PURPOSE: Today, many patients with voiding dysfunction select suprapubic cystostomy (SPC) instead of clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) for practical reasons. There is thus a need to reconsider SPC as a management for voiding dysfunction. We designed SPC with timed drainage (TSPCD) and evaluated its effectiveness compared with continuous drainage with a urine bag (CSPCD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2006 and January 2010, a total of 82 patients underwent SPC. Patients undergoing SPC were randomly assigned to CSPCD or TSPCD. Patient characteristics, complications, and the resu

Pancreatic transplantation is becoming accepted therapy for a select subset of patients with type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes. At many centers, whole-organ transplants with pancreatico-duodeno-cystostomy for drainage of exocrine secretions is the preferred surgical procedure. We obtained 21 cystograms in nine patients who underwent this procedure who were suspected of having anastomotic leaks and possible abscess. Positive findings included extrinsic bladder compression (nine patients), filling of the transplanted duodenal segment (three patients), edematous bladder wall (four patients), intr

Background: Neurogenic bladder (NB) in children may lead to recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), renal deterioration, and a reduced quality of life. Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is the standard of care, but in some patients, CIC may be unfeasible due to anatomical, sensory, or compliance issues. Button cystostomy (BC) has emerged as a minimally invasive, bladder-preserving alternative. This study aimed to assess the feasibility, safety, and outcomes in the long-term of BC in pediatric NB patients. Methods: Retrospective analysis was conducted on children with NB who underwent

BACKGROUND: Circumstances such as the inability to pass a retrograde urinary catheter or a lack of surgeon availability may prevent immediate relief of urethral obstruction in dogs. In such situations, a cystostomy tube may be placed with ultrasound guidance to allow urinary diversion until further treatment is possible.
KEY FINDINGS: A case of a 5-year-old male neutered Swiss Mountain dog with an obstructive urolith at the level of the os penis is used to describe the technique. Multiple attempts to pass a urinary catheter under sedation were unsuccessful. A pigtail cystostomy tube was place

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility, effectiveness and practicability of transurethral enucleation plus pneumocystostomy rotary cut (TUE + PCRC) for large benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
METHODS: We performed TUE + PCRC for 26 BPH patients aged 62 - 85 years with the prostate volume of 80 - 165 ml. We conducted transurethral enucleation of the hyperplastic prostate glands and pushed them into the bladder, followed by bladder puncture for pneumo-cystostomy rotary cut.
RESULTS: All the surgical procedures were successfully accomplished, with the mean surgical time of 41 (32 - 54) min

A 64-year-old male patient with a serum PSA value of 51.91 ng ml(-1) and an magnetic resonance imaging scan suggestive of prostate cancer was admitted with bilateral hydronephrosis and anemia. A suprapubic cystostomy had been inserted 6 months earlier, owing to voiding difficulties. The patient was found to have huge multiple bladder stones and a massively thickened bladder wall. A sectio alta with bladder stone removal and bilateral ureteral stenting was performed. Histopathological examination revealed the growth of prostate cancer cells in the cystostomy tube needle tract.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the roles of suprapubic cystostomy in patients with neurogenic bladder and analyzed the complications and their courses.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed 118 patients with neurogenic bladder managed with suprapubic cystostomy. The original diseases were spinal cord injury in 90, degenerative disease of the central nervous system in 15, spina bifida in 6, cerebral palsy in 3, pontine bleeding in 1, Parkinson's disease in 1, brain tumor in 1, and dysgenesis of the external sphincter in 1. Fifty-six (62.2%) of spinal cord-injured patients demonstrated cervical damage. Ren

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the invaginated sleeve technique for continent cystostomy in humans.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over the past 5 years six patients have undergone this operative procedure. An essential principle utilized in the technique is the property of partial thickness bladder grafts to stretch longitudinally, so that each tubularized pedicle graft could be directed transmurally and extended extravesically to reach the skin of the lower abdominal wall. As a consequence a urothelial-lined tract, both extravesically and through the bladder wall, was provided for intermittent self-catheter

A 10-year-old, spayed female Dalmatian was diagnosed with granulomatous urethritis causing urethral obstruction. Due to the extensive involvement of the urethra, a urethrostomy was not possible. A commercially available, silicone, low-profile gastrostomy tube was placed as a prepubic cystostomy tube to achieve urinary diversion. This tube is easy to use, has a one-way valve, and lies flush with the skin margin, thereby decreasing the likelihood of inadvertent removal. This tube should be considered to achieve long-term urinary diversion when urethral involvement is extensive.

Treatment of a 3-month-old male goat with obstructive urolithiasis by means of percutaneous tube cystostomy and vesicular irrigation with a chemolysis solution is described. The cystostomy tube was inserted percutaneously with ultrasonographic guidance. Patency of the urethra was reestablished with no clinical evidence of urethral stricture or recurrence of obstruction during the following 12 months. Results in this goat suggest that percutaneous tube cystostomy may be an economical alternative to surgical cystostomy tube placement. Chemical dissolution of calcium phosphate uroliths with a com

The influence of urinary diversion procedures on urethral healing was studied in 15 male dogs following transection and anastomosis of the intrapelvic portions of their urethras. Dogs were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups and had urine diverted from the surgical site by indwelling transurethral catheter, cystostomy catheter, or a combination of transurethral catheter and cystostomy catheter. There were no statistically significant differences in urethral healing when considering the different diversion methods, based on clinical, radiographic, and urodynamic parameters evalua

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 6-year-old castrated male Bactrian camel was evaluated because of a 14hour history of oliguria and stranguria that progressed to anuria.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Perineal urethral pulsations and intermittent tail flagging with no accompanying urination were observed. Ultrasonography of the urethra revealed multiple hyperechoic foci with shadowing artifact indicative of calculi present in the penile urethra distal to the sigmoid flexure. Rectal palpation revealed a pulsating hard urethra and intact distended urinary bladder. Further clinical examination was not possible because o

PURPOSE: We determined whether endoscopic realignment or cystostomy would provide the best immediate management of pelvic fracture urethral injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 590 patients with pelvic fracture urethral injury. Of the patients 522 were included in analysis due to strict criteria, including 129 in the endoscopic realignment group and 393 in the cystostomy group. Data on stricture formation and length, intervention technique and long-term functional outcomes were analyzed.
RESULTS: In the endoscopic realignment group stricture developed in

BACKGROUND: Patients with spinal cord injury and a chronic indwelling urinary catheter are known to have an increased risk of bladder malignancy. However, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the epidermis around a suprapubic cystostomy is relatively rare. Here, we report a case of lower abdominal SCC arising from the suprapubic cystostomy tract.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old man with a complete spinal cord injury was referred to our hospital with a chief complaint of an abdominal mass. Abdominal enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed a 7-cm mass surrounding the suprapubic cystostomy and bil

Subcutaneous and scrotal emphysema are rare complications of suprapubic cystostomy. We present here a rare case of an 81-year-old man with colovesical fistula who had severe subcutaneous and scrotal emphysema after percutaneous suprapubic cystostomy was performed. We inserted a new Foley catheter via the urethra, removed the suprapubic cystostomy and incised his scrotal emphysema for open drainage. The patient's subcutaneous emphysema slowly healed.

A man in his 50s with an intellectual disability underwent a cystostomy for neurogenic bladder, followed by regular catheter exchange. Eighteen years later, the patient developed hematuria. Computed tomography and cystoscopy revealed a bladder tumor despite negative urinary cytology. Transurethral resection of the tumor confirmed the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Radical cystectomy was performed due to muscle invasion. Histopathological analysis revealed a pT3aN1M0 squamous cell carcinoma. No adjuvant therapy was administered, and the patient has remained recurrence-free for seven year

BACKGROUND Septic shock is highly prevalent in clinical practice. Some cases present insidiously and have poor prognoses. We report a case of a patient with a dislodged catheter who developed septic shock during a cystostomy procedure. CASE REPORT Our patient was a 76-year-old man with a history of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and cerebral infarction. He had been confined to bed for a long time following a cerebral infarction and had impaired consciousness. One year prior, he developed urinary retention due to benign prostatic hyperplasia. As he did not undergo surgical treatment, a

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of minimally invasive percutaneous cystostomy with ureteroscopic pneumatic lithotripsy for treating calculus in bladder diverticula. Percutaneous cystostomy with ureteroscopic pneumatic lithotripsy was performed on six elderly male patients with calculi in bladder diverticula, who could not be treated with transurethral ureteroscopic lithotripsy. The stones were successfully removed from all patients, with no complications such as bladder perforation, rupture, urethritis or cystitis. The surgery time was 15-60 min, with an average time
