Increase in tropical cyclone rain rate with translation speed.

In general, tropical cyclone (TC) rainfall accumulation usually decreases with faster TC translation speed but increases with heavier rain rate. However, how the TC rain rate changes with translation speed is unclear. Here we show that, in all TC basins, the average TC rain rate significantly increases with translation speed. On average, the rain rate in a fast-moving TC is 24% higher than in a slow one. This difference increases with TC intensity, with category 3-5 TCs having a 42% increase while tropical depressions exhibit only a 9% increase. The increase in the average TC rain rate with tr

Short-term excess mortality following tropical cyclones in the United States.

Knowledge of excess deaths after tropical cyclones is critical to understanding their impacts, directly relevant to policies on preparedness and mitigation. We applied an ensemble of 16 Bayesian models to 40.7 million U.S. deaths and a comprehensive record of 179 tropical cyclones over 32 years (1988-2019) to estimate short-term all-cause excess deaths. The deadliest tropical cyclone was Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with 1491 [95% credible interval (CrI): 563, 3206] excess deaths (>99% posterior probability of excess deaths), including 719 [95% CrI: 685, 752] in Orleans Parish, LA (>99% probabil

The Imperial College Storm Model (IRIS) Dataset.

Assessing tropical cyclone risk on a global scale given the infrequency of landfalling tropical cyclones (TC) and the short period of reliable observations remains a challenge. Synthetic tropical cyclone datasets can help overcome these problems. Here we present a new global dataset created by IRIS, the ImpeRIal college Storm model. IRIS is novel because, unlike other synthetic TC models, it only simulates the decay from the point of lifetime maximum intensity. This minimises the bias in the dataset. It takes input from 42 years of observed tropical cyclones and creates a 10,000 year synthetic

Influence of catastrophic climatic events and human waste on Vibrio distribution in the Karnaphuli estuary, Bangladesh.

Vibrios are bacteria of marine and estuarine origin that can cause human diseases, such as cholera, and also affect aquatic organisms. The impact of storm-driven changes in salinity and suspended particulate matter (SPM) on cultivable Vibrio counts (CVC) and distribution in Karnaphuli estuary, Bangladesh, was compared before and after a strong cyclone in mid May 2007 and after a monsoon landslide a month later. CVC were higher (approximately 10(3) colony forming units-cfu/ml) at estuary's mouth (salinity 20-15 parts per thousand, ppt) and steeply declined landwards. CVC and their proportion of

The trauma signature of 2016 Hurricane Matthew and the psychosocial impact on Haiti.

Background. Hurricane Matthew was the most powerful tropical cyclone of the 2016 Atlantic Basin season, bringing severe impacts to multiple nations including direct landfalls in Cuba, Haiti, Bahamas, and the United States. However, Haiti experienced the greatest loss of life and population disruption. Methods. An established trauma signature (TSIG) methodology was used to examine the psychological consequences of Hurricane Matthew in relation to the distinguishing features of this event. TSIG analyses described the exposures of Haitian citizens to the unique constellation of hazards associated

Machine learning-based assessment of storm surge in the New York metropolitan area.

Storm surge generated from low-probability high-consequence tropical cyclones is a major flood hazard to the New York metropolitan area and its assessment requires a large number of storm scenarios. High-fidelity hydrodynamic numerical simulations can predict surge levels from storm scenarios. However, an accurate prediction requires a relatively fine computational grid, which is computationally expensive, especially when including wave effects. Towards alleviating the computational burden, Machine Learning models are developed to determine long-term average recurrence of flood levels induced

Impact of extreme weather events on cropland inundation over Indian subcontinent.

Cyclonic storms and extreme precipitation lead to loss of lives and significant damage to land and property, crop productivity, etc. The "Gulab" cyclonic storm formed on the 24th of September 2021 in the Bay of Bengal (BoB), hit the eastern Indian coasts on the 26th of September and caused massive damage and water inundation. This study used Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) satellite precipitation data for daily to monthly scale assessments focusing on the "Gulab" cyclonic event. The Otsu's thresholding approach was applied to Sentinel-1 data to map water inundation. Stand

A global dataset of synthetic tropical cyclone tracks for the El Niño‒Southern Oscillation.

Tropical cyclones have devastating consequences, ranging from economic damage to health impacts with impacts varying annually. El Niño‒Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the primary climate mode that influences interannual timescales, with significant implications for tropical cyclone activity across different basins. An extensive dataset is essential for the accurate assessment of the interannual variability in tropical cyclone risk related to this climate mode. Herein, we present a global dataset of 12,000 years of synthetic storm tracks, representing each ENSO phase (El Niño, La Niña, and neutr

Intense storms increase global ice area.

Earth's energy balance is strongly modulated by sea ice cover. Cyclones can impact sea ice extent by amplifying wave activity, promoting ice breakup, advecting heat and moisture, and enhancing sea ice drift. Due to the range of processes involved, the net effect of cyclones on global ice area has yet to be quantified. Here we analyze two decades of intense cyclones that interact with the global marginal ice zone, showing that storms enhance the seasonal ice growth and decay cycle in both hemispheres. Cyclones intensify equatorward winds and ice advection within a cooling ocean during the cold

Global population profile of tropical cyclone exposure from 2002 to 2019.

Tropical cyclones have far-reaching impacts on livelihoods and population health that often persist years after the event1-4. Characterizing the demographic and socioeconomic profile and the vulnerabilities of exposed populations is essential to assess health and other risks associated with future tropical cyclone events5. Estimates of exposure to tropical cyclones are often regional rather than global6 and do not consider population vulnerabilities7. Here we combine spatially resolved annual demographic estimates with tropical cyclone wind fields estimates to construct a global profile of the

Microfibers Accumulation within a Mediterranean Submesoscale Cyclone.

Cyclonic eddies are widespread upper ocean features known to enhance primary productivity via nutrient upwelling; yet, their role in the transport and retention of anthropogenic contaminants remains poorly understood. Here, we present high-resolution oceanographic measurements from a submesoscale cyclone in the Western Mediterranean Sea, revealing a pronounced subsurface accumulation of textile microfibers (MFs) within the eddy core (0.34 MF l-1) relative to surrounding waters (0.09 MF l-1). This enrichment persisted in a secondary, smaller cyclone that detaches following the main cyclone's fr

Cash grants to informal firms after Cyclone Idai: beyond the null.

This study investigates the effects of unconditional cash grants on informal manufacturing firms' recovery after Cyclone Idai struck Mozambique in 2019. Using a novel stratified adaptive cluster sampling approach, we collected representative panel data from firms in Beira (heavily affected) and Chimoio (less affected). Many firms demonstrated rapid initial recovery without financial intervention, but did not sustain this over time. Although the overall effect of the grants on the full sample is not statistically significant, important heterogeneity in treatment effects did emerge. In Beira, th

Sunny-Day Flooding and Mortality Risk in Coastal Florida.

Sea-level rise is likely to worsen the impacts of hurricanes, storm surges, and tidal flooding on coastal access to basic services. We investigate the historical impact of tidal flooding on mortality rates of the elderly population in coastal Florida using administrative records of individual deaths, demographics, and residential location combined with tidal gauge and high-resolution elevation data. We incorporate data capturing storm and precipitation events into our empirical model to distinguish between disruptions from routine sunny-day flooding and less predictable tropical storm-induced

Using Inundation Extents to Predict Microbial Contamination in Private Wells after Flooding Events.

Disaster recovery poses unique challenges for residents reliant on private wells. Flooding events are drivers of microbial contamination in well water, but the relationship observed between flooding and contamination varies substantially. Here, we investigate the performance of different flood boundaries─the FEMA 100 year flood hazard boundary, height above nearest drainage-derived inundation extents, and satellite-derived extents from the Dartmouth Flood Observatory─in their ability to identify well water contamination following Hurricane Florence. Using these flood boundaries, we estimated a

The effect of repeated hurricanes on the age of organic carbon in humid tropical forest soil.

Increasing hurricane frequency and intensity with climate change is likely to affect soil organic carbon (C) stocks in tropical forests. We examined the cycling of C between soil pools and with depth at the Luquillo Experimental Forest in Puerto Rico in soils over a 30-year period that spanned repeated hurricanes. We used a nonlinear matrix model of soil C pools and fluxes ("soilR") and constrained the parameters with soil and litter survey data. Soil chemistry and stable and radiocarbon isotopes were measured from three soil depths across a topographic gradient in 1988 and 2018. Our results s

Characteristics of mesoscale eddies in the Mozambique Channel.

The mesoscale eddy characteristics of the Mozambique Warm Current were investigated by detecting and tracking satellite altimetry data from 2010 to 2019. A total of 1,086 eddies were identified in the Mozambique Channel, comprising 509 cyclonic eddies and 577 anticyclonic eddies. The results revealed that the bay area on the northwest coast of Madagascar was the main hotspot of eddy generation, and the mean amplitude and radius of the anticyclonic eddies in the Mozambique Channel were 24.23 cm and 82.7 km, respectively, which are larger than those of the cyclonic eddies. Local wind forcing had

Machine learning-based assessment of regional-scale variation of landslide susceptibility in central Vietnam.

Recurrent landslide events triggered by typhoons and tropical storms over Vietnam pose a longstanding threat to the nation's population and infrastructure. Changes in hydroclimatic conditions, especially the growing intensity and frequency of storms, have elevated landslide susceptibility in many parts of the country. This research examines the spatio-temporal variations in landslide susceptibility across central Vietnam over several years, using multi-temporal landslide inventories from Typhoon Ketsana (2009), Tropical Storm Podul (2013), and Typhoon Molave (2020). Additionally, the research

An integrated index developed for measuring precipitation complexity: a case study of Jinsha River basin, China.

Accurate quantification of precipitation complexity is vital for assessing the impact of changing environments on precipitation processes and guiding precipitation forecasting. However, previous research mostly quantified precipitation complexity from different perspectives, resulting in differences in complexity results. In this study, the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA; derived from fractal), Lyapunov exponent (derived from Chao), and sample entropy (derived from entropy) were used for investigating the complexity of regional precipitation. Then, the integrated complexit
