Misstatements, misperceptions, and mistakes in controlling for covariates in observational research.

We discuss 12 misperceptions, misstatements, or mistakes concerning the use of covariates in observational or nonrandomized research. Additionally, we offer advice to help investigators, editors, reviewers, and readers make more informed decisions about conducting and interpreting research where the influence of covariates may be at issue. We primarily address misperceptions in the context of statistical management of the covariates through various forms of modeling, although we also emphasize design and model or variable selection. Other approaches to addressing the effects of covariates, inc

One step at a time: A statistical approach for distinguishing mediators, confounders, and colliders using direction dependence analysis.

In observational data, understanding the causal link when estimating the causal effect of an independent variable (x) on a dependent variable (y) often requires researchers to identify the role of a third variable in the x → y relationship. Mediation, confounding, and colliding are three key third-variable effects that yield different theoretical and methodological implications for drawing causal conclusions. Commonly used covariance-based statistical methods, such as linear regression and structural equation modeling, cannot distinguish these effects in practice, however. In this study, we in

A passive and inclusive strategy to impute missing values of a composite categorical variable with an application to determine HIV transmission categories.

PURPOSE: Multiple imputation (MI) is a widely acceptable approach to missing data problems in epidemiological studies. Composite variables are often used to summarize information from multiple, correlated items. This study aims to assess and compare different MI methods for handling missing categorical composite variables. METHODS: We investigate the problem in the context of a real application: estimating the prevalence of HIV transmission category, which is a composite variable generated by applying a hierarchical algorithm to a group of binary risk source variables from a national program

A data integration framework to improve the efficiency of survival analysis by leveraging multiple external studies with multifaceted heterogeneity.

In survival analysis, integrating multiple data sources holds significant potential to increase event counts, improve statistical efficiency, and enhance scientific discovery. However, challenges arise when external datasets differ in data forms, distributions, and covariate availability. We propose a novel learning framework that strengthens statistical inference of internal Cox regression coefficients through efficient data integration. Our framework is robust integration and accommodates multifaceted data heterogeneity through transformation, working models, penalized approach, and weightin

Heteroskedasticity-robust inference in Bayesian linear regression via the generalized method of moments.

This study proposes a semiparametric approach to Bayesian linear regression using the Bayesian generalized method of moments. Unlike conventional methods, the proposed approach does not require specifying a probability distribution for the error term and avoids relying on the assumptions of homoskedasticity and normality. The primary advantage of this method is its ability to provide valid inference, particularly credible intervals with correct coverage, even in the presence of heteroskedasticity. Simulation studies show that both frequentist and Bayesian methods assuming homoskedasticity yiel

Risk functions with outcome measurement error.

Mortality risk estimated from studies that ascertain date of death through linkage to vital statistics registries may be subject to outcome measurement error. As a result, some deaths among study participants may not be captured, some study participants who are alive may be falsely categorized as deceased, and some deaths may be recorded at incorrect times, leading to bias in estimates of mortality risk and survival. Here, we illustrate an extension of the Rogan-Gladen estimator to account for outcome measurement error in risk and survival functions in settings with right censoring. As a motiv

Associations in Medical Research Can Be Misleading: A Clinician's Guide to Causal Inference.

Understanding the difference between correlation and causation is essential in medical research, yet this distinction remains a common source of confusion among clinicians and researchers. While correlation indicates that two variables are related, it does not necessarily mean that changes in one variable directly cause changes in the other-a misunderstanding that can lead to misguided clinical decisions and flawed public health policies. Causal inference provides a powerful statistical framework for estimating true causal relationships, even in the absence of randomized controlled trials, whi

Bayesian causal inference for observational studies with missingness in covariates and outcomes.

Missing data are a pervasive issue in observational studies using electronic health records or patient registries. It presents unique challenges for statistical inference, especially causal inference. Inappropriately handling missing data in causal inference could potentially bias causal estimation. Besides missing data problems, observational health data structures typically have mixed-type variables - continuous and categorical covariates - whose joint distribution is often too complex to be modeled by simple parametric models. The existence of missing values in covariates and outcomes makes

Nonparametric assessment of regimen response curve estimators.

In the framework of dynamic marginal structural models, regimen-response curve is a function that describes the relation between the mean outcome and the parameters in the class of decision rules. The modeling choice of the regimen-response curve is crucial in constructing an optimal regime, as a misspecified model can lead to a biased estimate with questionable causal interpretability. However, the existing literature lacks methods to evaluate and compare different working models. To address this problem, we will leverage risk to assess the "goodness-of-fit" of an imposed working model. We co

Relative prevalence of different fetishes.

The aim of this study was to estimate the relative frequency of Fetishes in a large sample of individuals. Using the Internet as a data source, we examined 381 discussion groups. We estimate, very conservatively, that at least 5000 individuals were targeted. The relative frequency of each preference category was estimated considering (a) the number of groups devoted to the category, (b) the number of individuals participating in the groups and (c) the number of messages exchanged. The three measures agree both parametrically (Cronbach's alpha=0.91) and non-parametrically (Kendall's W=0.94, P<0

Sandwich Variance Estimation in Scale Mixture of Skew-Normal Linear Mixed Models.

Linear mixed models are often used to analyze studies with repeated measurements over time, where the data present a correlation between observations of the same individual. However, one of the main challenges in using these models is correctly defining the covariance structure associated with error and random effects. To overcome this challenge, we obtain the sandwich variance estimator as a robust alternative to estimate the standard error in the scale mixture of skew-normal linear mixed models (SMSN-LMMs). By definition, SMSN-LMMs can accommodate skewness and heavy tails, and by considering

A scoping review of statistical methods for the analysis of method comparison studies with repeated measurements of clinical data.

BACKGROUND: Method comparison studies are conducted to examine the level of agreement between two instruments measuring physiological continuous parameters. The inclusion of repeated measurements in such studies poses additional challenges. The Bland & Altman limits of agreement (LOA) approach has been adapted to account for the correlation between repeated measurements and is widely used in method comparison studies. Alternate statistical methods are not always appropriate for the analysis of such data, and there is a paucity of evidence and guidelines pertaining to statistical methods that i

From "No Difference" to "Trending": misinterpretation of statistical analysis in animal studies.

The frequentist approach, with its emphasis on statistical significance, remains predominant in animal research. However, the interpretation and reporting practices associated with this approach have not been evaluated in the context of in vivo pharmacology. In this study, 100 recent publications from 5 journals were analyzed. Of these, 61 studies (95% CI 51-71) either misinterpreted the results of hypothesis testing or used terminology that implied a gradation of p-values, rather than adhering to a binary distinction between significant and non-significant outcomes. Additionally, only 1 study

Assessing progress towards achieving the transport dimension of the SDGs in China.

Transport is an important service industry in the national economy. Sustainable transport is central to sustainable development. Currently, investigating the sustainable development process and trade-offs in China's transport sector is urgent. In this study, 11 transport indicators were selected and constructed for the sustainable development goals (SDGs) under the UN indicator framework. The scores of each indicator were calculated, and spatiotemporal patterns and interactions were analyzed. The results revealed that China's transport infrastructure performed well in large transportation volu

Early detection of high disease activity in juvenile idiopathic arthritis by sequential monitoring of patients' health-related quality of life scores.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a chronic disease. During its "high disease activity (HDA)" stage, JIA can cause severe pain, and thus could seriously affect patients' physical and psychological health. Early detection of the HDA stage of JIA can reduce the damage of the disease by treating it at an early stage and alleviating the painful experience of the patients. So far, no effective cure of JIA has been found, and one major goal of disease management is to improve patients' quality of life. To this end, patients' health-related quality of life (HRQOL) scores are routinely collected

Overreaction in Football Wagers.

Football scores are an imperfect measure of a team's ability, and consequently exaggerate differences in abilities. Those teams that perform the best and the worst are not really so far from average in their ability; thus their future performances regress to the mean. Betting data indicate that gamblers do not fully account for this regression.

Trajectory data analyses for pedestrian space-time activity study.

It is well recognized that human movement in the spatial and temporal dimensions has direct influence on disease transmission(1-3). An infectious disease typically spreads via contact between infected and susceptible individuals in their overlapped activity spaces. Therefore, daily mobility-activity information can be used as an indicator to measure exposures to risk factors of infection. However, a major difficulty and thus the reason for paucity of studies of infectious disease transmission at the micro scale arise from the lack of detailed individual mobility data. Previously in transportat

Development of an equation to correct for hemolysis in direct bilirubin measurements.

BACKGROUND: Direct bilirubin is measured for the investigation of pediatric and adult jaundice. Package inserts suggest that hemolysis decreases direct bilirubin measurements, but no published studies have adequately described the extent of interference. METHODS: The influence of hemolysis on direct bilirubin quantification (Beckman AU680) was evaluated by titrating increasing amounts of hemoglobin into specimens with variable starting concentrations of direct bilirubin. An equation was derived to predict the nominal interference-free concentration of direct bilirubin as a function of measure

An alternative approach to study the changes in the cancer pattern of women in India (1988-2005).

BACKGROUND: The changes in the cancer pattern are often studied with the help of changes in the rank of leading sites, changes in the Age Adjusted Rates of the sites over the time or with the help of time trends. However, these methods do not quantify the changes in relation to overall changes that occurred in the total cancer cases over the period of time. An alternative approach was therefore used to assess the changes in cancer pattern in relation to overall changes in time and also an attempt was made to identify the most emerging new cancers in India. METHODS: The cancer incidence data o

Segregation analysis of phenotypic components of learning disabilities. II. Phonological decoding.

Dyslexia is a common, complex disorder, which is thought to have a genetic component. The study of the genetics of dyslexia is complicated by a lack of consensus on diagnostic criteria, and the probability of genetic heterogeneity-it is possible that deficits in different language processes are caused by different underlying genes. In order to address these difficulties, we study continuous phenotypes that are part of the psychometric test batteries often used to diagnose dyslexia. Prior to embarking on a linkage study, it is helpful to employ segregation analysis, both to identify phenotypes
