Cytodiagnosis of filarial infections from an endemic area.

OBJECTIVE: To throw light on cytologic findings as a possible mode of diagnosis of lymphatic filariasis. STUDY DESIGN: Filariasis has worldwide distribution, but lymphatic filariasis predominantly affects tropical and subtropical regions. Demonstration of microfilaremia, the specific test for diagnosis of lymphatic filariasis, often shows false negative results in endemic areas. The present study, done in an endemic area, showed the presence of microfilariae or adult worms of Wuchereria bancrofti in fine needle aspirates collected from amicrofilariaemic cases. In a few cases the discovery was

Aspiration of musculoskeletal tumors for cytodiagnosis and DNA analysis.

Preoperative fine-needle aspirates of 25 soft tissue tumors and four bone tumors were used for cytodiagnosis and flow cytometric DNA ploidy analysis. The results were compared with the histopathologic diagnosis and flow cytometric DNA ploidy analysis on tissue samples after surgery. There was good agreement between the cytodiagnoses and histopathologic diagnoses with regard to benign tumor or sarcoma. There was good agreement between the ploidy determinations in aspirates and tissue samples in 20 out of the 26 tumors that could be analyzed. Aneuploid cell populations were found in 13 tumors cy…

Cytodiagnosis of idiopathic calcinosis cutis: a case report.

We report a case of idiopathic calcinosis cutis diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology in a 50-yr-old female who presented with a subcutaneous swelling near the left iliac crest. Cytological finding of amorphous calcium salts with histiocytes and the appropriate clinical background led to the cytodiagnosis of idiopathic calcinosis cutis as subsequently confirmed on histopathology. Pitfalls in the diagnosis of calcinosis cutis on cytology smears are also discussed.

Cytodiagnosis of erythema nodosum leprosum. A case report.

BACKGROUND: The application of cytology in leprosy has been restricted to the evaluation of morphologic and bacterial indices by slit skin smears to facilitate diagnosis of cases according to the Ridley-Jopling scale. Isolated reports have now documented the use of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of leprosy. CASE: A 45-year-old male presented with the abrupt onset of multiple nodular eruptions all over the body. The clinical diagnosis was Sweet's syndrome. FNAC showed numerous neutrophils in a background of foamy macrophages. Special stains revealed the presence of a l

The cytodiagnosis of meningeal involvement in familial haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.

The cytological appearances of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in two cases of familial haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL) are described. The presence of numerous lymphocytes and immature macrophages in the CSF, some of which showed lymphohistiocytosis, was indicative of meningeal involvement. The appearance of large numbers of immature macrophages indicated rapid deterioration and death within a few weeks. Furthermore, some CSF samples taken at times when the patients were asymptomatic contained suspicious cells, indicating asymptomatic persistence of the meningeal lesions. Thus, cytolog

Intraoperative cytodiagnosis of lung tumors by needle aspiration.

Rapid-stain cytologic evaluation of needle aspirates are a recent adjunct to diagnosis and staging of lung neoplasms. The benefits of this approach include ease of sampling from deep and remote lesions and the fact that the results are generally available within 10 minutes. In the past 2 years, we did 187 needle aspirations for cytopathological evaluation in 70 patients at 51 thoracotomies and 21 mediastinoscopies. The cytologic findings from aspirates of lymph nodes, mediastinal masses, and intrapulmonary lesions were compared with diagnosis obtained by histopathological techniques. Quick-sta

[Cytodiagnosis of pathologic changes in the renal pelvis and ureter].

In 80 cases of roentgenologic filling defects in renal pelvis and ureter, which could be determined exactly preoperatively, we could confirm the diagnostic value of cytology from washings of renal pelvis and ureter (lavage cytology) especially in preoperative diagnosis of carcinoma of renal pelvis and ureter. Twenty of 25 tumors (80%) were detected preoperatively. There were no false positive results. The diagnostic reliability of this method was more accurate than with normal exfoliative urinary cytology from other authors. The results are discussed together with the literature.
