Larval development in crabs is characterized by a striking double metamorphosis in the course of which the animals change from a pelagic to a benthic life style. The larval central nervous system has to provide an adequate behavioural repertoire during this transition. Thus, processes of neuronal reorganization and refinement of the early larval nervous system could be expected to occur in the metamorphosing animal. In order to follow identified sets of neurons throughout metamorphosis, whole mount preparations of the brain and ventral nerve cord of laboratory reared spider crab larvae (Hyas a

Two new genera from the Chimalapas region in eastern Oaxaca, and from Zongolica, Veracruz, Mexico are presented. Mokayathelphusa angelsotoi n. gen., n. sp., which is described from Oaxaca, is placed in the subfamily Pseudothelphusinae due to the presence of a caudomarginal projection that ends apically in an ornamented plate. Alvarezius n. gen. is erected to accommodate A. zongolicae (Alvarez, Villalobos & Moreno, 2012) n. comb. This species was described in Pseudothelphusa, but a recent molecular phylogenetic analysis based on partial sequences of three genes (COI, 16S and H3) places this spe

A new species of Palaemonella, P. rubrolineata sp. nov., is described on the basis of material collected from pocilloporid corals in Indonesia and Vanuatu. The new species is most closely related to P. orientalis, another tropical Indo-West Pacific species usually found in association with pocilloporid and acroporid corals. The new species can be distinguished from P. orientalis based on the presence of a hepatic spine, the more slender rostrum, body and longer appendages, the pleura of the fifth abdominal segment having a posteroventral tooth, the absence of distal rows of long serrate setae

The taxonomy of the Sundathelphusa philippina (von Martens, 1868) species group (Brachyura; Gecarcinucidae) from the Philippines is revised, and two new species are described. Sundathelphusa philippina sensu stricto is here restricted to the Bicol Peninsula of southern Luzon, and to the islands of Samar and Leyte. It is one of the largest freshwater crabs in the archipelago, reaching carapace widths of more than 53 mm. Sundathelphusa cebu sp. nov. from Cebu Island is superficially similar to S. philippina in morphology but can be separated by a suite of carapace characters. Sundathelphusa quir

Aspects of osmoregulation including salinity tolerance, osmoregulatory capacity, location of transporting epithelia, and the expression of the enzyme Na+/K+-ATPase were investigated in the developing brown shrimp, Crangon crangon (L.), from the North Sea. Early developmental stages and large juveniles were exposed to a wide range of salinities for measurement of hemolymph osmolality and survival rates. In media ranging from 17.0 per thousand to 32.2 per thousand, salinity tolerance was generally high (survival rates: 70%-100%) in all developmental stages, but it decreased in media <10.2 per th

The cryptochirid genus Fungicola Serne, 1968 contains three valid species that inhabit mushroom corals of the family Fungiidae Dana, 1846. Phylogenetic reconstructions of the Cryptochiridae revealed the polyphyletic nature of this genus, which is here resolved with the description of a new genus: Mykescola gen. nov. The gall crab species Fungicola fagei (Fize & Serne, 1956) and F. syzygia van der Meij, 2015 are transferred to the new genus, rendering Fungicola monotypic with F. utinomi (Fize & Serne, 1956) as the sole representative. A diagnosis for the new genus, an overview of the morphologi

Even though it is one of the most studied marine regions in the world, the biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea is still incompletely characterised. In this study, we explore the taxonomy and evolutionary history of the porcelain crab genus Pisidia in the Atlanto-Mediterranean Province, where it has undergone a complex taxonomic history resulting in identification confusion and synonymisation. Through an integrated study using a multilocus phylogeny based on two mitochondrial genes and three nuclear genes, haplotype networks, alongside a morphological analysis and 3-D renderings of micro-CT X

Two new species of the palaemonid genus Periclimenaeus are described and illustrated from Korea; additionally, a third species is recorded from Korea for the first time. Periclimenaeus karantina sp. nov. was obtained from ascidian hosts. The species has a denticulate dactylus on both second pereiopods, considered to be typical for ascidian associates. It can be separated from related species by the combination of the following characters: the carpocerite overreaching the anterior margin of the scaphocerite; the distolateral tooth of the scaphocerite exceeding the anterior margin of the lamella

The phylogeny of European crayfish fauna, especially with respect to Eastern European species, is still far from being completely resolved. To fill this gap, we analyzed most of the European crayfish species focusing on the phylogenetic position of the endemic crayfish Astacus colchicus, inhabiting Georgia. Three mitochondrial and one nuclear marker were used to study evolutionary relationships among European crayfish species, resulting in the unique phylogenetic position of A. colchicus indicating independent species status to A. astacus. Phylogenetic analyses revealed a deep molecular diverg

Data on sessilinasis from Procambarus clarkia are limited. This study investigates sessilid diversity in Hubei Province, China in 2016. Procambarus clarkia pereopods were covered by two sessilid morphotypes in April and May, and the gills were adhered by one of these two morphotypes (morphotype I) in January. Identifying the two morphotypes according to their morphological characters through live observations and protargol-stained method is difficult. Both morphotypes show almost identical morphological characteristics: zooids present vase-shaped, the length-to-width ratio is 2:1, the semicirc

In this study a new organization of the female reproductive organs of Eubrachyura is presented after using both histology and MRI and μCT analyses to investigate the morphology and function of the female reproductive organs of Dorippe sinica Chen, 1980. The reproductive organ is composed of two parts: an ectodermal sperm site and a mesodermal ovary. The ectodermal sperm storage site incorporates a concave vagina and a seminal receptacle, which is completely lined by cuticle and is not connected to the ovary. Additionally, a cavernous body is attached to the seminal receptacle. This cavernous b

Pathogenic variants in the human F-box and leucine-rich repeat protein 4 (FBXL4) gene result in an autosomal recessive, multisystemic, mitochondrial disorder involving variable mitochondrial depletion and respiratory chain complex deficiencies with lactic acidemia. As no FDA-approved effective therapies for this disease exist, we sought to characterize translational C. elegans and zebrafish animal models, as well as human fibroblasts, to study FBXL4-/- disease mechanisms and identify preclinical therapeutic leads. Developmental delay, impaired fecundity and neurologic and/or muscular activity,

A new species of the caridean shrimp genus Periclimenaeus is described from the Cabo Verde Islands, tropical eastern Atlantic. Periclimenaeus ramili sp. nov. is morphologically most similar to the north-eastern Atlantic P. aurae dos Santos, Calado & Araújo, 2008, the western Atlantic P. pearsei (Schmitt, 1932), and particularly the eastern Pacific P. hancocki Holthuis, 1951, all sharing many features, especially the reduced incisor process of the mandible, the general shape of the second pair of chelipeds and ambulatory pereiopods, and the telson armament. Based on these features, a new specie

A new species of processid shrimp, Ambidexter cochensis sp. nov. is described from Venezuela, on the basis of several specimens collected in seagrass beds at a depth less than 1 m. This new species is closely related to A. swifti Abele, 1972 from eastern Pacific, which mainly differs by the number of carpal articles of the second pereiopod, the setation pattern on the telson and the structure of the appendix masculina of the male second pleopod. A key to genus is presented.

The taxonomy of the Indo-West Pacific rhizopine genus Typhlocarcinops Rathbun, 1909 (Pilumnidae) is revised and 22 species are recognised. The identification of these small, soft sediment-dwelling crabs has been difficult because many of the types have never been figured and described to modern standards. The identity of the type species, T. canaliculatus Rathbun, 1909, is clarified and T. gallardoi Serène, 1964, is shown to be its junior synonym. Similarly, T. genkaiae Takeda Miyake, 1972, and T. takedai Ng, 1987, are synonymised with T. decrescens Rathbun, 1914, and T. marginatus Rathbun, 19

Yuelu mountain national park (5A scenic area) is a rare urban mountain scenic area. The major impacts from human activity are growing, such as largely unplanned tourist activity, urbanization, and accelerated the others responsible for environmental changes. It is unavoidable to have great pressure and influence on the diversity of fauna on the scenic area. In order to better understand the diversity of the decapod fauna in the Yuelu mountain national park, an intensive field survey has been carried out. A total of five species was collected, three species of atyid shrimps, Neocaridina palmata

Palaemoncarteri (Gordon, 1935) and Palaemonivonicus (Holthuis, 1950) are morphologically similar species of South American freshwater shrimps. Past studies have questioned the taxonomic status of both species, which are supposed to have partially sympatric geographic distributions in the Amazon basin. We analyzed a 550 bp fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene from these Amazonian Palaemon species as well as from 11 palaemonids as the outgroup. Additionally, we checked diagnostic characters of the genus and family as well as other morphological characters that have been little explored be
