The prognosis of mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome can be improved when antitumor therapies such as total skin electron beam irradiation, topical nitrogen mustard, or systemic cytostatic agents are given as soon as the diagnosis is established. The goal of the study was to examine the state of primary hepatocytes of rats with toxic hepatitis induced by combination of CCl4 and ethanol. Fluorescent immunocytochemical analysis demonstrated that normal and pathologic hepatocytes in culture formed actin cytoskeleton, cell-cell and cell-matrix contacts. Fifty adrenalectomy specimens containing normal (n = 3), hyperplastic (n = 4), or neoplastic (n = 43) medullary tissue were subjected to quantitative measurements of DNA content. Of the 43 pheochromocytomas, 16 were neoplasms inherited in the setting of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A. Five of 27 sporadic pheochromocytomas followed a malignant clinical course. The DNA content of spermatogonia was studied by cytophotometric quantification in the testes of cryptorchid children and adults, as well as in age-matched control males. In most cases, the average DNA content of spermatogonia was significantly increased in the cryptorchid testes of children with uni- or bilateral cryptorchidism, as well as in the contralateral scrotal testes of children with unilateral cryptorchidism. The DNA content in cytotrophoblast (CTB) and syncytiotrophoblast (STB) cell nuclei was assayed in tissue sections of 7 hydatidiform moles (HM) and 27 choriocarcinomas (CH). 52 salivary adenocarcinomas of the years 1965-1980 from the files of the Salivary Gland Registry, Institute of Pathology, University of Hamburg, were evaluated retrospectively with regard to clinical follow up and cytochemically assessed nuclear DNA content. Papanicolaou stained smears of various cervical lesions diagnosed as "suspicious" by routine cytology were reviewed with regard to different cell types leading to this diagnosis. Two-wavelength scanning DNA cytophotometry was used for DNA and protein estimation in human ventricular myocytes. In many hypertrophic hearts weighing more than 500 g the DNA content assessed by ploidy of myocytes, was within the range of normal adult variation (4-10c, where c is the haploid DNA content). In this study we analysed DNA-ploidy as a potential prognostic parameter in ductal pancreatic carcinoma.
