74% of cases showed p53 protein overexpression and 79% showed Cyclin D1 overexpression. Hypopharyngeal carcinoma (HPC) has a poor prognosis. We investigated the expression of cyclin D1 in 34 advanced HPCs, and the value of cyclin D1 expression was evaluated as a predictive marker in terms of the prognosis of HPC, compared with other clinical factors.
