The cyclopentolate provocative test in suspected or untreated open-angle glaucoma. II. Clinical studies on the mechanism of intraocular pressure elevations.

The mydriasis provocative test with 1% cyclopentolate (CPT) was performed on 218 patients with suspected or untreated open-angle glaucoma, on 431 eyes in all. Significant IOP elevations (larger than or equal to 8 mmHg) were demonstrated in 21 eyes of 18 patients. The present paper analyses the responder group and presents some other investigation results and clinical findings to throw additional light on the mechanism of IOP elevation in responders. The responders did not differ from the other patients of the material in age or sex. Patients with capsular glaucoma constituted the biggest group

Grand mal seizure in a child 30 minutes after Cyclogyl (cyclopentolate hydrochloride) and 10% Neo-Synephrine (phenylephrine hydrochloride) eye drops were instilled.

A grand mal seizure is an unexpected, rare adverse event in a child receiving eye drops to dilate the pupils for an eye examination. A case is reported of a convulsion in a 23-month-old boy after he received Cyclogyl (cyclopentolate) and Neo-Synephrine (phenylephrine) eye drops before ophthalmoscopy. His serum sodium was 125 mEq/L, and he had low plasma pseudocholinesterase activity. Children exposed to organophosphate insecticides and other pseudocholinesterase inhibitors may be at risk for cyclopentolate toxicity.

A comparison of mydriatic eyedrops in low-weight infants.

The pupils of neonates often need to be dilated to examine the retina for retinopathy of prematurity and other disorders. It is known that low-weight infants (less than 1600 grams) are susceptible to systemic hypertension when 10% or 2.5% phenylephrine eye drops are used. To find the safest and best commercially available mydriatic agent in neonates, 30 low-weight infants were divided evenly into three groups. The drops tested were cyclopentolate 0.5% alone, cyclopentolate 0.5% plus mydriacyl 0.5%, and a combination drop of phenylephrine 1% and cyclopentolate 0.2%. There was no clinically sign
