Levels of human chorionic gonadotropin in breast cyst fluid.

The results of dosage of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in 75 breast cyst fluids taken from 61 patients suffering from breast gross cystic disease (BGCD), 13 of which had multiple mono and/or bilateral cysts are discussed. The corresponding sera were also examined. Assays were carried out using the ELISA method. For comparison, HCG levels were also determined in 21 breast cyst fluids using RIA method. In 66.7% of the breast cyst fluids examined the hormone levels were higher than normal serum values. Corresponding sera showed HCG to be within the range of normal levels. In 5 patients the m

Epidermal growth factor levels in human breast cyst fluid.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) seems to modulate the in vitro and in vivo growth of normal and neoplastic breast cells. We determined, by a radio-receptor assay, EGF levels in cyst fluid and in plasma of patients with gross cystic disease of the breast. The mean levels of EGF were lower in plasma than in breast cyst fluid (BCF) (p less than 0.001). In BCF of apocrine cysts we found higher EGF levels than in flattened cysts (p less than 0.001). The EGF content of apocrine BCF seems to be under sex steroid hormone control, being higher in reproductive age than in post menopause (p less than 0.05)

Oestradiol and epidermal growth factor in breast cyst fluid.

Gross cystic breast disease may be categorised into 2 groups according to the intracystic cation ratios (Na+/K+ less than 3 and Na+/K+ greater than 3). It has been suggested that women in the low electrolyte ratio group may be at higher risk of developing breast cancer. Epidermal growth factor concentrations in breast cyst fluid were significantly higher in the low than in the high electrolyte ratio group but there was no significant difference in oestradiol concentrations between the two groups of breast cysts. A negative correlation was obtained between intracystic concentrations of epiderma

Acid and alkaline phosphatase activity in bone-cyst fluid.

The acid and alkaline phosphatase activity in fluid aspirated from solitary bone cysts in six patients was measured, and large increases in the concentration of acid phosphatase were found. In some cases this increase was reflected in venous blood concentrations. The significance of these findings for the pathogenesis and the management of solitary bone cyst is discussed.

Kidney and breast cysts: a comparative study of fluids.

The contributions of amino acids to the overall osmotic activity of cyst fluids were sought in this comparative study of fluids from the cysts of autosomal dominant polycystic disease (ADPKD) and gross cystic disease of the breast (GCDB). Fluids (n = 18) from 18 women with GCDB and from 8 patients with ADPKD (n = 25), grouped on the basis of sodium concentrations, were analyzed for potassium, chloride, protein, and osmolality by routine methods and for amino acids by reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. Similarities between kidney and breast cyst fluids included relative isosmol

Lipids status in human breast cyst fluids.

Benign mammary gross cystic disease is the most common breast lesion; women with apocrine changes of epithelium lining the cysts are at higher risk for developing breast cancer than the normal population. Total cholesterol, high- and low-density lipoproteins fractions, triglycerides and phospholipids, lipase activity and total lipid concentrations were measured in cyst fluids and sera from 89 women affected by gross cystic breast disease. Total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein content were significantly (P < 0.001) greater in pooled cyst fluids than normal sera. Moreover, data analyses

The biochemistry of breast cyst fluids and duct secretions.

The ratio of potassium to sodium concentrations in breast fluids has led other investigators to the subclassification of cysts into two types: 1) apocrine (secretory) cysts with high potassium and low sodium, and 2) attenuated (flattened) cell cysts with low potassium and high sodium content. Apocrine cells are thought by some to actively secrete potassium. Cell typing is considered important as apocrine cysts are more likely to be bilateral, multiple, recurrent, and serve as markers for epithelial cell atypia. A retrospective study of the biochemical analyses of 58 cyst fluids and 28 duct sec

Posttraumatic cerebrospinal fluid cyst of the orbit. Case report.

A 27-year-old man sustained a fracture of the orbital roof and a basofrontal dural tear in a motor-vehicle accident. One week later, he developed an orbitocranial dural fistula manifested by an orbital cyst, pulsatile proptosis, and serous drainage from the eye. Specific diagnosis was established only after computerized tomography metrizamide cisternography demonstrated direct communication of the orbital cyst with the subarachnoid space. The pertinent literature is reviewed.

Apocrine cells in breast cyst fluid and their relationship to cyst type: a morphometric study.

The morphology of apocrine cells exfoliated in breast cyst fluid (BCF) was studied in 78 BCF samples obtained from 39 premenopausal patients with gross cystic disease who were bearing two simultaneously aspirated cysts. 57/78 samples showed cell clusters suitable for computer-assisted cytometry. This was performed on 5820 cells using a Leitz Texture Analysis System (TAS). We measured the surface areas of cytoplasm, nucleus and nucleolus; we also calculated the nuclear/cytoplasmic (N/C), nuclear/nucleolar (N/n) ratios and the nuclear roundness factor (RF). Cysts were divided according to the ca

Accumulation of active androgens in breast cyst fluids.

80 breast cyst fluids (BCF) from 57 patients were divided by K+/Na+ ratio: 56 with ratio over 1 (type I) and 24 with ratio less than 1 (type II). Significantly higher amounts of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHAS) were found in type I than in type II cysts. A positive relation was found between testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in both types. DHAS was significantly correlated with testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in type I casts only. In 52 patients, blood was sampled after cyst evacuation. Testosterone was significantly higher in blood than in B

Digoxinlike materials in human breast cyst fluids.

Digoxinlike materials (DLMs) are compounds found in animals that (1) cross-react with digoxin antibodies in specific radioimmunoassay procedures and (2) bind to Na+, K(+)-ATPase and inhibit its activity. DLMs may play a part in the regulation of electrolyte composition. We have determined DLM concentrations in breast cyst fluids and found that these fluids were a rich source of DLMs. Total DLMs were elevated in fluids with type 1 electrolyte composition (high K+ and low Na+ content) when compared to fluids with type 2 composition (low K+ and high Na+ content). Chromatographic studies showed th

Glycosaminoglycans in fluid aspirates from odontogenic cysts.

Glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans were analysed in keratinizing and nonkeratinizing odontogenic cyst fluids. Hyaluronic acid showed the highest incidence and abundance amongst the glycosaminoglycans detected. Appreciable amounts of chondroitin-4-sulphate were also observed, particularly in the dental cysts, with lesser amounts of the other glycosaminoglycans. Heparan sulphate showed a higher incidence and abundance in the keratocyst than the other cysts, whilst chondroitin-6-sulphate could not be detected in any of the cysts. A considerable proportion of the glycosaminoglycans of the fluids

[Endocrinously active parathyroid cysts. Their diagnosis by the determination of intact parathormone in the cyst fluid].

A 53-year-old woman with recurrent nephrolithiasis was found to have hypercalcaemia of 3.12 mmol/l and an intact parathormone level of 166 pg/ml, indicating primary hyperparathyroidism. Preoperative ultrasound examination to localize the parathyroid adenoma revealed a clear fluid-containing cyst in the right lobe of the thyroid. The aspirated fluid had an intact parathormone level of 306 pg/ml, twice that in serum. The cyst was removed surgically. 14 days postoperatively calcium and parathormone levels in serum had become normal without any calcium administration. Measuring the concentration o

Mediastinal Bronchogenic Cysts: Demonstration of Fluid-Fluid Level in Bronchoscopic US Imaging.

We report the findings for 2 patients with a fluid-fluid level seen on endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) images of bronchogenic cysts. The EBUS images demonstrated a well-circumscribed cyst with a fluid-fluid level showing an anechoic upper part and a relatively hyperechoic lower part. A fluid-fluid level on EBUS imaging of a bronchogenic cyst, which can help confirm the cystic nature of the lesion, has not been previously reported. EBUS-based confirmation of these cysts using fluid-fluid levels may help avoid unnecessary aspiration of the lesions.
