Histopathology of laboratory-reared Nothobranchius fishes: Mycobacterial infections versus neoplastic lesions.

Short-lived killifishes of the genus Nothobranchius Peters, 1868 (Cyprinodontiformes) are considered promising model organisms for biomedical research on ageing and tumorigenesis. We conducted histopathological analysis of 411 adult individuals from three Nothobranchius species to study details on spontaneous age-related neoplastic lesions. Light microscopy based on H&E and toluidine blue-stained sections revealed (a) non-proliferative liver changes with pronounced vacuolation of hepatocytes; (b) proliferation of kidney haemopoietic tissue contributing to excretory system damage; (c) prolifera

The Possibility of Using Isolated Alkaloid Compounds and Crude Extracts of Piper retrofractum (Piperaceae) as Larvicidal Control Agents for Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) Larvae.

Culex quinquefasciatus is a common domestic mosquito that is widespread in many areas of Thailand and serves as a southeastern vector of Japanese encephalitis. The present study investigated the acute toxicity of crude extracts and alkaloid compounds of Piper retrofractum (Piperales: Piperaceae) in Cx. quinquefasciatus third instar larvae. P. retrofractum was sequentially extracted using hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol, and the crude extracts were tested on mosquito larvae. Detoxification and neuroenzymes were analyzed to establish the mode of action. Acute toxicity was as

Integrating morphology and genetics to resolve the first reptilian liolopid life cycle in Africa, Paraharmotrema karinganiense (Digenea: Liolopidae).

The Liolopidae (Diplostomoidea) are a small family of digeneans that parasitize reptiles and amphibians as adults. Knowledge of intermediate hosts in this family remains scarce, leaving a major gap in the understanding of liolopid biology. To date, the only fully elucidated life cycle is that of Liolope copulans Cohn 1902, a species infecting Asian salamanders, with no other cercarial or metacercarial stages known. This study aimed to identify potential intermediate hosts for Paraharmotrema karinganiense, found in several chelonian species from southeastern Mozambique and South Africa. African

Evolution of the Degenerated Y-Chromosome of the Swamp Guppy, Micropoecilia picta.

The conspicuous colour sexual dimorphism of guppies has made them paradigmatic study objects for sex-linked traits and sex chromosome evolution. Both the X- and Y-chromosomes of the common guppy (Poecilia reticulata) are genetically active and homomorphic, with a large homologous part and a small sex specific region. This feature is considered to emulate the initial stage of sex chromosome evolution. A similar situation has been documented in the related Endler's and Oropuche guppies (P. wingei, P. obscura) indicating a common origin of the Y in this group. A recent molecular study in the swam

Effects of anthropogenic metallic contamination on cholinesterases of Gambusia holbrooki.

Metal contamination causes multiple biological dysfunctions, including impairment of key physiological functions by targeting enzymes. This feature is a matter of concern, since it may imply significant disturbances in energy allocation, behaviour, reproduction, and survival. Inhibition of the cholinesterase (ChE) activity of aquatic organisms by metals has been described, and systematically used in biomonitoring studies as effect criterion of environmental exposure to these compounds. The present paper addresses the feasibility of using ChE inhibition to quantify the adverse acute and chronic

The evolution of a placenta is not linked to increased brain size in poeciliid fishes.

Maternal investment is hypothesized to have a direct influence on the size of energetically costly organs, including the brain. In placental organisms, offspring are supplied with nutrients during prenatal development, potentially modulating brain size. Previous research has predominantly focused on mammalian species that exhibit both pre- and postnatal provisioning, in which effects on brain size have been observed during both developmental stages. Here, using 8 poeciliid fish species, we test if those species with placental structures (i.e., matrotrophy) invest more resources into offspring

Variation in self-compatibility among genotypes and across ontogeny in a self-fertilizing vertebrate, Kryptolebias marmoratus.

Mixed-mating strategies can maximize the benefits and limit the costs of both self-fertilization and outcrossing. In addition to ecological conditions and population dynamics, the economics of mixed mating are determined by individual self-compatibility, i.e. the proportion of self-fertilization events that result in viable offspring. In gynodioecious (hermaphrodites and females) and androdioecious (hermaphrodites and males) species, self-compatibility of hermaphrodites dictates the reproductive potential of the other sex and can exert strong selection on maintenance of the non-hermaphroditic

Long-term trends (1998-2022) of total mercury in mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) from the Everglades Protection Area, Florida, USA.

Mercury bioaccumulation has been a serious environmental concern in Florida's Everglades. Mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) composite samples were collected from 12 stations within the Everglades Protection Area and Everglades National Park from 1998 to 2022 and were analyzed for total mercury (THg). Annual average mosquitofish THg concentrations observed at the 12 stations differed significantly and varied from 11 ng g-1 at an inflow station to 86 ng g-1 at an interior station. Four stations displayed significant declines in mosquitofish THg concentrations, whereas six stations showed weak de

Induction of masculinization in mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) by the synthetic progestin etonogestrel exposure: Insights from morphology, ovarian histology, and transcriptomic analyses.

The demand for synthetic progesterone has surged due to its widespread use in contraceptives and veterinary drugs. However, these compounds are not fully removed by wastewater treatment plants, leading to their release into aquatic environments and potential disruption of fish reproduction and development. Etonogestrel (ETO), a third-generation synthetic progestogen, is widely used in oral contraceptives. In this study, adult female mosquitofish were exposed to ETO at measured concentrations of 0 ng/L, 3.88 ng/L, 39.5 ng/L, and 385.18 ng/L for 36 days. Morphology, ovarian histology, and transc

Male age alone predicts paternity success under sperm competition when effects of age and past mating effort are experimentally separated.

Older males often perform poorly under post-copulatory sexual selection. It is unclear, however, whether reproductive senescence is because of male age itself or the accumulated costs of the higher lifetime mating effort that is usually associated with male age. To date, very few studies have accounted for mating history and sperm storage when testing the effect of male age on sperm traits, and none test how age and past mating history influence paternity success under sperm competition. Here, we experimentally manipulate male mating history to tease apart its effects from that of age on ejacu

Pathology survey on a captive-bred colony of the Mexican Goodeid, nearly extinct in the wild, Zoogoneticus tequila (Webb & Miller 1998).

The Mexican Goodeid, Zoogoneticus tequila, is considered nearly extinct in the wild and it is maintained in captivity by the nonprofit international "Goodeid Working Group." The unique Italian colony has produced about 180 fish so far. The observable diseases were registered and some fish were submitted, immediately after spontaneous death, to necroscopic and histopathologic exams. Encountered diseases included the following: 7 cases of scoliosis (2 males and 5 females); 2 fish with a similar congenital deviation of ocular axis; 1 adult male with left corneal opacity, presumably of traumatic o

Seasonal reproductive patterns of female Gambusia holbrooki from two Florida lakes.

Lake Apopka in central Florida (USA) is significantly contaminated with a variety of chemicals including anthropogenic nutrients, organochlorine pesticides like dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), and multiple congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Our laboratory has previously documented a number of reproductive abnormalities in alligators from Lake Apopka, compared with alligators captured from Lake Woodruff, a nearby reference lake. We conducted the present study to investigate if another native vertebrate, Gambusia holbrooki (eastern mo

Experimentally induced motion sickness in fish: possible role of the otolith organs.

OBJECTIVE: Although the occurrence of motion sickness is largely attributed to sensory conflict, the reasons for the highly variable inter-individual susceptibility to motion sickness remain unclear. One cause may be asymmetry between otoconial masses in the right and left inner ear. This hypothesis has been supported by experiments in fish under conditions of prolonged weightlessness and parabolic flight. In swordtail fish (Xiphophorus helleri) we examined the extent to which a Coriolis force environment, which has a strong motion sickness-triggering effect, disturbs swimming behaviour or pro

Triple trouble? Invasive poeciliid fishes carry the introduced tilapia pathogen Gyrodactylus cichlidarum in the Mexican highlands.

As part of ongoing surveys of the gyrodactylid parasite fauna of freshwater fishes in Mexico, we recorded the infection of three species of poeciliids (Poecilia mexicana, Poeciliopsis gracilis, and Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus [syn.=Heterandria bimaculata]) with Gyrodactylus cichlidarum, a monogenean parasite of cichlid fishes, which has been co-introduced globally with its translocated, African "tilapia" hosts. This tilapia pathogen was found on poeciliid fishes both within their native distribution range in the Gulf of Mexico slope, as well as on invasive species artificially introduced to

Phyllodistomum spinopapillatum sp. nov. (Digenea: Gorgoderidae), from the Oaxaca killifish Profundulus balsanus (Osteichthyes: Profundulidae) in Mexico, with new host and locality records of P. inecoli: Morphology, ultrastructure and molecular evidence.

Phyllodistomum spinopapillatum sp. nov. is described from the urinary bladder of the Oaxaca killifish, Profundulus balsanus Ahl (Profundulidae) in Rio Pueblo Viejo and Rio Santa Cruz, Oaxaca, southwestern Mexico. The new species is described based on evidence gathered from morphology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and partial sequences of the 28S rRNA gene. Diagnostic characters of the new species of Phyllodistomum Braun 1899 are the presence of spines on the entire body surface and having a ventral sucker almost half the size of oral sucker. The new species possess a large number of dom

Morphological, histopathological, and transcriptomic analyses of gonads reveal reproductive impacts of levonorgestrel (LNG) exposure on Gambusia affinis.

Levonorgestrel (LNG), a synthetic progestin, is extensively utilized in contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies in daily medical practice. To date, LNG has been frequently detected in various water bodies worldwide, posing significant threats to aquatic organisms, particularly fish. Its presence disrupts the delicate hormonal balance and gonadal development pathways in fish, leading to adverse effects on their reproductive health and potentially altering population dynamics. In this study, adult female mosquitofish were chronically exposed to LNG at four distinct concentration levels

Reproductive toxicity of chronic exposure to cortisone in western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis).

Cortisone is a commonly found in a variety of aquatic environments and has potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms. This study was to assess the chronic toxic effects of cortisone at different concentrations (0.0, 5.0, 50.0 and 500.0 ng/L) for 60 days on adult female western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). The results revealed that cortisone significantly increased the proportion of perinuclear oocytes concomitant with reduced the prevalence of late-stage oocytes, indicating arrested oocyte maturation. Meanwhile, exposed females exhibited compromised mate attraction and diminished cour

Morphological, histological and multi-omics analysis revealed the molecular response of female western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) to levonorgestrel exposure.

In recent years, the use of synthetic progestogens in medicine has increased, and their presence is frequently detected in rivers. Therefore, an increasing number of researchers are beginning to focus on the impact they have on the reproduction and development of aquatic organisms. Levonorgestrel (LNG) is a synthetic progestin widely used in oral contraceptives and is also frequently detected in rivers. To assess the impact of LNG on mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), in this study, adult female mosquitofish were exposed to LNG at concentrations of 0, 5, 50, and 500 ng/L for 36 consecutive days,
