Harmful algal blooms and the toxins produced during these events are a human and environmental health concern worldwide. Saxitoxin and its derivatives are potent natural aquatic neurotoxins produced by certain freshwater cyanobacteria and marine algae species during these bloom events. Saxitoxins effects on human health are well studied, however its effects on aquatic biota are still largely unexplored. This work aims at evaluating the effects of a pulse acute exposure (24 h) of the model cladoceran Daphnia magna to 30 μg saxitoxin L-1, which corresponds to the safety guideline established by

Microcystis spp. produce diverse secondary metabolites within freshwater cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) around the world. In addition to the biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) encoding known compounds, Microcystis genomes harbor numerous BGCs of unknown function, indicating a poorly understood chemical repertoire. While recent studies show that Microcystis produces several metabolites in the lab and field, little work has focused on analyzing the abundance and expression of its broader suite of BGCs during cyanoHAB events. Here, we use metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approac

Two Gram-stain-negative, facultatively aerobic, oxidase- and catalase-positive, motile (by means of a polar flagellum) rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated BS-M-Sm-2T and MA40-2T, were isolated from marine algae. Growth was optimal at pH 7.0-8.0 and 2.0-3.0% (w/v) NaCl, with temperature optima of 25°C for BS-M-Sm-2T and 25-30°C for MA40-2T. Ubiquinone-8 was the sole respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids common to both strains were C16:0, summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c), and summed feature 8 (C18:1 ω7c and/or C18:1 ω6c), while BS-M-Sm-2T additionally contained C12:0 and C

Oil enters the environment through natural and anthropogenic sources and poses a serious threat to water and soil. We hypothesized that algae and their associated prokaryotic communities from natural oil seeps are robust systems capable of surviving and degrading anthropogenic oil spills. We isolated Euglena sp. together with its closely associated prokaryotes from a natural oil seep in Germany and tested its oil degradation potential in laboratory cultivation experiments. Oil mineralization was monitored using reverse stable isotope labeling (RSIL), and the associated microbiome was character

Microalgae can produce fuels, nutraceutical ingredients, and materials useful in environmental remediation, but their wider use still depends on better strains and cheaper processing. Low-temperature plasma (LTP) technologies, including atmospheric and room-temperature plasma (ARTP), are emerging as versatile tools for microalgal biotechnology. This review critically examines dose-dependent LTP-microalgae interactions across the cultivation-to-biorefinery continuum. At low doses, plasma-derived reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) act as signaling molecules, modulating phytohormone p

Chloroviruses were first described in the late 1970s, and this opened a new area in virology. These giant DNA viruses, capable of infecting unicellular eukaryotic algae, are ubiquitous in inland waters and have been isolated from various locations worldwide, revealing extensive and complex genetic diversity. These viruses belong to the genus Chlorovirus, family Phycodnaviridae, order Algavirales. Currently, only six species are officially recognized by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), but recent data from our group suggest the existence of many others. Brevenal is a nontoxic short-chain trans-syn polyether that competes with brevetoxin (PbTx) for the active site on voltage-sensitive sodium channels. The PbTxs are highly potent polyether toxins produced during blooms of several species of marine dinoflagellates, most notably Karenia brevis. Blooms of K. brevis have been associated with massive fish kills, marine mammal poisoning, and are potentially responsible for adverse human health effects such as respiratory irritation and airway constriction in beach-goers. Additionally, the consumption of shellfish contaminated with PbTxs results in ne

A 5-year-old female spayed Shetland Sheepdog Mix dog was evaluated for a history of recent seizure activity, progressive hind limb ataxia, polyuria, and polydipsia and no history of gastrointestinal signs. Physical examination findings included conscious proprioceptive deficits, ataxia, and anterior uveitis along with a hypermature cataract in the right eye. Results of a CBC, serum biochemical profile, urinalysis, and computed tomography scan of the brain were unremarkable. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed marked eosinophilic pleocytosis and rare organisms consistent with Prototheca

Ocean ecosystems are undergoing accelerating disruption from human impacts such as climate change. Warming ocean temperatures drive pathogenic outbreaks, increase harmful algal blooms, and cause coral stress. These can have serious consequences for marine ecosystems, human health and the aquaculture industry, representing a critical One Health issue. Monitoring key marine species offers valuable insights, but current methods are resource-intensive, low-resolution, and unsuitable for frequent deployment. Here, we introduce a low-cost, field-deployable CRISPR biosensing platform for detecting ma

Hamilton Harbour is an impaired embayment of Lake Ontario that experiences seasonal algal blooms despite decades of remedial efforts. To study the harbour's cyanobacterial and heterotrophic bacterial communities, we extracted and sequenced community DNA from surface water samples collected biweekly from different sites during summer and fall. Assembled contigs were annotated at the phylum level, and Cyanobacteria were further characterized at order and species levels. Actinobacteria were most abundant in early summer, while Cyanobacteria were dominant in mid-summer. Microcystis aeruginosa and

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms have increased globally, likely in part due to climate change and anthropogenic eutrophication, elevating exposure of humans and other terrestrial and aquatic animals to cyanotoxins through drinking water, food chains, and recreational activities. Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), the most prevalent microcystin congener, is well known for its hepatotoxicity, yet accumulating evidence indicates that it also exerts reproductive and developmental toxicity in mammals. This review summarizes recent experimental and epidemiological studies indicating that MC-LR disrupts rep

The secondary outbreak of cyanobacteria after algicide treatment has been a serious problem to water ecosystems. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an algaecide widely used in practice, but similar re-bloom problems are inevitably encountered. Our work found that Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) temporarily hibernates after H2O2 treatment, but there is still a risk of secondary outbreaks. Interestingly, the dormant period was as long as 20 and 28 days in 5 mg L-1 and 20 mg L-1 H2O2 treatment groups, respectively, but the photosynthetic activity was both restored much earlier (within 14 days). BACKGROUND: Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is a significant public health problem due to dinoflagellates. It is responsible for one of the highest reported incidence of seafood-borne illness and Groupers are commonly reported as a source of CFP due to their position in the food chain. With the role of recent climate change on harmful algal blooms, CFP cases might become more frequent and more geographically widespread. Since there is no appropriate treatment for CFP, the most efficient solution is to regulate fish consumption. Such a strategy can only work if the fish sold are correctly identi

Gambierdiscus is a genus of benthic dinoflagellates found worldwide. Some species produce neurotoxins (maitotoxins and ciguatoxins) that bioaccumulate and cause ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP), a potentially fatal food-borne illness that is common worldwide in tropical regions. The investigation of toxigenic species of Gambierdiscus in CFP endemic regions in Australia is necessary as a first step to determine which species of Gambierdiscus are related to CFP cases occurring in this region. In this study, we characterized five strains of Gambierdiscus collected from Heron Island, Australia, a re

Organic phosphorus (Po) plays a pivotal role in watershed biogeochemical cycling and lake eutrophication, but its potential as an indicator of Anthropocene stratigraphic change remains insufficiently understood. This study integrates carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses with 31P NMR spectroscopy of representative plants, soils, and sediment profiles to elucidate the compositional characteristics, depositional history, and anthropogenic linkages of Po in an alpine meadow lake (Yamdrok Lake, YH) and a temperate forest oligotrophic lake (Sihailongwan Lake, LW), and further compares these systems

BACKGROUND: The variability in gene organization and architecture of green algal mitochondrial genomes is only recently being studied on a finer taxonomic scale. Sequenced mt genomes from the chlorophycean orders Volvocales and Sphaeropleales exhibit considerable variation in size, content, and structure, even among closely related genera. However, sampling of mt genomes on a within-family scale is still poor and the sparsity of information precludes a thorough understanding of genome evolution in the green algae.
METHODS: Genomic DNA of representative taxa were sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are primarily responsible for the development of male infertility after exposure to γ-irradiation. The present work aimed to assess the ameliorative and therapeutic roles of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the edible seaweed Sargassum virgatum (S. virgatum) on spermatogenesis and infertility in γ-irradiated Wistar rats.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Induction of infertility was performed by exposing the rats to 137Cs-gamma rays, using a single dose of 3.5 Gy. γ-irradiated rats were given the S. virgatum ethanolic (S. virgatum-EtOH)

Microcystin-LR (MCLR) is a cyanobacterial toxin with demonstrated reproductive toxicity and frequently released during harmful algal blooms. In aquatic environments, MCLR is often present with polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs). However, the combined effects of these two pollutants on male reproduction and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. To address this gap, adult male zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to MCLR alone at 0, 2.4, and 24 μg/L or co-exposed with 100 μg/L PSNPs to investigate the effects of PSNPs on MCLR-induced spermatogenic impairment. We found that co-exposur

BACKGROUND: Bovine mastitis caused by Prototheca spp. is the most significant animal disease of algal origin, with an increasing number of cases reported worldwide. Currently, there is no effective treatment, so control requires the culling of infected animals. In Chile, information is limited, and a discrepancy remains in the literature regarding the Prototheca species involved in bovine mastitis.
METHODS: This study aimed to molecularly type and phenotypically characterize Prototheca isolates associated with bovine mastitis in Chile. Sixty-six Prototheca isolates obtained from individual bo

Cyanobacteria are ubiquitous photosynthetic microorganisms considered as important contributors to the formation of Earth's atmosphere and to the process of nitrogen fixation. However, they are also frequently associated with toxic blooms, named cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs). This paper reports on an unusual out-of-season cyanoHAB and its dynamics during the COVID-19 pandemic, in Lake Avernus, South Italy. Fast detection strategy (FDS) was used to assess this phenomenon, through the integration of satellite imagery and biomolecular investigation of the environmental samples.
