Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects >1% of individuals worldwide and is manifested by motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia, as well as non-motor symptoms such as cognitive impairment and depression. Non-pharmacological interventions such as dance therapy are becoming increasingly popular as complementary therapies for PD, in addition to pharmacological treatments that are currently widely available. Dance as a sensorimotor activity stimulates multiple layers of the neural system, including those involved in motor planning and execution, se

Dance and music are foundational human behaviors that likely co-evolved as intertwined modes of social communication, artistic expression, and collective coordination. Despite their intertwined nature, dance and music are typically analyzed in isolation from one another, both in research studies and in applied settings. I present here a proposal for a general framework for conceptualizing the cross-modal relationship between dance and music. This framework is called SpREE and is based on the analysis of four key dimensions relating dance and music: Space, Rhythm, Entrainment, and Expression. S

Study Design Case report. Background An os trigonum can be a source of pain for dancers due to impingement during repetitive ankle plantar flexion movements. Following excision of an os trigonum, it is important to have a gradual, progressive return-to-dance program for optimal recovery. The purpose of this case report is to describe the postoperative management and return-to-dance progression of an adolescent dancer post os trigonum excision. Case Description An adolescent preprofessional female dancer had an extensive history of left posterior heel pain, beginning at age 8, that led to surgi

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the effectiveness of dance intervention to provide evidence of its effects on cognition in people with Parkinson's.
METHODS: A study registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023474696), with searches carried out electronically in five databases (PubMed Central®, Embase, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Scopus Elsevier), over the last 10 years. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane collaboration scale (RoB2 and ROBINS-I).
RESULTS: The studies presented ''low'' and ''moderate'' risks of bias. The instruments to assess cognitive function were heterogeneous. The dance mod

PURPOSE: Dance can encourage physical activity and promote physical, cognitive, and social development for adults who have neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD). Dance is defined as a form of expression that may be structured, exploratory, and/or cultural. Current literature supports the benefits of participation in dance for persons with NDD, however less is known about what characteristics support participation in dance.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review was conducted to synthesize the characteristics of dance interventions, teaching strategies, and outcome measures used to assess the

Dance-based interventions are increasingly used to support mental health and well-being across clinical, community, and educational contexts. However, the review-level evidence remains conceptually and methodologically fragmented. This quality-sensitive umbrella review synthesized 90 review articles identified across five databases. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses were appraised using AMSTAR 2, while scoping, narrative, literature, and clinical reviews were assessed using adapted review-appraisal criteria. Findings from systematic reviews and meta-analyses were used primarily to interpret

Therapeutic dance has been increasingly used as a treatment modality for sexual trauma, yet its evidence-based efficacy has not yet been catalogued. We therefore conducted a systematic review to summarize the existing evidence for therapeutic dance as an intervention for healing after sexual trauma. We searched 5 major databases to identify intervention studies on the use of therapeutic dance for individuals with histories of sexual trauma. Studies were included based on the following criteria: 1) the study involves individuals who have been exposed to sexual trauma; 2) the study reports on an

Group dance is an engaging physical activity that may benefit the prevention and management of sarcopenia among older adults. However, current evidence on this topic is limited. We aimed to evaluate published evidence on group dance for sarcopenia in community dwelling older adults. Studies published in English and Chinese between 2014 and 2024 were identified through searches in MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO via Ovid, CINAHL via EBSCO, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wan Fang, Google Scholar, and Web of Science Core Collection. Two reviewers independently performed screening, data

BACKGROUND: Individuals living with Parkinson's disease (PD) can experience a range of movement disorders that affect mobility and balance and increase the risk of falls. Low health-related quality of life, depression, and anxiety are more common in people with PD than age-matched comparisons. Therapeutic dance is a form of physical activity believed to facilitate movement and therapy uptake. As well as being enjoyable, dancing is thought to improve mobility, balance, and well-being in some people living with PD. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of

The aim of this scoping literature review (SCR) was to analyze the impact of dance on adults with intellectual disabilities, specifically examining its influence on their mobility, interpersonal relationships, well-being, and overall quality of life. A total of 15 papers were reviewed in order to explore the effects of dance on the well-being and quality of life of adults with intellectual disabilities. The findings indicated significant improvements in body awareness, increased engagement in physical activity, and enhanced mental health. This SCR demonstrates that dance is an effective means

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent studies have looked at the effects of dance on functional outcomes for persons with balance, gait, and cognitive impairments. The purpose of this report is to quantify the effects of Salsa dance therapy on function, balance, and fall risk in a sedentary older patient with multiple comorbidities. CASE DESCRIPTION/INTERVENTION: The patient was an 84-year-old woman with functional decline due to Alzheimer's dementia, late effects of a cerebral hemorrhagic aneurysm with right hemiparesis in the lower extremity, arthritis, and recurrent falls. Intervention consisted l

INTRODUCTION: Impaired balance is a common symptom that increases fall risk in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). Although previous meta-analyses concluded that dance-based interventions could improve balance in PwPD, they have limitations, such as small samples and low rigor. Another overlooked issue is whether the effects of dance-based interventions depend on dance style and training duration. The primary purpose of this meta-analysis was to further examine the efficacy of dance-based interventions in improving balance in PwPD. The secondary goals were to compare the intervention effic

In studies of major dance companies that employ mostly adult dancers, measuring the effect of comprehensive medical management that includes daily on-site physical therapy has shown a decrease in the incidence of dance injuries, days missed from dance, injury-related costs, and Workers Compensation claims. As no comparable data have been collected with regard to youth and adolescent dancers, we sought to assess the effect of physical therapist involvement in the care of injuries sustained by young dancers on the incidence and amount of time missed from dancing. A cross sectional study was cond

Irish dance is growing in popularity and competitiveness; however, very little research has focused specifically on this genre of dance. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of dance injuries incurred by Irish dancers. A chart review was performed to identify all injuries associated with Irish dance seen in the sports medicine or orthopaedic clinics at the investigators' hospital over an 11-year period. "Injury" was defined as any dance-related pain or disorder that led to evaluation in the clinics. Survey data were also collected from study participants. Ultimately, 255 patients

INTRODUCTION: Older adults with mobility limitations are at greater risk for aging-related declines in physical function. Line dancing is a popular form of exercise that can be modified, and is thus feasible for older adults with mobility limitations.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of 8 weeks of line dancing on balance, muscle strength, lower extremity function, endurance, gait speed, and perceived mobility limitations.
METHODS: An experimental design randomly assigned older adults to either an 8-week line dancing or usual care group. The convenience sample cons

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread muscular tenderness, pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties. Nonpharmacological treatment options, such as physical activity, are important for people with fibromyalgia. There are strong recommendations to support engagement in physical activity for symptom management among adults with fibromyalgia. Dance is a mode of physical activity that may allow individuals with fibromyalgia to improve their physical function, health, and well-being. The purpose of this study was to explore the value of scrotal ultrasound as a means of evaluating Bancroftian filariasis. Color Doppler ultrasound examinations were performed to look for subclinical hydroceles and motile adult filarial worms (dancing worms) in dilated lymphatics. Sixty-one male subjects from a filariasis-endemic area in Egypt were studied including 19 clinically normal microfilaria (MF) carriers (seven with dancing worms and eight with subclinical hydroceles), 13 MF-negative subjects with positive filarial antigen test results (three with dancing worms and seven with subclinic

CONTEXT: Dancing has been used as a form of exercise to improve functional and metabolic outcomes during aging. The field lacks randomized, clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating metabolic outcomes related to dance interventions, but dancing may be a form of exercise that could induce positive effects on the metabolic health of older adults. However, primary studies seem very heterogonous regarding the trial designs, characteristics of the interventions, the methods for outcomes assessments, statistical powers, and methodological quality.
OBJECTIVE: The current research team intended to review the
