Hemorrhagic cystitis can occur 6 months to 10 years after pelvic irradiation. Various palliative treatment alternatives may be unsuccessful in the management of severe hemorrhagic cystitis, so that in rare cases radical surgery will be the last resort.A 77-year-old man with persistent bleeding due to hemorrhagic cystitis after radiotherapy for prostate cancer was initially treated with conservative measures. All of these treatment methods were unsuccessful. His condition deteriorated and became life-threatening. As a last resort, laparoscopic cystoprostatectomy and mini-laparotomy ileal condui

Of 8 patients with symptoms of advanced cystitis due to pelvic radiation treated with hyperbaric oxygen 7 are persistently improved during followup. All 6 patients treated for gross hematuria requiring hospitalization have been free of symptoms for an average of 24 months (range 6 to 43 months). One patient treated for stress incontinence currently is dry despite little change in bladder capacity, implying salutary effect from hyperbaric oxygen on the sphincter mechanism. One patient with radiation-induced prostatitis failed to respond. This experience suggests that hyperbaric oxygen should be

Sterile hemorrhagic cystitis developed in 5 dogs after treatment with cyclophosphamide. Four dogs were being treated with various antineoplastic protocols, and the fifth dog had recurrent immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. In all instances, clinical signs of hematuria and stranguria persisted after cyclophosphamide administration was discontinued. Three dogs required cystotomy to remove necrotic mucosa and calculi. The other 2 dogs were treated with intravesicularly administered dimethyl sulfoxide to decrease inflammation and to inhibit fibroplasia of the bladder wall. In 4 dogs, clinical signs

An outbreak of hematuria occurred from May 20 to May 23, 1975, among employees of a chemical packaging plant. Nine of 22 workers who packaged the insecticide chlordimeform in a separate shed became severely ill with abdominal pain, dysuria, urgency to void, or hematuria. None of 18 persons who worked in other areas of the plant were affected. Four additional workers who had packaged the chemical during the previous year had a history of similar symptoms. Bladder biopsy specimens from three affected persons showed severe hemorrhagic cystitis; chlordimeform and 2-methyl-4-chloroaniline, a metabo

OBJECTIVES: Hyaluronic acid is a protective barrier of the urothelium. A damaged glycosaminoglycan layer may increase the possibility of bacterial adherence and infection. This damage is proposed to be a causative factor in the development of interstitial cystitis, common urinary tract infections, and hemorrhagic cystitis due to posthematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The aim of this article was to review the available data regarding the use of hyaluronic acid as an alternative treatment of the above-mentioned conditions.
METHODS: Articles relevant to our review that were archived by Sep

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis is a complication of pelvic radiotherapy, with an incidence of up to 5%. The resultant hematuria may be severe and refractory to conservative measures. Our objective was to describe the pattern of inpatient treatments among a cohort of patients with radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis requiring pharmacological management.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case series to identify all inpatient admissions at a single institution during which patients with radiation cystitis underwent pharmacological intervention for refractory hematuria

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a well-recognized problem that is regularly observed after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The published data does not report on the potential risk factors for the viral-induced HC that might require prophylactic treatments.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all adult patients who underwent allogeneic HSCT at Jules Bordet Institute between 1992 and 2013. Our institutional protocol consists in monitoring the patient for signs and symptoms of HC on a daily basis during the initial admission for HSCT, then on

OBJECTIVE: To emphasize prognostic factors of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on hematuria at 3 and 12 months in the context of a radiation cystitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cohort of 134 patients was treated from 2008 to 2013 in the hyperbaric medicine center of Toulouse University Hospital, France for radiation cystitis. Hematuria was ranked using the SOMA score. HBOT has been applied according to a standardized protocol of 20 renewable sessions, with pure oxygen to 2.5 ATA. The median number of sessions at 12 months was 50.
RESULTS: HBOT had an efficacy of 83% at 3 months and 81% at 12 m

A case is reported in which docetaxel was used to treat a patient with hormone refractory metastatic prostate cancer. The treatment was terminated at the third course of docetaxel following the development of hemorrhagic cystitis. This reaction was unexpected, as it is not a known reaction to docetaxel. Hemorrhagic cystitis has been associated with cyclophosphamide, where the metabolite acrolein has been implicated. The mechanism of this reaction from docetaxel is not yet known.

BACKGROUND: BK virus-associated hemorrhagic cystitis (BKV-HC) is a severe complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), but antiviral treatment for this condition has not been evaluated.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective survey on the safety and outcome of cidofovir treatment for patients with BKV-HC in centers affiliated with the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
RESULTS: From 1 April 2004 to 31 December 2007, 62 patients received a diagnosis of BKV-HC after a median interval of 35 days after HSCT (range, 3-577 days). Fifty-seven patien

An 80-year-old woman presented with gross hematuria and clot retention about 20 years after postoperative radiation therapy for uterine cancer. Endoscopic evaluation revealed a hyperemic bladder mucosa and bleeding foci localized to the posterior wall. Electrocauterization and continuous bladder irrigation with normal saline failed to resolve the hemorrhage, Maalox (aluminum hydroxide/magnesium hydroxide) was instilled intravesically. The events of gross hematuria and clot retention recurred frequently, cotton pledgets soaked in 5% formalin were placed endoscopically onto the bleeding sites of

The purpose of our study was to assess if spinacetin (SPC), a flavonoid found in spinach, can alleviate the cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced changes in cystometric and inflammatory parameters indicative of the development of hemorrhagic cystitis. The animal experiments were conducted in female Wistar rats. The cohort of 60 animals was grouped as follows: I-control, II-CYP group, III-SPC group, and IV-CYP + SPC group. The cystometry and biochemical analyses were performed after a fortnight of SPC administration. SPC was found to restore normal cystometric parameters in CYP-induced cystitis and, s

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhagic cystitis is defined by the presence of hematuria, lower urinary tract symptoms and cystoscopy findings indicative of underlying urothelial damage. It is common in patients with prior radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies. The severity of the bleeding can vary from mild to severe hematuria refractory to conservative therapy and with a continuous need for transfusions. Treatment can be challenging not only by the lack of clear guidelines but also the multiple comorbidities of these patients. Urinary diversion with or without cystectomy should be reserved for those who ha

Hemorrhagic cystitis is the main adverse effect associated with the clinical use of oxazaphosphorine, resulting in increased oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokines, which culminate in injury of the bladder tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of isopropyl gallate (IPG) against ifosfamide (IFOS)-induced hemorrhagic cystitis in mice. The induction of the hemorrhagic cystitis model was carried out using a single dose of IFOS (400 mg/kg, i.p.) four hours after oral pretreatment with IPG (6.25, 12.5, 25, and 50 mg/kg) or saline (vehicle). Mesna (positive contr

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a morbid condition for patients and can be challenging for urologists to manage. There are many potential contributing etiologies and the severity of bleeding can be variable. It is important to consider each clinical scenario when formulating management strategies in order to provide the highest quality of care to patients. We provide a review of the literature including diagnosis and treatment options.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a literature search on PubMed using the following keywords: hemorrhagic cystitis, cystitis, gross hematuria, int

PURPOSE: We evaluate the clinical presentation, management and outcomes of patients undergoing cystectomy for refractory hemorrhagic cystitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified 21 patients with refractory hematuria treated with cystectomy at our institution between 2000 and 2012. Clot evacuation, bladder fulguration and bladder irrigation had failed in all patients before cystectomy. In addition, 45% of patients had received prior intravesical therapy (aminocaproic acid, alum or formalin), hyperbaric oxygen therapy (25%), nephrostomy tube placement for attempted urinary diversion (15%) and

Hemorrhagic cystitis is a common stem cell transplantation-related complication. The incidence of early-onset hemorrhagic cystitis, which is related to the pretransplant conditioning regimen, has decreased with the concomitant use of mesna and hyperhydration. However, late-onset hemorrhagic cystitis, which is usually caused by the BK virus, continues to develop. Although the BK virus is the most common pathogenic microorganism of poststem cell transplantation late-onset hemorrhagic cystitis, pediatricians outside the hemato-oncology and nephrology specialties tend to be unfamiliar with hemorrh
