An increase in invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infections among children under 15 years of age was reported in several countries between late 2022 and early 2023. This retrospective study aims to describe the epidemiology and clinical features of iGAS infections in children in Cyprus during the same period. Medical records of patients under 16 years old admitted with iGAS infection to the Archbishop Makarios Hospital, the only tertiary paediatric referral centre in Cyprus, between 1 January 2021 and 30 June 2024, were reviewed. Twenty-two cases were identified, of which twenty were class

R. typhi is one of the rickettsial species endemic in the Mediterranean countries and is associated with the zoonotic infection of murine typhus, which may have a complicated course especially in adult patients. Murine typhus in pregnancy has rarely been reported in the medical literature. We describe a case of murine typhus in a pregnant woman who was effectively treated with erythromycin.

It is well documented that child sexual abuse (CSA) may be one of the major public health problems in the world, especially due to the co-occurrence with other types of abuse and negative developmental outcomes. The aim of the current study was the comprehensive examination of CSA with respect to its prevalence, its contexts of occurrence and its correlates. The sample included 1852 adolescents and young adults (15-25 years old; 441 males), recruited through schools, universities and other youth organizations across Cyprus. Participants were administered an online questionnaire assessing multi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The most common thyroid disorders, with an increasing detection worldwide, are the thyroid nodules and thyroiditis, which leads to an increase of thyroid cancer incidence . In two different countries with a different exposure to risk factors for thyroid cancer, such as Cyprus and Romania, the rank of thyroid cancer among other neoplasms is very different: the 3(rd) most prevalent cancer among females in Cyprus and the 12(th) in Romania, respectively. Environmental chemicals, such as bisphenol A have a proven effect on the thyroid function. However, the relation between the

Restriction endonuclease analysis has been performed on the alpha and beta globin gene clusters of 57 Cypriots homozygous for beta thalassaemia, 30 with the transfusion dependent form of the condition (thalassaemia major) and 27 who are less severely affected (thalassaemia intermedia). There was a significant difference in the incidence of alpha thalassaemia between the two groups: 14/27 of the patients with thalassaemia intermedia also had deletion forms of alpha thalassaemia, while only 4/30 of the patients with thalassaemia major were similarly affected. Thus in Cypriot patients who are hom

BACKGROUND: Despite its rarity, cancer in children and adolescents (CAC) is a major health issue worldwide. The lack of appropriate cancer registries is an obstacle for defining its incidence and survival, and informing cancer control. As in Cyprus, CAC epidemiology has not previously been comprehensively examined, we determined incidence rates and temporal trends of cancer in the 0-19 age group during 1998-2017.
METHODS: We established the population based Paediatric Oncology Registry of Cyprus (PORCY) for the period 1998-2017. World age standardised incidence rate per million children and a

Cryptosporidium is an important intestinal zoonotic pathogen that can infect various hosts and cause diarrheal disease. There are no reports on the prevalence and molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium in wild birds in Cyprus. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and genotypes in wild birds found at Phassouri Reedbeds (Akrotiri Wetlands), Cyprus. Fecal samples of 75 wild birds (Eurasian coot Fulica atra, N = 48; Eurasian teal Anas crecca, N = 20; duck - Anas spp., Ν = 7) were screened for Cryptosporidium by PCR amplification and sequenci

Cyprus has been affected by COVID-19 since March 2019. With a case fatality rate of 2.6% (until June 2020) and the social isolation measures enforced on the population, the population's mental health has been affected. We aimed to assess the mental health burden of the Cypriot population during the outbreak and to explore the potential influence factors. Using a web-based cross-sectional survey, we collected data from 216 volunteers regarding demographic data, COVID-19-related knowledge, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and major depressive symptoms. The overall prevalence of GAD and major

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne disease widespread in the Mediterranean basin, including Cyprus. During the last decades no cases were notified from northern Cyprus, but herein three cases of VL (female: 2, male: 1, median age: 24.6 months) diagnosed during their hospital admission between January 2011 and December 2012 are reported. Diagnosis was based on clinical findings; 1 ≥ 1/64 titer positivity of immunofluorescence antibodies, Leishmania amastigotes in Giemsa-stained slides of bone marrow, as well as molecular identification confirmed that in all three the infecting pathog

The last case of polio in Cyprus caused by a wild-type poliovirus occurred in 1995. Since then Cyprus belongs to the countries considered poliovirus-free by the WHO. The aim of this study was to confirm the absence of any circulating wild-type polioviruses and to monitor vaccine-derived polioviruses in Cyprus by analysis of sewages. During the course of this study no wild-type polioviruses were identified, although the identification of viable oral poliovirus vaccine isolates confirmed the presence and circulation of poliovirus vaccine strains in sewage in Cyprus.

A 3.8-year-old Italian girl presenting with high fever and headache developed a decrease in the state of consciousness, apneas, bradycardia thus requiring intensive care and mechanical ventilation. Sandfly fever due to Cyprus virus, previously not reported in a child, outside an endemic area, must be included in the differential diagnosis of acute encephalopathy with apparently no explanation from the usual laboratory work-up.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major global public health problem. In the Republic of Cyprus, the estimated prevalence of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) among the general population is 0.6%, while the CHC prevalence among people who inject drugs (PWID) is estimated at 46%. Direct-acting antivirals that can eliminate HCV are not yet widely available in the Republic of Cyprus. However, when direct-acting antivirals become available, a long-term strategic plan to guide elimination efforts will be needed to maximize the effect of treatment.
AIM: To determine the programmatic target
