Parasitic colitis.

Over one billion people worldwide harbor intestinal parasites. Parasitic intestinal infections have a predilection for developing countries due to overcrowding and poor sanitation but are also found in developed nations, such as the United States, particularly in immigrants or in the setting of sporadic outbreaks. Although the majority of people are asymptomatically colonized with parasites, the clinical presentation can range from mild abdominal discomfort or diarrhea to serious complications, such as perforation or bleeding. Protozoa and helminths (worms) are the two major classes of intesti

Emerging infectious diseases and travel medicine.

International movement of individuals, populations, and products is one of the major factors associated with the emergence and reemergence of infectious diseases as the pace of global travel and commerce increases rapidly. Travel can be associated with disease emergence because (1) the disease arises in an area of heavy tourism, (2) tourists may be at heightened risk because of their activities, or (3) because they can act as vectors to transport the agent to new areas. Examples of recently recognized diseases with relationship to travel include HIV, Legionnaire's disease, cyclosporiasis, Vibr

[Bioterrorism, parasites as potential bioterrorism agents and biosecurity studies].

A variety of agents have a potential risk for being use as weapons of biological terrorism. However, the use of parasites as bioterrorism agents has not received so much attention. Parasites could contribute to the installation of fear in human population upon intentional addition to their food and water supplies. On the other hand, vector-borne parasites can also constitute risk of bioterrorism. Biosecurity issues are gaining importance as a consequence of globalization. Surveillance is critical in maintaining biosecurity and early detection of infectious disease agents is essential. In this

Evaluation of lacto-phenol cotton blue (LPCB) for detection of Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora and Isospora in the wet mount preparation of stool.

Lacto-phenol cotton blue (LPCB) was found to be a useful stain for detection of Cyclospora and Isospora oocysts in direct wet mounts of stool. LPCB stained these parasites blue, and differentiated their internal structures clearly, thereby facilitating detection and accurate identification of these parasites. However, the LPCB staining was not found useful in the identification of Cryptosporidium. The LPCB wet mount is recommended for use in the laboratories where acid-fast staining is not performed routinely, such as in a peripheral laboratory or in a rural health centre in the developing cou

History of human parasitology.

Humans are hosts to nearly 300 species of parasitic worms and over 70 species of protozoa, some derived from our primate ancestors and some acquired from the animals we have domesticated or come in contact with during our relatively short history on Earth. Our knowledge of parasitic infections extends into antiquity, and descriptions of parasites and parasitic infections are found in the earliest writings and have been confirmed by the finding of parasites in archaeological material. The systematic study of parasites began with the rejection of the theory of spontaneous generation and the prom

Assessing the sequencing success and analytical specificity of a targeted amplicon deep sequencing workflow for genotyping the foodborne parasite Cyclospora.

Epidemiological investigations of the foodborne parasitic illness cyclosporiasis can be aided by molecular techniques that enable the identification of genetically related clusters of Cyclospora isolates. At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), routine Cyclospora genotyping for the purpose of informing epidemiological outbreak investigations has occurred since 2018 using clinical stool specimens from case patients diagnosed with cyclosporiasis. This approach involves targeted amplicon deep sequencing of eight genotyping markers, followed by bioinformatic processing through a c

Chronic Cyclospora infection in a heart transplant patient with intestinal malabsorption: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporiasis is a rare cause of chronic diarrhea and malabsorption in immunosuppressed patients. CASE SUMMARY: We report an unusual case of chronic Cyclospora infection in a heart transplant patient with a five-month history of watery diarrhea and weight loss. Initial stool testing failed to discover a causative pathogen. Duodenal biopsy showed histologic findings of intraepithelial lymphocytosis and partial villous blunting, raising the possibility of celiac disease. A repeat duodenal biopsy five months later revealed intracellular parasites with gametocyte, meront, and schizon

Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Cyclospora in ancient Peruvians.

Twenty-two coprolites of human origin, collected from excavations along the north-central coast of Peru, were examined using fluorescent microscopy for the presence of fecal parasites, with emphasis on Cryptosporidium sp., Giardia sp., and Cyclospora sp. Three samples were positive. One coprolite dated between ca. 2,375 and 1,525 BC contained Giardia sp. cysts. This coprolite corresponded to the Peruvian preceramic period. Another positive coprolite ca. AD 770-830 corresponded to Epoch 3 of the Middle Horizon and contained Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts. The third positive coprolite (correspondin

Cyclospora cayetanensis and other intestinal parasites associated with diarrhea in a rural area of Jordan.

Cryptosporidium spp. and Cyclospora cayetanensis have emerged as important causes of epidemic and endemic diarrhea in immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts. The exact modes of transmission in certain rural areas are still unclear. Reports of water-borne and food-borne outbreaks suggest that fecally contaminated water or food acts as a vehicle of transmission. Two hundred stool samples of patients with gastroenteritis from four health centers in a rural area of Jordan were examined using formalin-ethyl acetate concentration, wet preparation, and modified acid-fast staining methods. Oocyst

Recovery of Cyclospora cayetanensis among asymptomatic rural Thai schoolchildren.

OBJECTIVE: To obtain the prevalence with clinical symptoms of Cyclospora cayetanensis (C. cayetanensis), a coccidian protozoan parasite, in Thailand which is the cause of an intestinal infection characterized by sporadic-to-frequent explosive diarrhea. METHODS: In a field survey conducted by the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, as part of the existing parasite-control program, a total of 2 540 faecal samples from villagers in Nan Province, Thailand, were collected and examined to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of parasitic infections. RESULTS: Twelve c

[An outbreak of Cyclospora cayetanensis in Medellín, Colombia].

OBJECTIVE: Describing an outbreak of gastrointestinal disease in a group of 56 patients from Medellín, Colombia. METHODS: An unusual number of cases of diarrhoea appeared in April 2002 and 56 samples of stool from the same number of individuals were collected because a patient proved Cyclospora cayetanensis positive. A clinical-epidemiological survey, direct coprology, formol-ether concentration and modified Zielhs Neelsen staining were then carried out. Some food samples were also studied for parasites by direct and modified Zielh Neelsen staining. RESULTS: 55.4% (31/56) of the patients bei

Common Intestinal Parasites.

Parasites are a source of significant illness worldwide. In the United States, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, cyclosporiasis, and trichinellosis are nationally notifiable conditions. Pinworm, the most common intestinal parasite in children, is not a locally notifiable infection. Intestinal parasites have a wide range of acute and chronic symptoms but should be suspected in those who present with diarrhea lasting more than seven days. Infections most often occur through a fecal-oral route. Symptoms tend to be worse for children, older adults, or immunocompromised individuals. To diagnose Giardi

Simultaneous Molecular Detection of Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora from Raw Vegetables in Korea.

Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora are well-known coccidian protozoa that can cause waterborne and foodborne diarrheal illnesses. There have been a few reports regarding contamination in different vegetables with Cryptosporidium, but no data are available regarding the sources of Cyclospora infections in Korea. In the present study, we collected 6 kinds of vegetables (perilla leaves, winter-grown cabbages, chives, sprouts, blueberries, and cherry tomatoes) from July 2014 to June 2015, and investigated contamination by these 2 protozoa using multiplex quantitative real-time PCR. Among 404 vegetable

[Two diarrhea cases caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis].

Cyclospora cayetanensis is an intestinal protozoon that has emerged as an important cause of endemic or epidemic diarrheal disease in children and adults worldwide. Cases of cyclosporiasis have been frequently missed, since it is difficult to detect the parasite in fecal sample, despite an increasing amount of data regarding this parasite. In this case report two patients admitted to hospital with complaints of diarrhea and abdominal pain, were presented. Blood and urine biochemistry of both of the patients were within the normal limits and no pathogenic bacteria were grown in their stool samp

[Cyclospora cayetanensis and Cryptosporidium parvum coinfection in a pregnant woman with prolonged diarrhoea].

Cyclospora cayetanensis which is a recently described pathogen, is associated with prolonged diarrheae and history of travelling to tropical regions and intake of suspicious food and water. Cryptosporidium parvum is another pathogen that causes severe diarrhea defined initially in especially AIDS patients since 1980's. Cases of cyclosporiasis are frequently missed, since it is difficult to detect the parasite in human fecal samples, despite an increasing amount of data regarding this parasite. To identify both of these coccidian protozoa, faeces should be examined by modified acid-fast stain.

A modified case-control study of cryptosporidiosis (using non-Cryptosporidium-infected enteric cases as controls) in a community setting.

Data from the first sentinel site (Waterloo Region, Ontario) of the Canadian Integrated Enteric Disease Surveillance System (C-EnterNet) were used in a secondary-based case-control study of laboratory-confirmed Cryptosporidium infections to study the role of various exposure factors. The incidence of cryptosporidiosis in Waterloo Region was almost double both the provincial and national rates. Persons ill with one of nine other enteric infections (amoebiasis, campylobacteriosis, cyclosporiasis, giardiasis, listeriosis, salmonellosis, shigellosis, verotoxigenic E. coli infections, yersiniosis)
